Lesson Plan
Year Level: 7
Date/Time: 27.08.14
Learning Area/ACARA focus: History
Lesson Focus: Ancient World
Class Size: 20
Duration of Lesson: 1 hour

Background information:
- Students have already completed some work and have read about migration
to Australia
- Possibly students have watched documentaries on the television

Teaching/Learning Purpose(s) (written in terms of outcomes):
Curriculum: History
The following content is to be taught as part of an overview for the historical period. It
is not intended to be taught in depth. An overview will constitute approximately 10%
of the total teaching time for the year. Overview content identifies important features
of the period, approximately 60 000 BC (BCE) c.650 AD (CE), as part of an
expansive chronology that helps students understand broad patterns of historical
change. As such, the overview provides the broader context for the teaching of depth
study content and can be built into various parts of a teaching and learning program.
This means that overview content can be used to give students an introduction to the
historical period; to make the links to and between the depth studies; and to
consolidate understanding through a review of the period.
Overview content for the ancient world (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Greece, Rome,
India, China and the Maya) includes the following:
The theory that people moved out of Africa around 60 000 BC (BCE) and migrated to
other parts of the world, including Australia.(ACOKFH001)
- What changes are believed to have occurred to the climate and geography of
Australia from around 50 000 years ago through to 10 000 years ago.
- How were the plants and animals of ancient Australia different to the plants
and animals of today?
- What were changes that occurred to technology in ancient Australia?
- By about 10 000 years ago what tools and weapons were in use in ancient
Australia?

Preparation:
- Print out the worksheet for students
- Have some visuals for them to look at
- Have some research done on the topic

Learning Experiences:
1. How will I engage the learners?
- Interact with the students, ask them questions and allow them to frequently
respond.
- Use visual stimuli for increasing novelty in the learning task
- Give students choices when they answer
- Use students to teach other students.

2. Student tasks and activities (What will the students do to achieve the lesson
purpose(s)?)

- Read through the paragraphs with kids
- Have them make a poster on changing climate and changing technology. (
maybe in pairs)

3. Conclusion (How do you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
purpose(s)?)

- The poster will give them an understanding of Changing climate and changing
technology.
- Have the students discuss their posters with others.

4. Assessment and evaluation: (How do you know the students have achieved
the learning purpose(s)? Evaluate your own performance.)
- I can evaluate by marking their posters and checking that what they have
used on their posters is valuable information and relevant to the topic.
- I can evaluate myself by observing their actions and writing a reflection on
how they approached the activities.
