Course Description

Topics include solving linear, quadratic, rational, absolute value, and radical equations and
inequalities, operations on polynomials including factoring, exponents, rational expressions
and radical expressions, and graphs of linear equations in two variables.


Program Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to:

Apply critical thinking skills through problem solving
Apply arithmetic, algebraic, geometric, and higher-order thinking skills to modeling and
solving real-world situations.

Represent and evaluate basic mathematical information verbally, numerically, graphically,
and symbolically.
Expand mathematical reasoning skills to develop convincing mathematical arguments

Interpret mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables and schematics, and draw
inferences from them.

Develop the view that mathematics is an evolving discipline, interrelated with human
culture, and understand its connections to other disciplines.

The student will be able to:
1. Review of algebraic techniques, order of operations, and properties.

2. Review of algebraic techniques, order of operations, and properties.

3. Review and expand the operations of polynomials.

4. Review and expand the techniques in simplifying rational expressions.

5. Review and expand the operations of expressions in radical or exponential form.

6. Review and expand the techniques in graphing linear equations and inequalities.

This course requires an access code to MyMathLab (publisher software accompanying the
book). How to register, enroll into MyMathLab and other instructions are listed in
Blackboard.
Additional Resources: You may use a SCIENTIFIC calculator (TI30X recommended) for each
test. Even though some have built-in calculators, cell phones and other electronic devices
CANNOT be used during tests and need to be turned off before the test begins. (No TI-89s
or CAS are permitted during testing)

Course Requirements

This course consists of homework assignments in MyMathLab, 10 quizzes in
MyMathLab, and 4 tests in class and a cumulative final exam.

Grades and Grading Scale
Assignment of letter grades is based on a percentage of points earned. The letter grade will
correspond with the following percentages achieved. All course requirements must be
completed before a grade is assigned.

A 100 - 90
B 80 - 89
C 70 - 79
D 60 - 69
F 59 - and below

Course Policies

Specific Course Policies

******ATTENDANCE POLICY:
For each class attended where you arrive on time, work on material through the class period
and dont leave early, you will receive points for participation grade. If you are 10 or more
minutes late or leave 10 or more minutes early, any points for that class.

*** WN - attendance for the first days will be demonstrated by taking the Diagnostic Exam
AND working on the Study Plan. If you do not complete the diagnostic exam and work on your
study plan by the deadline of August 29th, your non-attendance will be reported to the
Registrar and Financial Aide Offices, and you will be removed from this course without a
refund.***

Diagnostic Test and Study Plan
1. The 1033 Diagnostic must be taken after the first class meeting and before the
second class meeting. The study plan needs to be completed or at least worked on
by August 29th or a student will be given WN - dropped from class. The study plan is
extra the student needs to be working on the daily hw assignments to keep up
with the course.
2. Practice problems for the diagnostic can be found in MML under documents.
3. If at least 15 mastery points out of 20 mastery points in the Study Plan is not
completed by the end of August 29th the student will be required to go to the ASC
Lab to work with a tutor until this is complete.
Course policies for Online HW & QUIZ assignments:
1. HW and QUIZ assignments have an unlimited number of attempts and are due on
specific dates at 6am.
2. Quizzes have a 45 minute time limit.
3. HW questions completed after the due dates have a 50% penalty.
4. A QUIZ cannot be taken after the due date; a zero will be given for any QUIZ not
attempted. A student can view the quiz questions following submission.
5. At the end of the term the two lowest HW scores and the two lowest QUIZ scores will be
dropped.

All instructor correspondence must be conducted within your course email in
Blackboard. Please do not use your IRSC e-mail account because it is difficult to identify the
student.

All material, assignments, and deadlines are subject to change with prior notice. It is your
responsibility to stay in touch with your instructor, review the course site regularly, or
communicate with other students, to adjust as needed if assignments or due dates change.

Laptops and tablets
Will not be permitted to be used during class time. They must be turned off and put away.

IRSC Policies

Cell Phone Usage
The use of cell phones is prohibited during class at IRSC. All cell phones must be set on
silent or vibrate during the class period. Any student who uses a cell phone to make or
answer a call, or send and read text messages or emails, other than IRSC emergency
messages during class time, may be asked to leave and may be considered absent for that
class. No student has the right to disturb the teaching and learning process.

Please utilize this wonderful resource to help you to be successful in your courses!! They
are open Monday through Thursday 8 am 8pm, Friday 8 am 2 pm and Saturday 9am - 1
pm.

Course Specific Technology Requirements
All students should have a computer with all plugins required for Blackboard to work. This
is consistent for the MathXL website to work as well.

The instructor views the course syllabus as an educational contract between the instructor
and students. Every effort will be made to avoid changing the course schedule but the
possibility exists that unforeseen events will make syllabus changes necessary. The
instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus as deemed necessary. Students
will be notified in a timely manner of any syllabus changes in the course Announcements or
course e-mail.

Miscellaneous

Cheating: Any form of academic dishonesty will result is a zero for the assignment, and you
may possibly be taken before the Academic Review Board for dismissal from school.

Withdrawals are the responsibility of the student to complete before the withdrawal date
(November 17, 2014).

Instructor withdrawals are only granted under the following conditions:
1. Student submits a written request via Rivermail; and
2. Student is current with all assignments, tests, and attendance; and
3. One of the following:
A) A documented emergency or hardship prevents the student from completing the
course; or
B) The student attends, participates, and completes all assignments except the final
exam, but has no chance of passing the course with a C or higher.
