History of Technology Presentation
How it Began
Jet engines began getting researched around the 1930's by German and British engineers. Even though propellers were mainly used at the time,
engineers started working on jet engines, knowing that they had potential. The first jet was secretly flown by the Germans in 1939 and used
against the allies in World War 2 for the first time in 1944. They could go up the 900km/h and had excellent armament but suffered engine
problems therefore giving them less range and reliability than propeller aircraft. After the war engineers started focusing on jet technology and
making it better.
Types of Jet Engines
Turbojets
Turbojets powered the first jet aircraft but now usually power missiles. They work by compressing air and mixing it with gas, then burning the
mixture and passing it through a nozzle as exhaust. They're faster than turbofans but are less efficient.
Turbofans
Turbofans are used on most aircraft such as airliners and fighters and are similar to turbojets. Unlike the turbojet, however, the turbofan has a
big fan in front of the compressor and some of the air that is sucked in, passes the jet part and comes out at a slower velocity than the exhaust
but with a higher mass, making it more efficient.
Ramjets and Scramjets
Ramjets and scramjets are currently used only for experimental aircraft and missiles because they're less efficient than turbojets and rockets at
low speeds. Ramjets and scramjets do not have a compressor so they can't be launched on their own power. The difference between them is
that a ram jet slows down air before mixing it and a scramjet doesn't. That means, a scramjet has to be launched at higher speeds but goes
faster.
Rockets
Rockets don't compress any air but simply burns chemicals to produce thrust. Therefore they are a lot faster than any other jet but run out of
fuel very quickly. They are used in rockets (duh), spacecraft, and missiles.
Types of Jet Aircraft
Commercial Aircraft
Commercial jet aircraft can either carry seats for passengers or be emptied out for cargo. They are usually powered by turbofan, have a straight
fuselage, and have the engines under the wings or on the rear fuselage. Also, most cargo planes usually have their wings mounted high.
Jet Aircraft
Jet fighters are designed to be as agile as possible. Some old jets used to have straight wings to have a lower cruising speed but nowadays jets
either have swept or delta wings. The engines are almost always in the back so there is space in the wings for weaponry.
Rockets and Missiles
Missiles are projectiles that carry explosives from one place to another. A missile is guided while a rocket is not. A missile is usually powered by
a rocket or turbojet but can also be powered by a turbofan or ramjet. They either have fins at the rear fuselage or wings. They do not need
pilots
