Body of Lesson: Write Objectives on the board before class begins.
Prior Knowledge: What have the students learned previously that will help them with this
lesson?

1. Opening Activity: Motivation
Journal Activity: What are the Odds? (Demonstrates the risk of pregnancy when parents
dont use birth control)
o When students arrive for class each one will choose a penny. (There should be the
equivalent of one penny per student with 85% of the pennies having a black dot
on them and 15% of them without a dot). The pennies represent a couple. The
black dots represent a couple that has gotten pregnant and started a family within
the first year of marriage. The blank pennies are those who have chosen not to
start a family within the first year of being together.
Statistic: 85% of couples would get pregnant if they had sex for a year
without any kind of birth control.
o Pick up the pennies and pass out another set. This set has only one penny with a
black dot. Explain to students that when using effective birth control only one set
of couples will become pregnant in one year
Out of 100 couples only one or fewer will get pregnant if they are using an
effective form of birth control.
o Question Response in Journals and Discuss
What is your reaction to the activity?
Parenting Readiness Unit #3
What are some ways to prevent pregnancy if you do not want to start a
family yet?

2. Developing Activity
Before Lesson Begins: Have cards with each vocabulary word on them. Pull one card at a
time and go through the words and their corresponding definition. Once you have gone
through each word, pass the cards out to pairs and have students quiz one another.
Students will move around the room for five minutes quizzing one another, or until all
pairs have been quizzed with each word.

Lecture/Discussion: Family Planning PPT
o Go through each slide within the PowerPoint.
Each slide has instructions and commentary within the slide notes
Make sure to ask questions to each student using the question stick pull
method. (draw a stick and have that student answer the question, or give
students their sticks and as they answer or contribute they hand in their
stick)
Students should also be filling out their Unit Notes pages as you go
through the Power Point.
o Activity: Commercial
Have students place themselves in groups of 3-4
Small groups will study one method of birth control (draw a method from
a hat)
If you cant get to the computer lab have bags with information
sheets in them and just have students create the product.
Students will be expected to know/find
What does it do? How does it work?
How effective is it?
How expensive is it?
Where can you get it?
Students will then create a 2-3 minute commercial about the birth control
method they received. The commercial should answer the above questions
Students will then perform their commercials for the class.

3. Closing Activity/Wrap Up
Have students write their answer to the following question on an exit card. Pick up exit card
before students are dismissed to leave class
o Based on what you have learned today, what do you think is the best method
of birth control for a sexually active couple? Why: based on medically
accurate information?
o Allow students the opportunity to discuss their answers

Accommodations:
I will record my presentations and have them available for all students to view and hear
so that they can pause and go back on an individual basis.
Parenting Readiness Unit #3
Special Needs: Before each unit students with special needs will receive a vocabulary list
with corresponding pictures. They will also receive an accommodated unit notes where
the answers will be on a separate worksheet and they will have to match the correct
answer within the notes.
ESL/ELL: Before each unit students with ESL/ELL will receive a vocabulary list with
pictures and translations that they can look over before lessons and discussion. They will
also receive a video document of myself saying each vocabulary word within the unit.
This will enable them to feel confident and comfortable with the new words before I try
to teach them.

Evaluation: What form of evaluation will you use for this lesson?
Daily Evaluation:
Have students write their answer to the following question on an exit card. Pick up exit card
before students are dismissed to leave class
o Based on what you have learned today, what do you think is the best method of
birth control for a sexually active couple? Based on medically accurate
information.
