Very X Too

The following grammar notes show the difference uses (and word order) of Very, Too and Enough.

Very and Too + adjective

1. The exam is very difficult, but Jim can complete it.
A prova muito difcil, mas o Jim consegue termin-la.

2. The exam is too difficult. Jim can't complete it.
A prova difcil demais. O Jim no consegue termin-la.

Very difficult = difcil, mas possvel para o Jim terminar a prova.
Too difficult = impossvel para o Jim terminar aprova.

Remember that Too implies a negative result.

Too + adjective + infinitive

1. Alex couldn't play basketball because he was too short.
O Alex no consegue jogar basquete porque ele muito baixo.

2. Alex was too short to play basketball.
O Alex era baixo demais para jogar basquete.

3. We are too tired to go to the gym.
A gente est muito cansado de malhar.

4. Mary was too ill to finish her food.
A Mary estava muito doente para terminar de comer.

Too + adjective + for (someone) + infinitive

1. I can't walk to Valparaiso because it is too far.
No consigo andar at Valparaiso, muito longe.

2. Valparaiso is too far for me to walk.
Valparaiso muito longe para eu andar at l.

3. It is too late for me to go out.
tarde demais para eu sair.

4. The price of the ticket is too expensive for Mike to fly to Europe.
O preo da passagem est cara demais para Mike voar at a Europa.
