- What is the focus of your investigation? - What do you hope to conclude? - Include a hypothesis (a prediction) for a quantitative report (heart rate/rating scale data) or a question for a qualitative report (focus group discussion) - What will you do to answer your hypothesis/question? - What data will you gather? - What will you do with this data? - How will you display your data? - To support your hypothesis/question what will your data show?
*The proposal should not exceed 250 words
INTRODUCTION to be completed collaboratively
- SACE approved research program on Aggression - What is your research topic? - What is your hypothesis/question? - What research design did you use? - Who is your sample? - Describe the process you used to gather your data - What did you do with your data (eg. Calculated mean values to compare) - How will you display your data? (eg. Table/graphs)
RESULTS to be completed collaboratively
- Graphs should include a heading eg. Mean Value of Participant scores - Summarise quantitative details in a table - Both x and y axis need to be labeled clearly - y-axis must start at zero - only graphs and tables should be included in this section no additional information, description and analysis of data
*please note the total word count for;
- the introduction, results and discussion is 1000 words
DISCUSSION to be completed individually
1. Discuss your graphs/tables make reference directly to the results on the graph/tables graph 1 and 2 have a 2.3% difference in mean value scores the graphs shows participants in group 2 responded more aggressively to. Was your hypothesis supported or not?
2. Sample my investigation had a unrepresentative sample group Lacked diversity eg. age, socio-cultural status, ethnicity etc.
3. Strengths of the investigation Strengths of an experiment random allocation, easy replication Weaknesses of an experiment extraneous variable didnt pay attention to brief visual/audio clip etc. situational variables outside noises etc. participant variables personality characteristics, motivation, emotional state, cultural background, intelligence, gender etc.
4. Strengths of the investigation design; Quantitative - easy to replicate, able to establish cause/effect relationship Qualitative participants may have provided ideas the researcher had not previously considered, discuss real world topics Strengths of the data; Strengths of quantitative data (heart rate monitor, rating scale)
5. Weaknesses of the investigation design; Quantitative subjective data (rating scale) - its subjective therefore we assume honesty and accurate recall Qualitative data (focus groups) its subjective, based on peoples opinions
(not compulsory to Stage 1 investigations) Validity has it accurately measured your hypothesis? External validity would you receive the same results in the real world? Reliability is there consistency in your results?
6. Ethical issues personalize to your investigation (mention positives & negatives) Confidentiality issued with 3 digit number Voluntary participation & Right to withdraw may have been compromised due to participant feeling they may be letting down the rest of the class or being pressured by the researcher Informed consent signed a form, was anyone under 16? Debriefing did we debrief at the end of the investigation?
7. Comment on how the investigation could be improved.
