Music Training Survey Assessment
Brownsville Music Academy is a small, independently owned music school that provides an
outlet for young children and teenagers who want to further their musical education. The
percussion studio of the music academy strives to provide the best education and musical
experience for young drummers. The school wants an instructor that is not only proficient with
percussion, but that is able to provide practical education for younger students. We want to
make sure each candidate is certified to teach in the state of Texas and has the right
educational background. The survey asks multiple questions about background information and
education experiences.
Questions used on survey
1. Are you currently enrolled as a student?
2. How much experience do you have in the percussion field?
3. Do you play multiple instruments? (Not counting piano)
4. Which percussion instrument do you feel you are most proficient at?
5. How many years have you been an educator?
6. Do you have access to a smartphone or a device that contains email?
7. Do you have a vehicle that can successfully transport you from multiple locations?
8. Do you own your own personal instruments/sticks/mallets? (Not counting marimba,
timpani, etc)
9. Are you certified to teach music in the state of Texas?
10. Do you have access to the internet?

Results
This survey showed that while a majority of applicants had a strong background in percussion,
only a few were fully certified and able to teach fulltime. This shows that perhaps once the
others have finished school, they would be good applicants for our staff. The few that had
strong experience and certification have the opportunity to come in for an interview where
they will be reviewed and screened for practical purposes. The ones who were not could be
offered part-time, non-certified positions. I was surprised that most of them had a great deal of
percussion knowledge, but that was expected.
