Comparing Graphs

All of the graphs below have qualities that are good and qualities that need to be improved. One of your
objectives in all science classes is to be able to produce quality graphs. Creating quality graphs is also a
component of the lab reports that you will be writing for all of the science classes you take in the Deer Valley
district.

As you look through the graphs below, consider each of the following: 1) Are the X- and Y-axis labeled with
specific details? 2) Does the graph contain a title that contains specific details? 3) Does the graph utilize the
space provided (or is it really small)? 4) Are the numbering systems used on the X- and Y-axis consistent? 5)
Is all of the data graphed within the provided space?

This is an assignment that I will be looking for on your Weebly website. Create a new tab titled Assignments
under your Chapter 1 Tab. If you forgot how to do this, there is a YouTube video that I have uploaded to my
class website that will walk you through the process. You can then add this assignment on your newly created
Assignments page. This can be done in one of two ways: 1) Use the Text tool and you can simply type
your responses onto the webpage or 2) Download this assignment to your computer (it is found under Student
Resources, Weebly Assignments. You can save it, type your answers directly onto it, then use the
Document tool on Weebly to upload your saved document. Students who use option 2 will receive extra
credit.

Graph 1:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:

The graph used the entire space of the paper and the y axis numbering is consistence as well as spaced properly

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
1. X and Y axis are not specifically labelled
2. This graphs lacks a title
3. X axis skips numbers
4. Graph is larger than the paper

Graph 2:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
1. Y axis is labelled properly

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
1. X axis doesnt have specific labels
2. Lacks a title
3. Graph doesnt use all the space
4. The X and Y axis are not numbered consistently

Graph 3:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
1. X and Y axis are labelled with specific details
2. X and Y axis are consistent with the numbering

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
1. Not all of the graphs space was used
2. Bars were clumped together
3. Lacks a title
4. Very very tiny

Graph 4:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
1. The numbering on X and Y axis are consistent
2. All of the space on the X axis is used

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
1. X and Y axis arent labelled at all
2. Graph lacks title
3. Graph doesnt use all of the space on the Y axis

Graph 5:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
1. X and Y axis is consistent with numbering

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
1. More of the graph can be used
2. Labels are needed on X and Y axis in specific details
3. Lacks a title

Graph 6:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:

1. X and Y axis is consistent, aside from the lack of 0
Identify what could be improved on this graph:

1. Lacks title
2. Too small
3. Lacks labels
4.

Graph 7:

Identify what is done correctly on this graph:
Graph 7 is same as 6

Identify what could be improved on this graph:
Graph 7 is same as 6

After having identified the pros and cons of each of the seven graphs above, identify which graph is the BEST
graph. Use evidence from your notes that supports your answer. Solidify your answer by making comparisons
between your selected graphs and the other graphs provided.

The best graph within my selection would have to be graph #2, not because its a good graph, but because its
the best out of the given 6. While all the other graphs are either too squished to read or lack labels, you can kind
of make out what the original data was, given that you have common sense. None of the graphs are fantastic, for
they all lack a title, specific labels and correctly spaced information. #2 also lacks the special needed though.
