Last Child in the Woods (Conservation: Conflict or Coexistence?

Project Goals:
To foster environmental stewardship in students
To immerse students in the real world career of field biology
To teach students about ecosystems through experiential visits to the different ecosystems
in San Diego County
To bring awareness about local environmental concerns to students and the entire
HTHCV community through our Festival Exhibition
Essential questions:
1. Is it important to preserve and protect various ecosystems in San Diego County?
2. How are people impacting plants and animals in San Diego County?
3. What can we do to promote environmental stewardship within and beyond San Diego
County?
Products
1. Ecosystem specific vegetation and wildlife KEYRING Field Guides (to be used in the
field with pictures and key characteristic descriptors)
2. Recorded sounds of your field work and your particular ecosystem
3. Vegetation plot and wildlife observational analysis
4. Photo Gallery: three framed high quality photos (1 plant, 1 animal, and 1 landscape shot)

Week Topics
Week 1: January 21-25 -No school Monday MLK Day
-Project launch and presentation of ecosystems/predators
-Form groups and discuss project jobs
-Create vegetation and animal field guides
-Mr. Nick is gone Friday
Week 2: January 28-Feb. 1 -Tuesday: Groups 1/2 fieldwork expedition
-Hidden Heroes Exhibition (Wednesday Jan. 30

-Thursday: Groups 3/4 fieldwork expedition
-Friday: Groups 5/6 fieldwork expedition
*After your day in the field, please enter vegetation and
observational data into our Google spreadsheets and download
all images, videos, sound clips to your groups folder on the
hard drive.
Week 3: February 4-8 -Monday: Groups 7/8 fieldwork expedition
-Tuesday: Groups 9/10

-Thursday: Groups 13/14 fieldwork expedition
