Fri.4th[March1887]:ItiscoldandwindytodayandIamlonesome.Ican'tgoanywheres[sic]
andnobodycomeshere.EvenWilliamdoesnotappearaslivelyasusual.Iwishsomething
wouldhappennothingbadofcourse.EffieandMarionwas[sic]goingtoNelighthisweekbutI
guessitistoocold.Iwasgoingalongwiththem.

Tue.8th[March1887]:WellIhavebeentoNeligh.Saturday,asIwasscrubbingthefloor[,]
MarionandEffiecametogotoNeligh[]itwasaboutthreeo'clock,butwegottherebyseven.
Wegottiredofridingsolong.Wecrossedthesandhillstheyaredesolatelookingbutthereisa
littlebunchgrassgrowsonthem.WestayedallnightatAlmonBrittell's.

SundaywewenttochurchthatisAddieandIwentwithLambert's.Themusicwassplendid.
Mr.Holmes,BishopoftheBaptistchurchatOakdale,preached.LambertsstayedtoBrittell'sfor
dinnerandthenwewentouttoJohnBrittell'sandatedinnerouttheretoo.Wehadagoodtime.
WecamehomeandGeorge,Frank,AddieBrittell,MarionandIwenttochurch.

Igothomesicktoday.WewentdowntotownandwenttoJohnMarshall'sfordinner.Mrs.
Marshallwassick.ThereisafaithdoctorinNelighandshehadbeenthere.Theymustnottake
medicinewhentheyaredoctoredbyher.Shedoesnothingbutpraytoherself.Itseemsshehas
curedsomefolks.

WewentfromMarshall'stoLambert'sandIstayedthereandEffieandMarionwenttoBert
Brittell'sforsupper.IsawMr.Lambertweavecarpet.ItwasthefirstcarpetloomIeversaw.
MarionandEffiecamebackaftersupperandtherewasamanandwomantherefrom
Massachusetts.

Westartedhomethisevening.IwasgladofitalthoughIenjoyedmyselfupthere.Iwouldhateto
liveintownifIdogetlonesomeinthecountry.WecamebackthroughOakdale.

SundayandIwentuptostaywithMarywhileUelwenttoWheelerCo.Wedidn'tdomuchbut
readanddochores.Marywasanticipatinghighonabureau,sewingmachineandcentertable,
butUeldidn't[get]heranythingbutakickeymoolycow[sic]andMarywasmadthen.

wentovertoUel'sTuesday.IwentovertoMoore'stowaterthecow.Mrs.Moorewas
complainingofnotfeelingwell.WednesdayMr.Moorecameovertogetaloafofbreadandsaid
Mrs.Moorewasrealsick.Effiedone[sic]outherwashingandwentoverthereintheafternoon.

schoolmeetingandwhenhegotbackIcouldhardlysitupsoMr.LarsentookmeovertoEffie's.
Theywereworsescaredthanme.The[y]sentafterPapandMamma.Theypoulticedmyfaceall
nextdayanddone[sic]nogoodsoMarionwentafterthedoctornextday.Hesaidifhehadbeen
adaylaterhewouldhavebeentoolate.HeleftmesomemedicineandsaidifIgotworsebefore
eighto'clocktosendforhim[,]butIgotbetter.HecamenextdaytoseemeIguesshewas
surprised.PapandMr.Houtzwas[sic]thereandtheyliketohavedrovehimwildtryingtotellthe
historyoftheirlivesandhewasinahurry.ButIamonfootagainpryingaroundinmischiefthe
sameasever.

Tues.23[August1887]:Winfield,HuldyandLaurawenttoOakdaletoday.Huldyislookingfor
hermotherfromPawneeCo.anditistimetheywerecoming.Huldyhasn'tsaw[sic]hermother
forsevenyearsOh,won'tshebeglad!
MarionandEffieandIwenttoUel'slastnight.ThebabyisthemostpitifulthingIeversaw.It
suffersagooddeal.

Wed.24[August1887]:Itcommencedtorainthisafternoonandhasdrizzledalltherestofthe
day.Ipiecedonmycrazyquilt.GeorgeKeslingcameoverandtoldusthatUel'sbabywasdead.
Itdiedaboutnineo'clockandwillbeburiedtomorrow.Itsfuneralsermonwillbepreachedatten.
Wm.wentoverandtoldWinfield,MarionandHoutz.

Fri.26[August1887]:Itrainednearlyalldayyesterday,sononeofuscouldgotothefuneral.It
wascloudyandstormyalldaytodaytoo.

Thu.1Sep.[1887]:Wearehavingafinetimetonightandlastnighttoo.Ithasrainedsomuch,
andsohardandlastnightitleakedallover.Ididn'twakeupuntilmybedwasfullofwater.My!
Wm.litthelampandeverynowandthenMammalookedsocomicalIhadtolaughather.We
driedthebedclothestoday.
MarionandUelcamedownaboutdinner.Itcommencedtorainagainjustaftertheystarted
home,andnowtheflooriscoveredwithwaterandthewallswithmud.Wehavegotthebedsin
thedryest[sic]cornerofthebedroom,andthetableundertheridgepole.Ifishedaloafofbread,
adishofbutter,andacrockofmilkoutofthesafeandwearequitehappy,especiallyme,sitting
coiledupinachair.

Mon.12[September1887]:Itrainedagainlastnight,andthistimeitdidn'tspareour"dry
corner."MammaandIgotupanddressedandgotunderthefaithfulridgepole.Iimaginedwe
lookedlikethe"grimstatues"Ihaveheardabout.Itissofunnytogetleakedonfunnyformebut
notfortherestitseemsfortheyareascrossascanbe.Wm.andRoyhavegoneto
