The demographics of India are remarkably


diverse. India is the second most populous
country in the world, with over 1.18 billion
people (estimate for April, 2010), more than a
sixth of the world's population. Already
containing 17.31% of the world's population,
India is projected to be the worlds most
populous country by 2025, surpassing China its
population exceeding 1.6 billion people by

India has a population of 1,236,344,631

Growth rate is 1.51%

Birth rate is 20.22 births /1,000 population

Death rate 7.4 deaths /1,000 population

Life expectancy is 68.89 years

Male: 67.46 years

Female: 72.61 years



Language:
India has 28 states and seven territories, and
each has at least one official language. While
the national languages are Hindi and English,
there are about 22 official languages and nearly
400 living languages spoken in various parts of
the country. Most of the languages of India
belong to two families, Aryan and Dravidian.

Customs and Celebrations:

India celebrates Republic Day (Jan. 26),
Independence Day (Aug. 15) and Mahatma
Gandhi's Birthday (Oct. 2). There are other
Hindu festivals like Diwali, Holi, and the festival
of lights.

Main Religion: Hinduism and Buddhism.
84% are Hindus
13% are Muslims
7% Christians and Sikhs
Societies: Hierarchy
India is a hierarchical society. Whether in north
India or south India, Hindu or Muslim, urban or
village, virtually all things, people, and social
groups are ranked according to various essential
qualities. Although India is a political democracy,
notions of complete equality are seldom evident in

The architecture of India is the most well-
known example of Indian architecture. The
Taj Mahal, built by Mughal emperor Shah
Jahan to honor his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
It combines elements from Islamic, Persian,
Ottoman Turkish and Indian architectural
styles. India also has many ancient temples.
China is currently Indias top trading partner.
The United States and India share a strong and
growing economic relationship, driven by
entrepreneurial and visionary individuals,
institutions, and businesses in both countries.
This engagement, including trade, education,
cultural, and familial ties, has always been at the
leading edge of the U.S.



India has the tenth largest economy in the
world.
It has the third largest economy by
purchasing power.
India is today one of the worlds fastest
growing economies.
