Professor: Dr. Rachel Polando
Office: 217 Science Center
Office Hours: Posted outside my office
Phone: 260-982-5107
E-mail: REPolando@manchester.edu. I will attempt to respond within 24 hours. Please put Human
Biology in your subject line to alert me about a class issue.

Course Objectives:
You will gain a basic understanding of biology and the human body through lecture, discussion, and
inquisitive thinking. We will focus on the different body systems and how they interact to maintain
homeostasis within the organism. Throughout the semester, we will use demonstration and hands-on
learning to achieve a greater understanding of and appreciation for the human body. I intend to give you
the tools you need to evaluate scientific, scientific, and non-scientific information to make informed
decisions.

What to expect from me:
I will do my best to actively engage your thinking during class time and will create stimulating
opportunities for your learning in several ways. I will incorporate multiple learning styles as well as
multiple evaluation styles to maximize student comprehension and learning. I welcome ideas and
positive suggestions, with the goal of improving the course. I try to practice what I preach as a scientist.
Remember, I am learning along with you.

Textbook:
Human Biology, 11
th
Edition, Sylvia S. Mader.
We may use supplemental readings as well.

Evaluation:
I reserve the right to add small assignments as necessary throughout the semester (worksheets,
questionnaires, etc.) to help your comprehension of the material. I will announce these in advance along
with the total points available for that assignment.

Student Presentation: 50 points
Participation/engagement/Attendance: 50 points
Worksheets: 7@ 5 points each total: 35 points
Writing assignments: 5 @ 25 points each total: 125 points
Peer review of paper 3 @ 10 points each total: 30
Exam 1: 75 points
Exam 2: 75 points
Exam 3: 75 points
Exam 4: 75 points
Final Exam: 100 points

Student Info sheet: 5 additional points (extra credit)

Grading:
Grades are based on results, not effort. I strive for fairness and use several different grading criteria to
meet the needs of all students. All assignments must be complete and on time; no late assignments
will be accepted. If you believe there is a discrepancy on a quiz or exam you will need to submit the
discrepancy to me in writing and with the exam or quiz in question, I will re-grade the ENTIRE item and
return it to you.

Classroom Conduct:
All students will conduct themselves in a way to promote learning, with respect for both the professor and
their fellow students. I will not tolerate disrespect to anyone in any form. This includes, but is not
limited to, cell phone usage, Internet usage, reading, and doing other work while in class. Those not
adhering to this policy will be marked absent.

Class Preparation:
You should read the chapter to be discussed in class prior to your arrival. This gives you the opportunity
to incorporate and reinforce the topics for discussion. Failure to read the material prior to class will
directly impact your ability to participate and be involved in the classroom.

Attendance and Participation:
Attendance is mandatory. You will have 2 unexcused absences; habitual missing of classes for
unexcused reasons will results one letter grade subtracted from your participation points. Absence will
cause you to miss information that will be on the exam and opportunities for participation/engagement
points. I expect that each student will read the assigned reading before class and be able to ask and
answer questions. I encourage each of you to be actively involved in the lecture, asking questions,
answering questions, note taking, and asking questions outside of class. For clarity and ease of
understanding participation, I will evaluate it based on each student turning in a 3 X 5 card at the end of
each class. This card will contain your name, one important thing you learned in class, and one question
you had over the content from that class. Note cards are available for FREE in the Success Center.

Point breakdown (2 or less absences)
50- participates regularly, missing 2 or less note cards
40-49 participates occasionally, missing 3-4 note cards
30-39 infrequent participation, missing 5-6 note cards
20-29 Rarely participates, missing 7-8 note cards
11-19 struggling to participate, missing 9-10 note cards
10 No participation, missing more than 10 note cards

Presentation:
Groups of 5 students will be randomly assigned and allowed to choose a topic of interest. The students
must work together to make a lecture on the topic and each student must generate 3 exam questions and
answers, which are NOT to be shared with anyone. Failure to adhere to this will result in my writing of
the entire final exam and not using the questions submitted. Each classmate will grade the group
members, and group members will grade one another. I MUST meet with groups before their
presentation to practice or troubleshoot. The presentation MUST be turned in 24 hours prior to the lecture
time. I am also always available to help with the content, book images, and presentation.

Topics:
Chapter 14: Development and Aging
Supplement: Infectious disease, this group will need to add information
Chapter 18: Patterns of chromosome inheritance
Chapter 19: Cancer
Chapter 20: Patterns of genetic inheritance
Chapter 21: DNA biology and technology

Make Up Exams:
Excused absences are allowed, however you are required to inform me of these at least 2 days before the
exam date. Absence will only be allowed for illness (which will need to be documented), travel for
Graduate/Professional school interviews, and family emergencies. I must be notified before the exam
begins.

Quizzes:
Will be available on ANGEL and will consist of 10 questions, you will have 30 minutes to take the quiz
with a total of 2 opportunities. The question format will be multiple choice. The quiz will cover the
chapter to be discussed the next class period and will close at 8 am the day of class.

Worksheets:
These will assist you with more confusing topics and help to reinforce the lecture. They are due at the
beginning of class the next day.

Point of View Papers:
These papers should be 500-700 words in length and will cover the topic we discuss in class. Following
the class discussion you will write a paper with a view point supported by credible sources. Your
opinion, while important, must be supported by factual information and properly cited.

Exams:
Format will be matching, short answer, essay, or descriptive. These will test your overall ability to
integrate the lectures and the bigger picture. They may require you to draw on previously learned
materials. All backpacks will be placed in the front of the room at the start of the exam.

How to Succeed:
1. Attend class
2. Participate in class discussion
3. Read the pages assigned BEFORE class
4. Do not copy the slides- I will post the lectures after class
5. Study with a buddy
6. Do not memorize facts
7. Ask QUESTIONS!
8. Attend the review sessions
9. E-mail me with questions
10. I am not that reliable. If I dont write it down it never happened. E-mail me to confirm
meetings
