Ism Project Introduction and Purpose Paper

Introduction
In this paper I will not only introduce myself but my project topic as well. Not only will I
introduce the topic but I will also explain exactly what Im researching and elaborate on the
reasoning and background on my decision to do this project. Throughout this paper, I will do my
best to give a better understanding of what my project is, what type of product I will develop and
what in my inspiration for it was. My project topic is ankle injuries which branches off from my
career of interest, Athletic Training, that I chose to study for the fall semester of this Independent
Study Mentorship.
What is my ISM project topic?
Like I introduced in the previous paragraph my project topic is Ankle Injuries. But
because ankle injuries are such a broad and wide spread study, Ive decided to narrow my
research down to two of the most common injuries. Inversion and Eversion are so common
because these injuries to ankle that can occur in everyday like and sports. Although inversion is
more common than Eversion, Ive decided to research both of them due to the compare and
contrast dynamics that they share. The two injuries involve different bones, ligaments and areas
of the ankle. For example, Inversion sprains involve the lateral side of the ankle, which include
the Anterior Tibiofibular ligament, Calceneofibular ligament, and the Talofibular ligament.

The Eversion sprain on the other hand involves what referred to as the Deltoid Ligaments.
They include the Posterior Tibiotalar ligament, Tibiocalcaneal ligament, and the Tibionavicular
ligament. In my presentation I will elaborate more on the injuries itself. Such as the M.O.I
(mechanism of the injury), Go over the anatomy of the ankle, what exactly happens during the
injury and other information of that nature.
Who am I and why did I choose this topic?
Now that I have introduced what Im researching and gone into depth about my project
topic; now Ill discuss the background and reasoning behind it all. But first let me introduce
myself. I am Chelsi Woodard, a senior at Clear Springs High School, and I play varsity on the
girls basketball team. When I graduate high school I plan to go to a selected college and major
in kinesiology while minoring in nursing. While studying kinesiology I plan to get well
acquainted with the athletic trainers and familiarize myself with the career. Thats the reason I
chose to take this course, so that I can get better understanding of what Athletic Training is all
about. I wanted to see what really happens in the career not just what I saw from an injured
athletes viewpoint or a curious pupil. And every pupil needs a teacher, and I chose Mayra Reed
to be mine. When I had to make a choice of who my mentor was going to be for the course, she
was the first person who came to my mind. Ive always had a sense of admiration for her, shes
actually the reason why in so interested in athletic training. The first time I saw her as an
incoming freshman with a minor ankle sprain, she captivated my attention. The way she handled
the situation and took control and helped me understand what had happened to my ankle first,
then comforted me with a simple explanation of the healing and rehabilitation process was the
most intriguing thing I had ever experienced. In addition to that experience my ankle injury is
part of the reason why I chose my project topic. Due to the sport I play, I see ankle injuries of all
types very often, in my opinion I see it too often. So when I decided to study injuries, ankles took
my top choice. Because Ive personally experienced ankle injuries and I see them on a weekly if
not daily basis, I wanted to get more involved and try to understand why they are so common
and understand the injury itself. So my first encounter with Coach Reed and my curiosity with
my own personal experiences are the concrete of my decisions.
Main Purpose/Goal of Project
The main purpose of my project is, like I expressed earlier, to understand why this
particular injury is so common. Again also to understand the injury itself. To do that I have to
understand the ankle body part itself. Ive injured my ankle in so many different ways; I wanted
to understand what exactly was happening to my ankle. I needed to see and get clarification on
what I did on my part and what my ankle failed to do on its part. For instance when coming
down from a layup wrong, which ligaments failed to support my ankle. Understanding what did
could help to try and prevent the same injury from occurring again. Also Ill know what I need to
do to strengthen the ankle so it wont be prone to weakness and/or injury.
Clear and Concise Presentation of how Ill prepare for and carry out project
As for the preparation of my project; Ive already completed the majority of my research
of my topics inversion and eversion. Now I just have to organize all of the information that I
have gathered in a professional and attractive manner. If its organized in a way that Ive desired,
then the easier it will be to present, keep the flow of presentation at a comfortable pace, and keep
the audience engaged at all times. Below I will list a series of steps I plan to organize and put my
project together.
First- Give my introduction
Introduce everything that my instructor requires in the intro.
Second- Mentor Information
Give information about my mentor such as her background, education, and current work status.
Third- Picture of my mentor
Ill give a picture of my mentor and other pictures of my in action in the athletic room.
Fourth- Introduce project
Ill start out with a thought provoking question or phrase that will catch the audiences attention.
Fifth- Go over anatomy of the ankle
Show pictures and explain the ankle and all its parts to give the audience a better understanding
and visual of what Im about to breakdown.
Sixth- Every ankle injury is different
Explain and elaborate on what this means
Seventh-Body Slides
In my body slides I plan to introduce all the information I have researched on my two injuries,
show live demonstrations, give handouts of examples of rehabilitation options, show my tangible
item, afterwards give more demonstrations of strengthening exercises, and answer any questions
that may be asked.

Eighth- Conclusion
Lastly ill site all the information Ive obtained, Explain what this project meant to me, and Thank
my teacher, mentor, and parents for all the support and guidance.
This is just a blueprint of the organization I plan to have for my project presentation.

Description of Product
During the presentation it is required that we have a product or tangible item, hand-
made or personally developed. Since Im studying Athletic Training and my topic is ankle
injuries, my teacher gave me the option to do a live demonstration of taping an ankle, or a video
recording of my taping an ankle. During the video I will narrate the taping process and explain
what Im doing and why Im doing it.
What I hope to gain by the completion of the project
By the time I have completed the project, I would like to have a strong understanding of
the anatomy of the ankle. Also I would like to have an outstanding amount of knowledge
concerning the inversion and eversion sprains so I can be better prepared for injury evaluation
when I get to college. Lastly I would like to have a concrete foundation in the athletic training
career field so that I can make sure that this what I would like to spend my time studying in
college and do for the rest of my life.
