Stylizing an animal expressive composition with costumes/background
Color schemes how color affects mood, expressiveness
Painting technique
1. Choose a photo of an animal that inspires you (George R. used his own pet and the folk tale of
the Cajun Were Wolf, Rougaroo.
2. Using tracing paper, trace over the main lines, and shapes of the animal.
3. Now look at the tracing of the animal you did.
4. See if you can see the simple shapes and lines that make up this animal.
5. Using the tracing as a visual reference, draw the animal in a larger scale on the 11 x 14 poster
paper. Lightly!!! So that you may edit the drawing to be more accurate.

6. Change the features to be more cartoon like. (simplify)

7. Look up all kinds of cartoons of your type of animal and see which features, emotions best fit
what you are trying to portray
8. Think of the expressive mood you would like to portray, and pick a costume, or background you
would like your animal to be in. like when George described the Sept. 11

9. Now draw a background and costume or attire to your animal to express this mood or feeling.
10. Mrs. Meyer will demo mixing of tempra paint and the painting technique used in this project
11. Choose colors that also show the expressive mood of the painting you created
12. Mix your paint(thoroughly) and paint according to the technique demonstrated by Mrs. Meyer
a. Inline the area with a thin brush
b. Paint in even strokes without any streaking
c. Make sure you have an even coverage of the paint so no paper is showing
d. Paint should be even and look like velvet when dry
13. Clean up all edges of your painting
14. Check your artwork to make sure you have met all the criteria of the project
a. Paint is neat, even and smooth to appear like velvet with all areas covered.
b. Drawing resembles the animal with similar shapes and lines
c. Color, Costume and design are used to express the emotion and feeling of the piece as
explained in the artist statement worksheet and paragraph
d. Features are stylized to reflect the simplicity of the artwork
15. Fill out the Artist Statement worksheet, then write in complete sentences your Artist Statement
on a separate sheet of paper.
