It does not elude my notice that this course could potentially be a scary one for you% #his
introductory study of communication will challenge you in areas of yourself that you are
not even aware of yet% #erms li0e interpersonal and intrapersonal! cross1cultural! group
and public spea0ing! among others! will be e(plored through discussion and your own
demonstration% 2For e(ample! are you guilty of over1attribution) >ou?ll find out this

henever I underta0e a new tas0! I loo0 upon it as a new Aourney! a road that must be
traveled! a path that must be wal0ed% For the ne(t semester! we will be traveling a Aourney
together in our "peech class% :owever! I am not traveling this road alone% $ore
importantly! neither are you% e shall start together! and end up! side by side!
enlightened! and a little more in touch with what the concept of speech means to us%
#hrough that process! we will discover! in spite of ourselves! some of the things that
ma0e us tic0% e will learn many new things% I am counting on you to supply me with
your very own energy! enthusiasm! discipline! dedication! talents! and e(periences to

others% But this is only brought about by a constant immersion into the art and act of

will be involved in a series of impromptu speeches! as well% >ou will be given the chance

"ure! the Aourney may seem hard! difficult! and maybe even impossible for you!
especially those that truly fear getting up in front of people% #hat?s all right% e are all
scared! and this fear usually comes from the fact that we are afraid of the un0nown% e
will ma0e the an(iety filled area of public spea0ing 0nown% "peech is a world that can be
fun and revealing% But! it is also a world that demands discipline! hard wor0! and courage%
D(pect to use them% It is often impossible to have one without the others% #here is no easy
way out to improve our spea0ing s0ills% If it seems too easy! it probably is% But if you try
with an open mind! and a sense of courage! you will discover the eBuation that follows

It is imperative that everyone 0nows that this class is not a competition% e are all
talented and have important things to say% e are all creative% e are all nervous% 7one of

Ene of the areas that are integral in the success of this class is a familiarity with your
peers and classmates! so that our classroom shares in a free e(change of your ideas% >ou
