Design Situation

Cooking is as popular as ever in Australia with television programs featuring

celebrity chefs, and even reality television using food as an entertainment medium.
The insatiable demand for new food ideas is reflected in the cookbook market with
a huge, array of titles and themes targeting anyone and everyone! The choice of
food in Australia is only limited by the new and exciting ideas of preparation,
cooking and presentation.

Task (1)
Expand the above situation by rewording it to include examples. How could the
design be met? Suggest a least two ways.

In Australia cooking is becoming more and more popular as there are shows like
Master Chef, Junior Master Chef and My Kitchen Rules. Most of these T.V. shows
feature famous chefs and food taste testers like Manu, Matt Preston and Anna Gare.
Now that people realise how good food is and what you can actually do with it they
are becoming greedy for more, unique recipes and that is shown in the verity of
cook books that are on the market. Each cook book has a different theme that is
directed at almost anyone and everyone! Australias choice in food can only be
restricted by the new unrealistic ideas that are being made real by the chefs known
as Celebrity Chefs. These fascinating designs are exciting in the means on
preparation, cooking and presentation; people just cant wait to get their hands on
them.

The design brief is usually given to the designer by the client. It is a genuine need
that has been identified or created.

Design Brief
Your design brief is: To help design a digital cookbook for the school community to
sell as a fundraiser.

Task (2)
This statement needs to be explored by identifying the key words and defining what
they mean. Retype this as "Your Design Brief.

Key Words:
- Design: a plan or drawing created to show the look and function of building,
garment or any other object before it is made. (plot)
- Digital: produced using a form of technology.
- Cookbook: a book containing recipes and other information about the
preparation and cooking of food.
- School: a place where children through to young adults/teenagers go to
learn and be educated.
- Community: a group of people living in the same place or having a particular
characteristic in common. (selection of people)
- Sell: give or hand over in exchange for money. (put up for sale)
- Fundraiser: an event held to make money to support a charity, cause or any
other operation.

Design Brief in Own Words
Your design brief is: to help plot a computer generated book with recipes for
a selected amount of people in the school area. The book will then be put up
for sale as a potential money maker.

Limitation
1. The act of limiting or the state of being limited.
2. A restriction.
3. A shortcoming or defect.
4. Law A specified period during which, by statute, an action may be brought.
Your (3)
During class you will brainstorm the limitations or constraints for this project. Your task
is to identify a minimum of 5 of these limitations and discuss how they impact on your
project. As an extension to this activity, discuss ways to reduce the impact of these
limitations.

Time Can my dish be cooked in 1 hour? In 1 hour we have to
cook our dish, clean up, wash up etc. so I am going to
have to choose a dish that can be cooked in roughly
about 45mins. So something like a baked dinner is not
going to be on my list.
Knowledge When it comes to cooking I think I have the basic
knowledge like how to use a knife properly and how to
boil water etc. all the basic things but I would have no
clue how to cook a chicken or make soup, so that would
be something that I have to extend on further,
Resource availability In the kitchen at school we dont have every kitchen
tool or utensil under the sun but I think we have the basic
knifes, peelers, garlic crushes, ovens, stoves, microwaves,
chopping boards, running taps, but we dont have
things like pasta makers, slow cookers, pie dishes etc.

Even though we have all of the basic resources for
cooking we are limited to them because there are a
number of us cooking in the kitchen at one time so I
should choose a recipe that doesnt require a big use of
resources just to be on the safe side.
Work space availability As I said there are quite a lot of us just in one kitchen so
the space is going to be limited by what we can use and
when we can use it and also how we work in the kitchen.
I wont be able to just walk up the oven and use it I
might be able to but will most likely have to wait until the
other person has finished so I will need to choose a
recipe that gives me the ability to do different steps at
one time.
Skills I do not have many useful skills when it comes to cooking
I can only do the basics like cut and peel but I would
have no idea how to poach and egg or deep fry a
chicken (even though we are not allowed to be doing
that) so it limits me to what recipe I can choose.

When it comes to computer or technology I have the
general skills that I would need to create an effective
cook book but I could use my research and investigation
time to improve my skills in this area.
Materials availability Things we can and cant use like peanuts and we arent
allowed to do like melting sugar, again limits me to what
recipe I will choose. Also the fact that my dish has to
savoury limits my choices again.

The digital cookbook has to be digital which means it
has to be on a computer and cannot be printed off. I
may not have the latest you beaut technology which
limits me to what I can and cannot do.
Money The budget has to be negotiated with my parents; how
much they are happy for me to spend on this project
and I dont really want to be paying for anything to do
with technology when it comes to the design and
making of my cook book as I know that there are other
FREE options that are nearly the same.
Equipment that we have I dont have everything that I may need to make a 5 star
savoury meal but I do have all of my basic needs to help
with the production of my 2-4 star finished product which
I am yet to choose.

My finished cookbook has to be interactive but do I
have the equipment that I need will need to create the
cookbook but I could research and investigate other
possible ways to make my cookbook.

Criteria is a list of principles to be tested

Criteria for Success

Task (4)
At the conclusion of the project you will be asked to JUDGE how successful your
project is based on what you set out to achieve. To do this you need to create a list
of criteria, at the beginning of the project that your final design MUST have in order
for it to be deemed a success.

Example:

Cookbook Page

1. Must be attractive and interesting to the viewer.

2. Must fit on one page.

3. Must have a list of ingredients.
