Sheet Metal Utility Tray Lab Report

Patrick Schardt

Introduction:
This project involves solving a problem using a 9 x 7 piece of sheet metal to make a tray

Objectives:
To learn new skills and increase my knowledge of sheet metal and the tools used
Make a tray out of sheet metal

Parts Used:
Sheet Metal 1 piece (9 L x 7 W).
Rivets 4 tinners head

Processes Used:
Cutting Squaring shears
Notching Snips/Shears
Cleaning/Filing File, Steel Wool
Hemming Bar folder at 3/16
Bending Box and pan brake
Hole punching Tinners hand punch
Riveting Hammer

Procedure:
1. Etch the project described above (use drawing)
2. Cut on etch lines and notch corners
3. File any burrs
4. Hem sides at 3/16
5. Bend short sides & tabs to 90
6. Bend long sides to 90, keeping the tabs on the outside.
7. Punch 1/8 holes in tabs/sides
8. Install cold form Tinners head rivets
9. Clean box

Conclusion:
I feel I know more about the materials and processes I used. The drawing says to have the tabs for the rivets
on the two longer sides; these would be bent with the short side. When I was cutting the sheet metal, I
accidently cut the wrong pieces on the first tab. This tab is on the short side. Luckily I caught my mistake
and did the other tabs correctly. I was still able to make the tray.
