Flag Football 2014

Terms:

Blocking- method used to prevent the defensive teams from tackling the ball carrier or
open a running lane.
Center- the player on the offensive team that snaps the ball to the quarterback.
Cornerback- defensive player who guards a wide receiver.
Defense- the team that does not have possession of the ball.
Forward pass- a pass that is thrown forward from behind the line of scrimmage.
Fumble- When a secured ball is dropped while running, anyone can pick it up and run
towards the goal line.
Handoff- when a backeld player receives the ball from the quarterback.
Incomplete pass- a forward pass that is not caught and results in a dead ball.
Interception- when the defense catches the pass intended for the other team.
Lateral Pass- a pass that is thrown sideways or backwards.
Line of scrimmage- imaginary line that is even with the ball on offense and 3 steps off
the ball on defense. Both teams must stay behind the line until ball is snapped.
Offense- the team in possession of the ball
Tackle- pulling the ball carriers ag
Quarterback- the player that receives the snap from the center and elects to run,
hand off, or pass the ball.
Wide Receiver- offensive player who runs from line of scrimmage to receive a pass
from quarterback.

Skills:
Passing and catching
1. Grip the ball by placing the thumb and index nger on the back of the ball; spread the
other ngers across the laces of the football.
2. Keep two hands on the ball until you are ready to throw it for stability.
3. Step towards your target and follow through after releasing the ball.
4. Create a target with your hands.
5. Meet the ball with your hands; go after the ball.
6. Try to catch the ball with both hands
Pass patterns and how to defend a receiver
1. Before catching a ball, get into an open area by running a pattern/route.
2. The purpose of running patterns is to elude a defender.
3. Run at a controlled speed.
4. The rst move for defending pass patterns/routes is always backwards.
5. Defenders should never allow a receiver to get behind them.
6. Try to intercept or knock down any balls thrown to a receiver.
Handoffs and ball carrying
1. Always cover the tip of the ball with the hand.
2. When numerous players are in the area, cover the ball with both hands.
3. When running in a stretch of open eld, make sure the ball is away from the side with the
defenders.
4. Do not reach out for the handoff; the quarter back will hand it to you.
5. Let the quarter back place the ball in your mid-section.
6. Grasp the ball with two hands until you are in the open eld.
Blocking and tackling (removal of ag)
1. Never block below an opponents knees or in their back.
2. Be sure to have a stable base of support.
3. Keep your feet moving and drive your opponent downeld.
4. Focus on the opponents ag(s).
5. Keep feet moving to stay in front of the ball carrier.
6. Quickly move in and remove your opponents ag.
Punting and place kicking
1. Grip the ball with the laces up.
2. Drop the ball to the foot after taking a two step approach.
3. Strike the ball with the foot and follow through.
4. Slowly approach the ball from a distance of 7 to 10 yards.
5. Plant the non-kicking foot about 12 inches behind and to the side of the ball.
6. Focus on the ball, trying to strike it just below the midline.
Team play and strategy
1. Learn to vary the offensive plays to avoid detectable patterns.
2. Keep plays simple but creative.
3. Try to move the ball forward on each down.
4. For defense try to stop the ball from moving forward on each play.
5. Keep the faster players on defense as defensive backs to defend long passes.
6. Use the linemen to rush the passer/quarterback and to stop the run.

Scoring:
1. Touchdown= 6 points (when the offense runs or passes the ball across the goal line)
2. Conversion= 1 point (extra point scored after a touchdown)
3. Safety= 2 points (when the defense tackles the offense behind their own goal line)

Rules:
General
1. Teams gain rst downs by advancing the ball beyond the next quarter or center lines
2. Teams have four downs to make a rst down

3. Players cannot use their hands to block, hold, or protect their ags

4. Offense should center the ball on each down

5. Any one may catch a pass

Kick Off

1. The ball is kicked (we will punt) from the quarter line. All members on the kicking team must
stay behind the ball until it is kicked

2. The receiving team lines up on the quarter line until the ball is kicked

3. A ball going past the goal line will be downed at the quarter line

4. If the kicking team beats the receiving team to the ball, the receiving team begins its series of
downs where the kicking team rst touched the ball

5. There are no laterals or kick returns in ag football

6. A ball kicked out of bounds is awarded to the receiving team where it went out

Penalties

1. Holding- 5 giant steps
2. Off Sides- 5 giant steps
3. Unnecessary Roughness- 15 giant steps
4. Illegal Flags- 10 giant steps
5. Illegal Tackle- 10 giant steps
