The Common Curriculum Framework for Grades 1012
Mathematics includes pathways and topics rather than
strands as in The Common Curriculum Framework for
K9 Mathematics. Three pathways are available:
Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics,
Foundations of Mathematics, and Pre-calculus. A
common Grade 10 course (Foundations of
Mathematics and Pre-calculus, Grade 10) is the starting
point for the Foundations of Mathematics pathway and
the Pre-calculus pathway. Each topic area requires that
students develop a conceptual knowledge base and
skill set that will be useful to whatever pathway they
have chosen. The topics covered within a pathway are
meant to build upon previous knowledge and to
progress from simple to more complex conceptual
understandings. The topics covered in this course are
broken down into 3 strands: measurement, algebra
and number, and relations and functions.

Course Content
We will be using a workbook
for this course. To purchase
the workbook, the cost is
$20.00 and can be purchased
at the MRSS Caf-eh.
Copies will be made available
for borrowing from the library.

Expectations
Come to class on time with your appropriate materials.
Your workbook serves as a study guide and a valuable reference for quizzes and
unit tests. Homework completion is ESSENTIAL to be successful in this course,
thus your workbook will be assessed on a regular basis and given a score out
of 3 points:
o 1 - not working to potential, many assignments incomplete
o 2 - assignments mostly complete
o 3 - consistently completing assignments.
Students will maintain portfolios to track their progress. Step-up work will
be assigned to ensure a Foundations level knowledge is attained. This work
is completed during tutorials.
You are responsible for completing all notes and exercises given during the
course. IF YOU ARE ABSENT, make sure you borrow someone's workbook or
contact Kirsten_Urdahl-Serr@sd42.ca for a pdf copy of the lesson.

As part of a District pilot project to introduce
technology in classrooms, this course will include
the use of iPads. The iPads are intended to enhance
instruction, not replace it, and will only be used
when appropriate. A student contract for use of the
iPads must be signed by a parent/guardian prior to
use in the classroom. For viewing purposes, students
will be expected to supply their own earphones.

iPads in the Math classroom?
Seven mathematical processes
There are even mathematical processes that are critical aspects of learning,
doing and understanding mathematics. Students must encounter these
processes regularly in a mathematics program in order to achieve the goals of
mathematics education. Students will be expected to:
use communication in order to learn and express their understanding
make connections among mathematical ideas, other concepts in mathematics,
everyday experiences and other disciplines
demonstrate fluency with mental mathematics and estimation
develop and apply new mathematical knowledge through problem solving
develop mathematical reasoning
select and use technology as a tool for learning and solving problems
develop visualization skills to assist in processing information, making
connections and solving problems.
Activities that take place in your mathematics classroom will be based on a
problem-solving approach that incorporates the mathematical processes and
will lead students to an understanding of the nature of mathematics.

Evaluation

are most essential to
achievement are

On each report, your percentage will be based on all the work completed since
the beginning of the course (on a cumulative basis).
Please note that your overall mark is broken down according to the following:
Assessment Final Mark
Coursework (in-class notebook, homework, assignments, tests and quizzes)
Measurement and Trigonometry.25%
Polynomials, Number Systems, Exponents/Radicals 30%
Relations, Functions, Systems 45%
80%

Instructional Support

Math 10 Foundations and Pre-calculus is a fast-paced course with many new skills and an emphasis on problem-
solving. Staying on top of your weekly assignments is the key to success. If you require assistance, school tutorials
are available (look for poster for days/times/teachers). Online FREE tutoring can be found Sunday-Thursday
evenings from 6-10 pm at www.learnnowbc.ca as well, the MRSS Math Department provides a list of tutors for hire.
Each unit will be assessed on formative effort (group work, homework
completion, assignments, quizzes ~ 20%) and summative understanding
(exams, unit problems ~ 80%).

Rewrites?
Exam Rewrites will be offered to students on an individual basis. Students will be expected to complete a review
package AND attend tutorials in preparation. Rewrites will be scheduled April to June, 2015.
