Materials Needed:

- 1 meter of woven(not knit) cotton or cotton/poly blend fabric that has no pattern (one colour) and no
stretch. **Please wash and dry this material in hot water to pre-shrink it prior to starting project. If you
do not have access to laundry facilities, please talk to Ms. Wiest about alternate arrangements.**
- 1 large spool of all-purpose sewing thread in coordinating colour to fabric chosen.
- 1 notebook,(or section of binder/duotang), with plenty of paper to develop design ideas and notes
- Pencils and erasers for sketching
- $2 for bobbin renting you will get this $2 back at the end of the term if you return your bobbin in the
condition you received it
- $7 for course enhancement fee, please see additional letter home
Assessment:
Journal Entries 10%
This could include reflecting on questions presented in class or for homework. Questions may include
(but are not limited to) global issues in Textiles industry, cultural studies, why we wear clothing and
personal identity.
Design development 40%
Design development includes creating a stencil to be painted on your apron that reflects your personal
and cultural identity. This will be designed through research, critique, mind-mapping, colour theory,
journal entries, identity exploration and/or reflection exercises.
Apron construction 40%
Students will learn basic construction skills such as pattern layout, straight stitching, zigzag stitching,
seam finishes and pressing and apply these to their apron project.
Participation 10%
To include watching demonstrations, taking an active role in group activities, utilizing time appropriately
during lessons, completing work assigned, and being an active member in group discussions.


Course policies and classroom rules:

- Students are expected to be seated in class at the start of the block with all supplies and equipment and
ready to start work. Please bring a note signed by your parent or guardian to explain your attendance if
you happen to be absent.
- Students will respect the classroom environment, themselves, and others and will be engaged in their
learning opportunities at all times.
- Electronics are only to be used when they enhance learning opportunities.
- Food, beverage and gum are NOT permitted in the Textiles room due to expensive materials and
equipment being used
