Lesson 1
Building knowledge of the
field
The teacher will break down focus text to
students and model/demonstrate the
stages of writing an autobiography and will
scaffold students learning by providing
them to do the same on practice pieces.
This will strengthen their knowledge and
ability of being able to complete the final
required task.

Utilising the non-fiction
focus text
Hall, L. (2008). Alive in the death zone (1st
ed.). Milsons Point, N.S.W.: Random
House.
A key element in this unit will be for
students to climb Mt Everest just as the
author of the focus text had. This is
accomplished in stages of the unit. After
students have learned/mirrored an
element from the text from each lesson
theyll be able to move their photo I.D.
further up the picture of Mt Everest,
eventually reaching the summit

Responding to texts During the learning sequence children will
respond to various questions prompted by
situations and outcomes that Lincoln Hall
experienced throughout his life

Exploring texts Students will explore a range of elements
that comprise a text via various sources:
focus text, website activities, apps, Mt
Everest glossary board game

Students will focus on the text Alive in the
death zone, which entails Lincoln Halls
greatest achievement- climbing Mt
Everest and all the events that led up to
and followed this significant achievement.
Students will explore and investigate the
text. After learning key elements they will
then be required to mirror the text by way
of writing an autobiography which
highlights their greatest achievement in
life thus far or what they hope or are
working towards achieving in the future.
They will also be required to document
their story with photos/drawings, pictures
etc. as Lincoln Hall has done in his book.
This will also be accompanied by an oral
presentation.
