I would like to take this time to welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year. My name is Major Lewis. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
Algebra 2 Honors: The purpose of this course is to continue the study of algebra and to provide the foundation for applying algebraic skills to other mathematical and scientific fields. The content will include, but not be limited to, the following: structure and properties of the complex number system; arithmetic and geometric sequences and series; relations, functions and graphs extended to polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions; varied solution strategies for linear equations, inequalities, and systems of equations and inequalities; varied solutions strategies, including the quadratic formula, for quadratic equations; conic sections and their applications; data analysis, including measures of central tendency and dispersion; probability, permutations, combinations, linear programming, deriving the quadratic formula, solving exponential and logarithmic equations, solving rational equations, and solving systems of quadratic equations.
Liberal Arts Math I: The purpose of this course is to continue the study of Algebra from the basics that they learned in middle school math. Its a comprehensive approach to learning and implementing the common core standards while preparing to retake the Algebra I End of Course (EOC) Assessment. We will be following Learning Maps put in place by the Polk County School District. The content will include but is not limited to basic tools of Algebra, solving equations, solving inequalities, solving proportions, applying proportions, graphing functions, systems of equations, systems of inequalities, exponents, exponential functions, polynomials, factoring, quadratic equations, quadratic functions, radical expressions, radical equations, rational expressions, and rational functions.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to demonstrate mastery of the Mathematics Florida Standards through various activities and various types of assessments.
Students will develop their knowledge of math skills and concepts to apply them to a variety of real world applications.
Students will increase their understanding of mathematical vocabulary through vocabulary activities and assessments.
Students will increase their understanding of reading and writing mathematical symbols through activities and assessments.
Students will increase their reading comprehension in mathematics through activities and assessments.
Students will be able to monitor their own progress through various assessments.
Students will do a variety of hands on activities and projects designed to increase their conceptual knowledge of math.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
Every student will be successful in math and complete their assignments.
Students will respect each other, teachers (including substitutes), and themselves.
Students will have a positive attitude, be prompt, polite, productive, and prepared.
Every student will ask questions when they dont understand a concept or skill.

Stay in constant contact with your parents/guardians via email, phone, or mail, etc. in efforts to help meet all of your academic needs.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS:
Substitute teacher are to be treated with as much respect as if it were me teaching. Be helpful and courteous. Sit in your regular assigned seats. Follow my instructions as given by the substitute for that day. Any name or class period reported by substitute for misconduct will result in your parents being contacted and followed up with the appropriate disciplinary measures.
GENERAL CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
Stay in seat and ask for permission to get up. Listen, stay focused, and follow directions. No electronic devices of any nature. No exceptions. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking. Students are to remain in the classroom at all times learning and on task.
ENTERING THE CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
Pick up any papers on table by the door as you enter. Upon the tardy bell stand at attention and wait for attendance to be taken. After attendance is taken you will be instructed to take seat. Follow the agenda written on the board and also write it in your notebook. Turn in the previous nights homework assignment.
LEAVING THE CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:
Check to make sure the homework assignment is highlighted on your monthly calendar AND that you have written it in your agenda/planner. Check to make sure the area around your desk is clean and neat. Make sure that you have two books under the desk (red and purple). Return any supplies borrowed from Major Lewis (calculators/pencils). Class will be called to attention and the class leader will dismiss you.
PASSES OUT OF THE CLASSROOM:
Students will have passes given to them each nine week session. Once the passes are gone leaving the classroom will only be permitted on emergency basis only. Sign the log sheet on table by the door and take the appropriate wooden pass. Students are allowed to bring bottled water (NO OTHER FOOD/DRINK ALLOWED)
TARDIES:
1 st & 2 nd tardy results in a Teacher Warning and/or Contacting the parent. 3 rd , 4 th , & 5 th tardy results in Conference w/ Commandant Cochran and parents. 6 th tardy results in Suspension.
ABSENCES:
When you are absent you are responsible for all missed work and notes. Look at your monthly calendar. Ask a fellow cadet. Major Lewis will give you a copy of the notes/assignments. Assignments not completed will be referred to School of Cadet.
DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES:
Minor infractions will result in one on one conference with the student after class or in guidance and/or contacting the parent. Continued infractions will result in parent teacher conference, lunch detention, and/or Saturday work detail. Major infractions will result in immediate referral and being sent to Major Bollens and/or Commandant Cochran.
GRADING POLICY:
Tests are worth 200 points each. Quizzes are worth 100 points each. RITCAs are worth 25 points each. Homework (depends on the assignment) worth approximately 10 to 100 points each. Notebook Check once per quarter worth 200 points. Projects are worth 100 500 points each.
GRADING SCALE:
A = 90 to 100 B = 80 to 89 C = 70 to 79 D = 60 to 69 F = Below 60
