Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 3 Observing, Documenting and Assessing to Support Young Children and Families
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that good documentation of
childrens assessments and learning can be important when deciding on what the child needs.
They a) Understanding the goals, benefits and uses of assessment and b) knowing about and using
observation, documentation and other appropriate assessment tools. They use this understanding to
document what the children know, what they need to learn or what they do not understand. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:
As part of my ECED 245 School Age Practicum course during the fall semester of 2013, I worked in a
third grade classroom and completed a case study on one child. The case study required documentation of
observations and assessments done in Piagets five developmental domains; cognitive, physical,
social/emotional, and creative.
Analysis of What I Learned:
As a result of completing my case study, I learned how to document many different observations and
assessments. From the first week until the last, I communicated with the childs grandmother, her guardian,
so I knew what areas to focus more time on. By observing and working with this child for over ten hours a
week, I was able to create and make assessments that benefited her most. Being in a classroom setting for
sixteen weeks gave me a better understanding of the different types of assessments used to help each and
every child succeed their goals. Many assessments were given during my time at the elementary school so the
teacher and I would know what areas the students needed help in. Assessments allow teachers to visually
point out areas the child is strong and/or weak at to help create different DAP activities that will benefit the
students the most.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This case study demonstrates my ability to collaborate with other professionals and families to set
specific goals for childrens educational needs. After I was aware of the childs needs, it was then that the
teacher and I made different assessments and activities to accomplish their educational goals. This project has
shown my ability to take my results and determine what goals the child needs to work on to overcome their
struggles. I am capable to assess a childs development through pictures, anecdotal notes, and old
assessments taken. To keep track of improvement, I used many different checklists to keep track of where the
child is at developmentally.
