In the period from 461-431 B.C. is called the Golden Age of Greece. Athens under
the leadership of a man called Pericles became the strongest and most advanced
city in Greece. Under Pericles’ rule, the city of Athens, which had been burned by
the Persians, was rebuilt. The center of the new Athens was on a hill called the
Acropolis. Here beautiful temples were built in honor of the gods. The finest and
most expensive temple was the Parthenon. It was a white marble temple built for
the worship of the goddess Athena.
The Athenians lived simple lives, ate plain foods and lived in houses that
were almost bare. Their clothes were graceful but simple tunics. Above all else the
Athenians loved beauty. During the Golden Age they produced some of the
greatest sculpture, architecture, and drama known to the world.
