INTRODUCTION

From ancient times to the present, people around the globe have used astrology to understand and
relate with the powerful forces that shape their lives from both within and without. In Western
astrology, our astrological birthchart can be viewed as the personal roadmap each of us is born with,
which reflects the archetypal energies that form and then guide us on our journeys through life.

Because the elemental paradigm of astrology is based on many of the same energetic principles that
are at the core of Dr. Stones Polarity Therapy, the insights gained through the study of astrology can
potentially deepen our understanding of these principles and deepen our work as practitioners. This
has certainly been my experience.

After studying astrology myself for over 40 years, I still consider myself a student of astrology more
than a professional astrologer. However, on my journey as a teacher, I have developed a fair amount of
written material that Ive used to introduce Polarity students to the basic principles of astrology. The
pages that follow are the result of this work to date.

Although it is certainly not a substitute for an in-depth class or a professional reading, this guide should
give you much of what you need to embark on your astrological journey and creatively explore the
many ways you can use an astrological birth chart* as a helpful tool for working with yourself or with
others in the context of Polarity Therapy.

May this work be of service to you and the people you work with.

Peace & Blessings,

Lisa Marie Schimski

WHAT IS ASTROLOGY?

It is the nature of the human mind to recognize patterns and seek out regularities and correlations be-
tween all the many things that make up our world based on our observations. This ability allows us
to predict outcomes for future plans based on past experiences. And, by extrapolating relatively consis-
tent principles from well-observed patterns, we can also meet complex or unforeseen events and un-
precedented challenges with a greater level of confidence. The skillful utilization of this gift is proba-
bly at the foundation of what we consider to be some our greatest collective human achievements in
many fields of endeavorfrom art and architecture to mathematics and science to sacred rituals and all
forms of healing arts, just to name a few.

A HERITAGE BASED ON OBSERVATION
The study of astrology is based on correlations made between patterns observed among the stars and
planets and those found in the life events, relationships, and inner experiences of human beings and
communities.

From the most ancient times to the present, people around the globe have looked up and seen the in-
tricate patterns of stars and planets in the night sky. Our ancestors observed many things about these
patterns and information about these observations has been passed down from generation to genera-
tion over countless millennia.

And, without primetime TV, net surfing, and other distractions of modern life, our ancestors were
probably also keen observers of the human dramas around them. (Perhaps, instead of pondering the
story line of last nights episode of Law & Order: Traffic Violations Bureau and wondering whether
youll like the new CSI: Outer Mongolia as much as the original or arguing with your spouse over
whether CNN or FoxNews offers a more fair and balanced treatment of world events, they actually had
the time and mental space to notice correlations between star patterns and people patterns!)

So, what are some of the things our ancestors might have observed?

The most obvious were, of course, the daily rising and setting of the Sun and the monthly Moon cycle. Various
stages in the Suns daily cycle could be correlated with various activities and levels of focus and awak-
eness, while the Moons phases could be correlated with shifts in mood and psychological states, as
well as the menstrual cycles of women. (Even in modern times, many hospital emergency rooms, as
well as the police department, routinely schedule extra staff during the full moon, because theyve ob-
served a statistically significant increase in crimes, injuries, and mental illness during this time!)

There was also the regularity of fixed spatial relationships of the stars with each otherrather than moving
randomly, they created dependable images that could be counted on to withstand change over time. Our ances-
tors connected the dots and saw various animals and objects and people in various poses, which
slowly floated in an orderly fashion across the sky from sunset to sunrise. Some of these fixed constel-
lations became the signs of the zodiacand there are many, many more.

2007 Lisa Marie Schimski-EnergyArts 5

At a higher order of complexity, our ancestors observed the cyclical drift of these star patterns through time
over the course of each year. For example, although the stars that make up what we now call Ursa Major
the big bear (aka the big dipper)always have the same relationship with each other, exactly
where they will end up in the sky at a particular time of night changes throughout the year. In this
case, the regularity is from year to year the star pattern in the night sky on the night of the winter sol-
stice will always look the same as on the last winter solstice.

This level of complexity within a yearly cycle is similar to the change of seasons we experience in temperate
latitudes, which can also be correlated with changes in the relative lengths of days and nights, as well as where
the Sun and Moon rise and set on the horizon. (There are several ancient structures, such as Stonehenge,
which are constructed so that the Sun will rise at a specific place on the day of the Winter Solstice.) As
with the daily Sun and monthly Moon cycles, this yearly pattern can be correlated with various envi-
ronmental and social conditions, needs/ concerns, activities, skills, community rituals, and psychologi-
cal states as well as the behavior of animals, insects, birds, plants, etc.

Then there were the visible planetsMercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturnlarger than the stars and
dancing through their landscape of fixed constellations, sometimes forward, sometimes back, sometimes
dropping out of sight and then appearing months later. Their movement may have, at first, seemed arbi-
trary. Though, upon closer, long-term scrutiny, their periodic patternswhich span anywhere from less
than a year for Mercury to about 28 years for Saturnemerged.

Now that we have created artificial environments for ourselves where temperature, light levels, the
availability of food, and the ability to travel, etc. is dictated more by our personal whims and choices
than by Mother Nature, it may be hard for us to even notice what our ancestors were profoundly
aware of most of the time: that during different times of the day, the month, and the yearnot to men-
tion the span of a human lifedifferent types of needs, focuses, activities, concerns, and qualities of
consciousness emerge and recede in a natural rhythm that is in sync with our environment. And, when
we go out of sync with this rhythm, we can get into trouble.

DOES ASTROLOGY WORK?
Some modern-day critics of astrology categorically dismiss its validity based on a simple cause-and-
effect argument. They hear someone espousing an astrological paradigm at a party say something
about the influence of Mercury retrograde or a Sun-Saturn conjunction in the natal chart and
they think that what is meant by this is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the planet and
the people. Very woo-woo, they might say, when the scientists arent looking, some lifeless mass of
rock hurtling around the Sun sends energy beams toward the people of planet earth to mess with their
free will Yeah, right! (Viewed this way, it sounds pretty silly to me, too.)
Many things observed cannot be explained.

I have been a student of astrology for over 40 years. What began to intrigue me more and more about
it was that it seemed to accurately describe my experience about myself and other people. This hap-
pened more and more as I moved beyond the more trivial insights of the Cosmopolitan Bedside As-
trologer and daily horoscopes. I went for several astrological readings during my teens and twenties
with highly experienced astrologers. In most cases, they were people I had never met before and who
did not know anything else about me except my birth date, time, place, and my name. Nonetheless,
they were able to tell me accurate details about my personality and how I related with others, as well
as very deep things about my inner lifethings that were not obvious externally and I shared with very
few people. They were also able to pinpoint critical moments in my past and the general nature of
these moments (e.g. when my father died when I was 16 and a traumatic event at the age of 5 that trig-
gered a long-term pattern of fear related to public speaking as well as the time when I was able to re-
solve it). I remember that there was a time period in college when I steeped myself in astrological in-
formation and was able to identify the Sun Sign of every new person I met, within a very short period
of time, with something approaching an 80-90% accuracy. These experiences allowed me to suspend
my disbelief enoughdespite sometimes persuasive arguments from scientifically-minded friends
and colleagues and occasional warnings from my own internal woo-woo meterto continue utiliz-
ing the wisdom and insight astrological thinking can potentially lead us to.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Having experienced that astrology works, I started to wonder how it works. Although I cannot say that
I have any sort of definitive answer as of yet, my study of Polarity Therapy has helped immensely in
developing a context in which to explore the time-honored observations and correlations of astrology
in a creative and useful way.

Dr. Stone was fond of quoting the Hermetic axiom: As Above, So Below. He tells over and over
again that the macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm and vice versathat what is happening on
one level of experience is reflected on other levels. So, rather than seeking out a simple cause-and-
effect relationship between the rest of the planets of our solar system and the people inhabiting ours, I
have begun to view astrological configurations as reflections of larger energetic patterns that underlie
everything. It goes something like this:

There is a continual cyclic interplay of energies in the universe that we and our planet Earth and all the
stars and planets of our solar system are part of. From the viewpoint of our planet, we can say that
throughout the year certain energies come to ascendancy while others recede (something weve lost
touch with to a large extent in modern times, but our ancestors were acutely aware of, as discussed
previously). These energies are archetypalfundamental to all people and found throughout nature. At
certain moments some are more activated than others. The dynamic pattern of these underlying ener-
gies is reflected in planetary movements as well as in our bodies and outer environment. Its not that
Mercury retrograde causes an unexpected communication problem, its more like the underlying
energy that is reflected in Mercury retrograde is also reflected in our personal experience.

So what about the birth chart? Well, no matter how easy it may seem to others involved, birth is an
incredibly traumatic experience: We go from floating in a warm, safe environmentthe only thing
weve ever known in this particular lifetimeand all of a sudden were being compressed and
squeezed out through an incredibly narrow opening into a world of lights and giant creatures who
have total control over our physical well-being... sort of like a scene out of an alien abduction movie.
There are theories that are being developed through trauma research that suggest that, possibly due to
the brain chemistry involved in the high stress of trauma, whatever is happening in that moment is
strongly imprinted on our psyche, as well as our bodies, usually in a way that operates below the level
of conscious awareness and tends to stay with us for a very long time. The birth chart is sort of a dia-
2007 Lisa Marie Schimski-EnergyArts 7

grammatic snap shot of the stars and planets at the moment of our birth as viewed from the place we
are born. Going back to As Above, So Below we could say that the energetic pattern inherent in the
universe at the moment of our birth, which is reflected at a macrocosmic level in this patterns of stars
and planets, is going to be strongly imprinted on us.

Just as with any other sort of trauma, our field of possibilitiesin terms of feelings, behaviors, and ex-
periences, and activities we are willing to engage incan be narrowed by it. And, the potential to
unwind the trauma and create a higher order of freedom and awareness is also there. (How we might
use astrology to do this is presented under Involutionary & Evolutionary Perspectives on Astrology
on page 8.)

POLARITY THERAPY & WESTERN ASTROLOGY
Polarity Therapy was developed by Dr. Randolph Stone, DO, DC, ND over the course of his life
(1890-1981). In this work, Dr. Stone brought together ancient wisdom traditions of both East and West
with an understanding of modern physics and numerous natural healing modalities in an attempt to
identify the underlying essence of all healing arts and utilize it in his practice. Both as a Mason and
as the librarian for the theosophical society for many years he was exposed to numerous teachings on
hermetic philosophy and Western esoteric traditions and incorporated a great deal of what he learned
into the principles of Polarity Therapy, along with skills and insights drawn from Indian Ayurveda, Ori-
ental Medicine, and his western naturopathic, osteopathic, and chiropractic training.

Western astrology has roots in the same Western esoteric traditions and its paradigm based on the 4
active elements of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth is not only similar to Polaritys elemental model, we
find it in Indian Ayurveda and the Chakra System. Moreover, astrologys 3 modalities of Cardinal, Mu-
table, and Fixed is similar to Sattvic, Rajasic, and Tamasic qualities of energy used in Polarity and Ay-
urveda.

Each of the astrological signs is associated with a specific area of the body in an organized fashion
from the head to the feet. As you can see from Dr. Stones chart shown on page 11, the first sign, Ar-
ies, which begins on the first day of Spring, is associated with the head and eyes; the second sign, Tau-
rus, with the neck; the third sign, Gemini, with the shoulders and arms; the fourth sign, Cancer, with
the breast; the fifth sign, Leo, with the solar plexus and diaphragm; the sixth sign. Virgo, with the intes-
tines; the seventh sign, Libra, with the kidneys; the eighth sign, Scorpio, with the pelvis and genitals;
the ninth sign, Sagittarius, with the thighs; the tenth sign, Capricorn, with the knees; the eleventh sign,
Aquarius, with the ankles; and the twelfth sign, Pisces, with the feet.

Dr. Stone utilized these astrological relationships as a key part of Polaritys system of energy balancing
because he found strong correspondences between them and how energy flowed (and didnt flow) in
the body. For example, when a person is suffering from an imbalance in the Fire element (which re-
lates to the ability to focus, enthusiasm, anger, and digestion, among other things), the head, solar
plexus, and thighs may experience a statically held increase and/or decrease of energy (e.g. the head
may have a relative lack of energy, which results in mental fogginess or lethargy, while there may be a
relative excess of energy in the either the solar plexus, which can affect digestion, or the thighs). Hold-
ing various types contacts between these regions, allows the Fire energy to flow more easily
physically, as well as emotionally and mentally.

For many Polarity practitioners, an in-depth study of Western astrology greatly enhances an under-
standing and awareness of more subtle nuances of the Elements and how they manifest in our lives,
even if they do not fully embrace the predictive part of the work.

HOW TO LOOK AT
AN ASTROLOGICAL CHART

PART 1: ASTROLOGY & THE ELEMENTS

Western Astrology can be quite complex. There are numerous ways to interpret even the simplest
features of the chartand there are many additional details about planetary relationships that I still find
mind-boggling after 40 years!

I recommend that, if you are new to the study of astrology, you begin with the simplest level and add
layers of complexity. For those who are also studying Polarity Therapy, the natural first step is to look
at the chart through the lens of the 4 Elements.

In doing so, it is important to remember that everyone has all four Elements and is capable of manifest-
ing them. The elemental balance of the birth chart can tell us how easy or how difficult this process
may be. It will also tell us where someones energy is focused, what is most important to them, and
what their primary needs, resources, and challenges might be.

For Polarity practitioners, this information is invaluable. It can tell us how we might best relate to and
communicate with our clients, how they will approach various dimensions of their lives (as signified
by the planets and houses), and where they might benefit from elemental modeling to meet specific
challenges. Understanding our own elemental balance can also help us navigate through problematic
relationships with clients in our practices and our lives in general.

To evaluate the elemental balance of someones birth chart, it is important to look at the chart as a
whole. However, there are certain key factors that will show us how a persons energy is most con-
sciously directed and which elements are most easily accessed in everyday life. Thus, it is recom-
mended that you first look at the elements associated with the signs of the following factors:

Sun, Moon & Ascendant
Planetary Rulers of the Sun & Ascendant

Next, look at the personal planets (in the order listed): Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter & Saturn.

The elements of the signs associated with the trans-personal planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto)as
well as the moons nodes, asteroids, and other factorsare considered to be of less importance in de-
termining someones primary elemental expression because they usually operate below the level of
conscious awareness and have more to do with how we relate with the larger generational, cultural,
and cosmic forces that shape our lives than with the more intimate realm of our personalities. Strong
aspects or emphasis of these planets in the chart, however, increase their importance and make them
more consciously active.

The Key on the inside cover includes charts to help you identify signs, elements, planets, and plane-
tary rulerships and the following pages include descriptions of the primary characteristics of how each
of the four elements used in astrology manifests through the personality.

2007 Lisa Marie Schimski-EnergyArts 17

I will use my own astrological information as an example:

primary factors:
Sun () in Scorpio () = Water
Moon () in Gemini () = Air
Ascendant () in Scorpio() = Water
Sun in Scorpio = Water

secondary factors:
Mars () in Pisces () = Water
Pluto () in Virgo () = Earth

other personal planets:
Mars () in Pisces () = Water
Venus () in Libra () = Air
Mercury () in Sagittarius () = Fire
Jupiter () in Virgo () = Earth
Saturn () in Sagittarius () = Fire

The information above would indicate that Water is my dominant Element, with Air coming in 2nd,
and Fire and Earth much less prominent.

This is largely true, though it doesnt take into account a special feature of my chart: The fact that my
Sun (and north node ) is sitting right next to (aka conjuncting ) my Mercury and Saturn in Sagitta-
rius. This strongly increases the Fire level of my chart.

This is even further increased by a very strong aspect to this energetic focal point of Fire and Water.
Aspects are a special geometric relationship between planets in the chart that indicate how the ener-
gies of the planets involved relate with each other. In this case, the aspect is a perfect triangle, called a
Grand Trinea strong, harmonious relationshipbetween the Sun/North Node/Mercury/Saturn AND
Uranus () in Leo () AND Ceres () in Aries (). This creates a lot more Fire than would be ex-
pected otherwise.

ASTEROIDS & PLANETOIDS
Ceres, Pallas Athena, Vesta & Juno are the largest of a group of asteroids orbiting the sun between Mars
and Jupiter. They were first discovered in the early 1800s (just before the inception of the womens
movement), but were not regarded as significant astrological entities until the 1970s (when the
womens movement came to fruition). Collectively, they offer a much needed elaboration on the
feminine archetypes explored through Western astrology (beyond the Moon/Mother and Venus/Lover).
Because of their physical position, they can be looked at, collectively, as a transformational bridge
between the five personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus & Mars) and the two social planets
(Jupiter & Saturn).

Chiron is a planetoid that orbits the sun between Saturn and Uranus in a 51 year cycle. It was
discovered in 1977. Because of its physical position, Chiron can also be considered a transformational
bridge between the personal/social planets visible with the naked eye and the transpersonal planets
that are not visible.

CHIRON: MYTH: A wise teacher that was accidentally scratched by one of Hercules poisoned
arrows. Because he was immortal and unable to die, he lived his life in excruciating
pain. He became a great healer of others from what he learned in his attempt to heal
himself. He finally negotiated with Zeus to give his immortality to Prometheus (who
stole fire from the gods to give to humans) and was allowed to dwell in the
Underworld where he could release his physical pain.

ARCHETYPAL ENERGY: the wounded healerbeing wounded, wounding others, where/
how we learn through suffering and disappointment, wounds that lead us to greater
knowledge about how to heal ourselves and others, inward vision and shamanic
experiences, walking between the worlds, unique or magical experiences, teachers/
mentors, associated especially with the hands and thighs

CERES: MYTH: (Demeter in Greece) The Great Earth Mother. Goddess of Grain, Fertility, the
Harvest & the Eleusinian Rites. Daughter of Cronos/Saturn & Rhea. Sister of Zeus/
Jupiter, Poseidon/Neptune & Hades/Pluto, as well as of Vesta & Juno. Demeter/Ceres
was the mother of Persephone/Kore, who was taken to the Underworld by Hades/Pluto
(some myths say she went willingly, some say unwillingly). Distraught at the loss of her
daughter, Ceres withheld the energy of fertility and the earth became barren. Eventually
a bargain was struck with Pluto to return Persephone to her mother for half of the year.

ARCHETYPAL ENERGY: the motherhow we nurture others and how we like to be
nurtured, parenting (esp. single parenting), childcare and education, unconditional
love, relationships with parents and children, food issues, self-esteem issues, rituals for
transformation and dying, childbirth, womens blood mysteries, lessons of attachment
and separation,grief/loss/abandonment, issues of sharing, fertility, renewal, living for
and through children, mother-daughter wounds

PALLAS
ATHENA: MYTH: Daughter of Zeus/Jupiter. Virgin Goddess of Wisdom, War & Victory, Politics,
Strategic Planning, Justice, Arts & Crafts, and Healing. She sprang from Zeuss forehead
as a full-grown warrior queen. (Earlier myths say that, prior to this, Zeus had
swallowed Pallas Sea Goddess Mother whole while she was pregnant and Pallas
emerged when Zeus was struck with a headache that could only be relieved by
cleaving his forehead with a double-edged axe.) Also related to Medusa and Snake
Goddesses, as well as Amazons.

ARCHETYPAL ENERGY: the daughter and the warrior queencreative intelligence
using reproductive energy to produce mental progeny, adaptation of the feminine
wisdom principle to the needs of the patriarchal state (hence, relates to professional
women who give up relationship or parenting to excel at their careers), the ability to
strategize, the ability to rise above feelings toward compassionate justice, valor and
strength, political activism, artistic ability, androgyny, denial of femininity, father-
daughter complexes, prophecy & oracle, creative visualization, fear of success

VESTA: MYTH: (Hestia in Greece) Sister of Zeus/Jupiter, Poseidon/Neptune & Hades/Pluto, as
well as of Ceres & Juno. Goddess of the Hearth and Keeper of the Sacred Flame.

ARCHETYPAL ENERGY: the sister and priestess of the temple (the vestal virgin, i.e. she
who belongs to no man... they often performed sacred sexual religious devotions)
focus, commitment, dedication toward path and goal, integration of spiritual and
sexual energies, liberated sexuality, sexual fears, guilt & inadequacies, fear of intimacy
and commitment, transmutation of sexual forces, shows how/where we show focus,
commitment & dedication to our path and how we deal with sexual energy

JUNO: MYTH: (Hera in Greece) Both Wife and Sister of Zeus/Jupiter. Sister of Poseidon/
Neptune & Hades/Pluto, as well as of Ceres & Vesta.

ARCHETYPAL ENERGY: the wife and the divine consortprinciple of relatedness,
committed partnership, perfected and balanced union with another, intimacy, trust,
freedom & equality, infidelity, betrayal jealousy, relinquishing power, shows our
capacity for meaningful relationships and how/where we fulfill our intimacy needs

The houses of the chart represent various areas of life. The house in which a particular planet is located
will indicate WHERE the energy of that planet will manifest most strongly, where it will be focused,
where the dramas associated with the planet will be played out in your life.

The chart below shows which signs are the natural rulers of each housethe one that resonates most
strongly with that particular area of life. On your chart, depending on what time you were born, a
different set of signs will be shown for each house, indicating the style in which you, personally, relate
with each area of life.

ASTROLOGY BOOK LIST
There are many interesting books out therehere are some that I have found the most consistently
helpful through the years:

*Making the Gods Work for Youthe astrological language of the psyche. Caroline W. Casey. Three
Rivers Press. New York, NY. 1998. (My current favorite... Incredibly witty and worldly as well as
deep. Focuses on the energy of the planets.)

Secrets from A Stargazers Notebookmaking astrology work for you. Debbi Kempton-Smith. Ban-
tam Books. (Humorously insightful and fun to read.)

Astrologya cosmic science. Isabel M. Hickey. New Pathways. Waltham, MA. 1970. (Sort of old yet
I find myself referring back to it often as a basic text. Not much about Pluto.)

*The Astrologers Handbook. Frances Sakoian & Louis S. Acker. Harper & Row. New York, NY. 1973.
(Good basic textgreat details about such things as the meaning of various signs on house cusps, as-
pects between planets, etc. Good basic reference.)

*Chart Interpretation Handbookguidelines for understanding the essentials of the birth chart.
Stephen Arroyo. CRCS Publications. Sebastopol, CA. 1989. (Simple, good outline on how to interpret a
chart.)

Astrology, Karma & Transformationthe inner dimensions of the birth chart. Stephen Arroyo. CRCS
Publications. Vancouver, WA. 1978. (Extremely insightful and deep. Especially helpful in understand-
ing the personal effects of the outer planetsmost books just deal with them as generational.)

*The Book of Housesan astrological guide to the harvest cycle in human life. Robert Cole & Paul
Williams. Entwhistle Books. Glen Ellen, CA. 1980. (Another all time favorite. Looks at houses through
the metaphor of planting cycles. Suggests a process that can be followed on a yearly basis to cultivate
ones life patha very helpful experience.)

*Saturna new look at an old devil. Liz Greene. Samuel Weiser, Inc. York Beach, ME. 1976. (Highly
recommended for taking a deeper look at Saturn issues.)

Horoscope Symbols. Robert Hand. Para Research. Rockport, MA. 1981. (Good general reference.)

*Asteroid Goddessesthe mythology, psychology and astrology of the re-emerging feminine. De-
metra George with Douglas Bloch. ACS Publications. San Diego, CA. 1986. (The conventional plane-
tary pantheon is definitely slanted toward masculine archetypes. There are four asteroids that are
named after goddesses and these archetypes help round out our understanding of the feminine princi-
ple in the charts of both men and women. Very highly recommended.)

Spiritual Astrologyyour personal path to self-fulfillment. Jan Spiller & Karen McCoy. Simon &
Schuster. New York, NY. 1985. (I am not thrilled with the writing in the first parthowever, it contains
one of the few comprehensive guides for using solar and lunar eclipses in the birth charta very use-
ful addition to understanding ones gifts, challenges, and what you have come her to do in this life-
time.)

*Highly recommended

HOW TO GET A
COPY OF YOUR BIRTH CHART...
To get a free copy of your birth chart, contact Astrodienst at

www.astro.com

Since the archetypes of the planets are mostly masculine, it is recommended that you request the addi-
tion of the following asteroids to the chart: Ceres, Juno, Pallas, and Vesta. This will give you a more
balanced view of your feminine side , as discussed on page 25. The addition of the asteroid Chiron is
also recommended, especially for those involved in the healing arts.
