ISP: Independent Study Project

Public Service Announcement

This Independent Study Project will encompass all that you have explored and studied in this course. This
includes programs, terminology and techniques.

Your task is to create a public service announcement.

A public service announcement or PSA is a message created in the interest of the public, usually in
the form of commercials paid for by not-for-profit or government organizations. The purpose of a
PSA is to raise public awareness and behaviour towards various social issues.

You will begin by choosing a social issue, which you feel strongly about. You will create an idea for an
organization and a public service campaign that aims to raise public awareness of the issue.



You will be required to complete the following:

1. Public Service Announcement
o Storyboard
o You will create a storyboard for your PSA which will include the components you wish to
film and edit
o Include how it will coordinate to the music you use
o Original Edited Footage
o All footage must be original, think of how you may visualize the story and be aware of
copyright issues and trademarks
o Credits
o You must conclude your video with credits
o Include and use of copyright material
o Final video
o Should be 30-40 seconds long
o Must be created in Final Cut Professional, iMovie or Adobe
TM
Premiere and must be
exported as an AVI file



2. Promotional Products
o Merchandise
o You must create a piece of merchandise to promote your PSA and raise awareness of
your issue
o Think KONY posters, pink bracelets for Breast Cancer Awareness
o Slogan, Logo and Business Card
o Since you are the founder of this organization, you are to create a business card to
promote your cause
o Must include your name, logo and slogan on a standard sized business card

3. Other Requirements
o Proposal
o You will submit a 400-word proposal describing your cause and organization
o Will include a mission statement for your organization
o Include the issue you will bring awareness to, discuss The Three Cs and include the
design intentions you have for your campaign
o Research
o You will write a 400-word research paper outlining why the public should be aware of
the issue and key items you are going to discuss in your PSA
o You must include a minimum of three references and provide proper citation in a
bibliography
