5 min Explanation of the Different
Types of Advertising
strategies used to get people to
buy products:
*Ask how many have seen
these advertisements and how
many of them have bought
these foods
-Color/design: companies use
bright colors, specifically reds
and yellows to grab your
attention
-Celebrity Endorsement: when
celebrities are shown in the ad,
that makes you want to buy
the food, since you want to be
just like them.
-Child models: when ads use
children that you can relate to,
it makes the food seem like

something that would be
normal to buy
-Cartoon/TV characters: since
kids enjoy watching TV, they
are much more likely to buy
food that is sold by those
characters or that displays
those characters
-Food is fun: many ads have
an overall theme of happiness
and good times, which makes
kids interested in the product
-Spokes-characters (tony the
tiger, etc.): these characters
are well-liked and kids will
associate their foods with
good feelings
-Prizes/contests: if you think
you will win something by
buying a certain food, you will
buy more of it
-Taste: many food ads will
emphasize the taste so that
people will want to try it
*write all the 8 categories on
the board
Ask why is it important to
understand these influences?
(because they affect what we
choose to eat and because
many of the foods that are
being advertised in this way
are high is sugar and fat, and
are unhealthy for your body,
these snack foods are often
eaten in front of the TV and
are more likely to be
consumed in great amounts,
even when people are not
hungry)
10 min Activity:
1. Divide the students
into pairs based on
where they are sitting.
2. Explain activity: work
together with your
-Variety of healthy and
unhealthy advertisements (for
a class of 20, you need about
60 ads)
- Markers for each student
partner to decide
which food item is
healthier.
3. Pass out each pair a
group of six
advertisements (three
healthy, three
unhealthy)
4. Give students 5 min to
decide which is
unhealthy and which is
healthy.
- They are to do this
by circling each
part of each ad that
they think would
influence them to
buy it or that would
determine whether
or not it is healthy
5. Each group can share
one healthy and one
unhealthy
advertisement to the
class and how they
made their decision.
5 min Follow Up Discussion:
-Notice how the foods that
were advertised in this way
were all unhealthy?
-It is important that you be
able to understand the power
of these ads
-Though it is ok to eat these
foods once in a while, they
cannot be eaten regularly since
they are bad for your health.

Introduction (Anticipatory Set) 5 min:
o Gather students into a circle
o Discuss the definitions of healthy and unhealthy foods
o Show the eight different unhealthy advertisements while asking
students why these ads were appealing to them.
Lesson focus (Body of Lesson)15 min:
o Describe different aspects of how ads influence kids:
o Color/design: companies use bright colors, specifically reds and
yellows grab your attention
o Celebrity Endorsement: when celebrities are shown in the ad, that
makes you want to buy the food, since you want to be just like
them.
o Child models: when ads use children that you can relate to, it
makes the food seem like something that would be normal to buy
o Cartoon/TV characters: since kids enjoy watching TV, they are
much more likely to buy food that is sold by those characters or
that displays those characters
o Food is fun: many ads have an overall theme of happiness and
good times, which makes kids interested in the product
o Spokes-characters (tony the tiger, etc.): these characters are well-
liked and kids will associate their foods with good feelings
o Prizes/contests: if you think you will win something by buying a
certain food, you will buy more of it
o Taste: many food ads will emphasize the taste so that people will
want to try it
o Ask why it is important to understand these influences?
(Because they affect what we choose to eat and because many of
the foods that are being advertised in this way are high is sugar and
fat, and are unhealthy for your body)
Applied Activity- 10 min:
o Split into pairs and supply each group with three unhealthy
advertisements and three healthy advertisements. Have them circle
all the different things that make them want to buy the food (what
we talked about above)
o Each group will present one healthy and one unhealthy ad and why
they circled certain things
Closure/Evaluation:
o Follow Up Discussion:
-Notice how the foods that were advertised in this way were all
unhealthy?
-It is important that you be able to understand the power of these
ads
-Though it is ok to eat these foods once in a while, they cannot be
eaten regularly since they are bad for your health.
o Go home and write down how many unhealthy advertisements
they see during one hour of TV watching. Describe one specific ad
in a paragraph and turn it in to me. Explain what techniques they
use, why it is appealing, and what you could eat as an alternative.
Please have your parent sign your sheet that they have read over
your paragraph
