Scientific Method Foldable

Having a foldable of the scientific method will be important to our learning as we

continue this year in science class. We will continue to refer back to it as we do
science experiments in class. Because of this is it important to have the foldable as
correct as possible.
Your foldable should look like the
following:
Observation
Hypothesis

Experiment
Analysis
Control
Independent Variable
Dependent Variable

The following story may help you to complete your foldable correctly.
Mr. Breakall Follows the Scientific Method
One day Mr. Breakall was in his secret laboratory doing science experiments.
He needed to color the water in a 500 gallon tank as quickly as possible. At first he
observed the color of the dye, the size of the tank and the temperature of the
water. As he was observing he wondered if the temperature of the water would
cause the dye to spread more quickly. Mr. Breakall then formed a hypothesis. He
hypothesized that if he put the food coloring in different temperatures of water,
then the dye would spread more slowly through the hot water because Mr. Breakall
runs slower when it is hot outside.
At this point he decided to set up an experiment, or a way to test his
hypothesis. He decided to put dye in cold, room temperature and hot water at the
same time. The most normal temperature of water was room temperature which
Mr. Breakall chose to be the control. The thing that Mr. Breakall changed in the
experiment was the temperature of the water or the independent variable. As he
put the dye in the water he noticed that the dye spread more quickly in the hot
water. He wrote in his lab notebook that the dependent variable of the
experiment was the speed that the dye spread throughout the water.
After he was done experimenting he needed to do an analysis of the data, or
information he collected. In his analysis he wrote down that his hypothesis was
incorrect because the dye spread faster through the hot water. He concluded that
if he heated up the tank of water than the dye would spread more quickly.

If you received an R on this assignment please try to correct those things that may
need to be fixed.
If you received a check or check plus on your assignment Id love to invite you to
draw a picture of an experiment on the back of your foldable.

Definitions
Observation
Using your 5 senses to gather information
Hypothesis
A prediction we can test
Experiment
A way to test a hypothesis
Analysis
Was your hypothesis right or wrong and why?
Control
The most normal situation in an experiment. For example: if we were using
cold, room temperature and hot water, the control would be the room
temperature water.
Independent Variable
What you change in the experiment. For example, the temperature of water.
Dependent Variable
What happens as a result of what you change in the experiment. For
example: how quickly the food would cook.
