Selective breeding is the act of artificially forcing the continuation of certain
phenotypes that an animal or plant possesses which is favourable to the
conditions or job that the animal or plant is needed for. It is completely
controlled by man and in no way allows for the natural selection that allows for
the variation needed for a species to survive changes in their environments.

Selective breeding has been happening for centuries with dog breeds, cows and
also many other animal types in order to Increase their ability to complete
desired jobs or family needs. The traits that are favourable are heavily bred via
inbreeding of families of the species in order to continue the trait in following
generations. It is a great way to be able to create a breed with traits that are
needed for a job that us humans cannot complete but with their instincts, athletic
traits and intelligence these jobs can be done. It is also useful in production of
products such as using hens that lay large amounts of eggs for breeding to be
able to mass produce eggs, or in cows allowing those who produce large
amounts of milk for breeding.

Selective breeding of the breed we now know as the German Shepherd
originated in Germany in 1889, when a standardization of the breed was
established by Captain Max Von Stephanitz. He chose the dog for its traits of
Inteligence, primal instincts and its powerful frame and jaw. It suited the job of a
sheep herder which he needed. It needed little training due to its incredible
obedience, but if trained possessed an incredible dog for this job. This family of
dogs where heavily inbred with eachother to produce large numbers. The dogs
where then utilized in the world wars and now by police forces all around the
world. They are a great family dog with their obedience proving allowing them to
be loving and caring towards their owners and the public, but their still powerful
frame and jaw creates the opportunity for a great guard dog as well. The
opportunity for a great dog with traits that are fantastic for many different
situations, and it was taken by Max. And this has allowed for the growing of a
great species of animals for years to come.

Human intervention in the selective breeding in animals over hundreds of
generations has caused a dramatic loss in the natural variety that allows species
to survive in the event of a natural disaster or chance even occurring. Confining
the species of the world into a smaller bracket of animals, only being mass bred
for the need of the human population. Thus reducing the numbers in a
population of a species that isnt needed for the use of humans.

Selective breeding has had a positive impact on the way in which humans as a
socity have been able to move forward. With out selectively breeding dogs to her
sheep or cows to make extra milk then agricultural and industry would not have
reached the heights it has. I think that it has been great for society, but it has had
a negative effect on the overall animal populations of the world, with the culling
of animals that dont fit the needed gene pool we have reduced the variation
within the species which allows them to evolve, so effectively humans have
become god in this case choosing and picking from the gene pool in order to
create and sustain a species that suits us.
