INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE WRITING COMPOSITION

Your culminating activity in English 1 is composition writing. This will assess how well you can integrate your
knowledge of sentence structure, paragraph development tools, and your skill in outlining, prcis writing, and
paraphrasing.
It is always better to start early; hence, detailed here are the steps that can guide you in the writing process.
First, think of your composition as organic. It should develop as we progress in our lecture and discussions.
More time pondering on relevant themes will also allow your thoughts to crystallize and therefore become
clearer.
As prompt to your writing project, watch and experience the play titled Love in the Time of Kapeng Barako
on September 15, 2014 (1:30pm, 4:00pm, 7:00pm) at the Baker Hall (Tickets available at the ComAss booth,
Hum Building). For more purposive reading of the themes, be guided by the following questions:
1) What are the different forms of love depicted in the play?
2) How can local industries (in this instance, the Kapeng Barako industry) strengthen community
identity?
3) Which can better steer a community to progress, competition or cooperation?
4) In what ways are the conflicts between the communities (in the play) similar to the conflicts we
observe in the larger Philippine society?
5) What does the play say about a) globalization; b) cultural heritage and identity; c) societal change and
transformation; d) the kapwa culture of the Filipinos; and e) social responsibility and nationalism?
Note: You do not need to submit your answers to the guide questions. However, it is imperative that you think
these through because these serve as your preliminary ideas for the composition.
Second, go over the suggested reading materials. These are sources of germane ideas for your writing
composition. Of course, you are encouraged to mine for other relevant readings.
1. Nicanor Perlas articles (hard copy)
2. ASEAN Economic Community: Are we ready for 2015? by David Lozada (link:

3. Para sa Bayan: Dangal at Husay by Jose Marella (link: http://www.rappler.com/move-ph/ispeak/56600-up-

Third, do the usual pre-writing activities, such as brainstorming, mind mapping, clustering, and free writing.
Fourth, after doing all the preparations, start crafting your topic sentence (for paragraphs) and thesis
statement (for the composition). Once set, you can start making an outline.
Fifth, employ all the reading and writing strategies you have learned from both your lecture and recitation
classes.
Finally, write, revise, rewrite, edit, and polish your draft for submission.
