Concept: Sustainability Looking at how feelings and attitudes affect the sustainability of the environment.

How can I look after
and protect places,
and why?

Prior knowledge (Year 2 achievement level, Geography):
They explain why places are important to people. (ACARA, 2014, p. 355.)
Students pose questions about familiar and unfamiliar places and collect information to answer these questions.

They represent data and the location of places and their features in tables, plans and on labelled maps. (ACARA,

They interpret geographical information to draw conclusions. (ACARA, 2014, p. 355.)
Lesson objective/s:
Students to recognise and appreciate that peoples feelings can influence how they think and act about protecting
places.
Evidence of learning:
Students to formulate three questions that they can ask visiting guests, an Indigenous elder and Mon Repos
Wildlife Ranger about place, conservation and sustainability.
Resources:
Power Point Presentation: Our Places
Sustainability Questionnaire graphic organiser.
Guest Speakers: Indigenous elder and Mon Repos Park Ranger.
Note paper and pencil case.
Introduction
(10 minutes.)
Begin lesson by explaining lessons focus: How can I look after and protect places and why?
Watch Power Point: Our Place. (Appendix 3, p.18.)
Sit students in a Yarning Circle for a group discussion about the Power Point. Ask
questions such as: Why do we need to protect things? How can we be actively involved with
protecting our environment? What makes some places more special than others, why? Who
should we talk to about sustainability and the environment?
Body

writing questions &
30 minutes for
guest speakers.)
Teacher to provide explicit instruction for completing Explain lesson task: To design and write
three questions they can ask our visitors. (Graphic organiser: Appendix 3, p. 19.)
Remind students of some of the questions that were posed, when discussing the power
point as a means of supporting how their construct their questions.
Students to sit in a Yarning Circle listening to guest speakers.
Remind students of respectful listening and using manners.
Conclusion
(10 minutes.)

Thank guest speakers for their invaluable time and knowledge.
Recap on lesson, clarify and assess student understanding of How can I look after and
protect places, and why?
Students will use new-found knowledge and information for the next lesson.
