TheOpportunityDivideissomethingthatpartitions6millionyoung,talentedadultsfrom14
millionpostsecondaryjobsthatrequirethemtohavepostsecondaryeducationstheyareoftenswept
undertherug,becauseofbeingunemployedorbetweenjobs.Therearemanyfactorsthatwidenthe
divide,andwaysthatitaffectsyoungadultsglobally.AnOpportunityDivideIobservedisthat6
millionhighschoolgraduateshavebeenoverlooked,butnotlookataseconomicresources.Theterm
relatestomylifeexperiences,becauseitmayaffectnotjustme,butmyfuture,ifitisnotbridged.And
therearewaysthatthedividecouldbebridgedorcoincide.
Theseoverlookedindividualshavealottooffertotodayseconomyandjobs,becausetheyare
drivenbytheirmotivationforsuccessandtheirtalents.InsomeAfricancountries,forexample,people
cannotfindjobs,becausetheyhavepostsecondaryeducationandtheirskillsaretooadvancedforany
jobsintheircountries.InAmerica,forexample,youngadultscouldntgetcertainjobs,becausethey
didnthavepostsecondaryeducationsortheycouldntaffordtogototopostsecondaryschools.Some
youngpeoplefaceimpediments,suchaspoverty,meaningfulemploymentopportunities,andlackor
guidance,thatdonotallowthemtoshowtheirtruepotential.Otherindividualsfaceindecision,suchas
financialhardships,whichdoesnotallowthemtoaffordpostsecondaryeducationorthetrainingforthe
skillsneededforthejobsoftoday.Itisofsignificantimportancetoclosethedividesothatthefuture
generationsofyoungadultsdonthavetofacehardships,sothattheycanbeguidedtotheirownand
professionalsuccess.
Inmypersonalopinion,therearemanywaystobridgethedividewiththeleverageof
technology.OnewayIwoulddoitisbystartingaprogram,muchliketheYearUpprogram,that
teachesyoungadulttechnologybasedlearning.Myprogramwouldteachyoungadultshowtousenew
technologyinhumanresources.Myprogramwouldalsoassistyoungadultsinlearningaboutnew
technologythroughcoursesaboutthetypeofjobsandthetechnologyusedinthelineofworkstheyare
interestedin.AlsoIdencourageyoungadultstoseekadditionalassistancefromorganizations,suchas
TheInternationalYouthFoundationandTheClintonFoundation,sothattheycanbefullyequipedfor
todaysjobs.AlsoIwouldpartnerupwiththeClintonFoundation,sothatIcouldhelpaddressthe
problemoftheOpportunityDivide,sothatmorebusinesscanbemoreawareoftheissueandadopt
theideaofyouthemploymentbusinessesandmeaning.Withtheleverageoftechnologyandmyideas
thedividecanbeclosedandnotreallyconsideredaproblemformillionsofpeople.
ItisimportantthattheOpportunityDivideisclosedsothatfuturegenerationsdontface
hardshipsthatarecurrentlyfacedinmodernsociety.Thedividemakesitdifficultforyoungadultsto
obtaingreatjobswithouttheassistanceofaprogramsororganizations.Youngadultscannotalwaysrely
onprogramsthatwanttoclosethedivideallthetime,becausenoteveryoneworldwidecan
accommodated.Astheyearspassthenumberofindividualswhohavegraduatedhighschoolandare
unemployedwillincreaseifsomethingisnotdonesooneraboutthedivide.TheOpportunityDivide
cancoincideifalleffortsaretowardassistingtheyoungandensuringamajorityofthemreceive
wellpayingjobsoutofthe3.7millioncurrentlyopenandtheonescurrentlybeingopenoverthenext
coupleofyears.
Inconclusion,therearewaysthatthedividecouldbebridgedorcoincide,andwiththeleverage
technology,itcanbemadepossible.ProgramsliketheYearUpprogramandtheInternationalYouth
Foundationarejustafewwaystheleverageoftechnologyhelpbridgethedivide.TheOpportunity
Dividecanonedaybebridgedprogramsliketheseandotherformsofassistanceoreasiertouse
technology,butonlytimecantell.
