something that would be normal to buy -Cartoon/TV characters: since kids enjoy watching TV, they are much more likely to buy food that is sold by those characters or that displays those characters -Food is fun: many ads have an overall theme of happiness and good times, which makes kids interested in the product -Spokes-characters (tony the tiger, etc.): these characters are well-liked and kids will associate their foods with good feelings -Prizes/contests: if you think you will win something by buying a certain food, you will buy more of it -Taste: many food ads will emphasize the taste so that people will want to try it *write all the 8 categories on the board Ask why is it important to understand these influences? Divide the students into pairs based on where they are sitting. 2. Explain activity: work together with your -Variety of healthy and unhealthy advertisements (for a class of 20, you need about 60 ads) - Markers for each student partner to decide which food item is healthier. 3. Pass out each pair a group of six advertisements (three healthy, three unhealthy) 4. Give students 5 min to decide which is unhealthy and which is healthy. - They are to do this by circling each part of each ad that they think would influence them to buy it or that would determine whether or not it is healthy 5. Each group can share one healthy and one unhealthy advertisement to the class and how they made their decision. 5 min Follow Up Discussion: -Notice how the foods that were advertised in this way were all unhealthy? -It is important that you be able to understand the power of these ads -Though it is ok to eat these foods once in a while, they cannot be eaten regularly since they are bad for your health.

Have them circle all the different things that make them want to buy the food (what we talked about above) o Each group will present one healthy and one unhealthy ad and why they circled certain things Closure/Evaluation: o Follow Up Discussion: -Notice how the foods that were advertised in this way were all unhealthy? -It is important that you be able to understand the power of these ads -Though it is ok to eat these foods once in a while, they cannot be eaten regularly since they are bad for your health. o Go home and write down how many unhealthy advertisements they see during one hour of TV watching. Describe one specific ad in a paragraph and turn it in to me. Explain what techniques they use, why it is appealing, and what you could eat as an alternative.
