ALGEBRA 1 CLASS CONTRACT

URBAN ASSEMBLY SCHOOL OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

MATTHEW WILLOUGHBY, PRINCIPAL MEREDITH MATSON, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
MS. BENCOSME AND MS. LONG, TEACHERS

Dear Students,

Welcome to Algebra 1! In order to have a successful year together, it is important that we are aware
of our responsibilities, the grading policy, and classroom rules and procedures.

Classroom Goals: All students will earn at least a 75% in the class, and all students will sit for and
pass the Algebra 1 Regents in June.

Classroom Rules:
1. Professionalism: Arrive to class on time in dress code and with note-taking materials (binder,
paper and pen/pencil).
2. Grit: Follow directions the first time they are given, complete all assigned classroom work,
and try your best.
3. Integrity: All work must be your own.
4. Social Responsibility: Do not speak while others are speaking, raise your hand before you
speak, keep the classroom clean and neat, and help your peers.

Grading Policy: Your grade will be based on three components:
Active Learning 40%
Summative Assessments (Tests) 40%
Formative Assessments (Quizzes and Homework) 20%

Grades are posted regularly on Pupilpath. Please feel free to ask us questions about your grade and
for advice on raising it, but dont wait until the end of the marking period!

Active Learning (40%): Part of your grade EVERY DAY is simply about showing up on time,
following the classroom rules, being prepared, and trying your best. There are two components to
this grade:
1. Do Now: You will have 5 minutes EVERY DAY to silently complete the Do Now in your notes.
You will receive one of the following grades:
10: You silently completed the problem(s) within the time limit
8: You did not complete the problem(s) or you were disruptive
6: You were late or there is no work on your sheet failing grade
4: You missed the Do Now or were absent (unexcused) failing grade
2. Class Work and Participation: EVERY DAY you will also receive a grade based on your effort
during instruction, group work, and independent work. You will receive one of the following
grades:
10: You participated at least once, followed all rules, & completed assigned classwork
8: You did not participate or did not complete the assigned classwork
6: You did not work or you were continuously disruptive failing grade
4: You were removed from class or were absent (unexcused) failing grade
*Note: There is extra credit available for students who go above and beyond our expectations (for
example showing and explaining work at the board)*

Summative Assessments (40%): This includes tests and may also include performance tasks.
If you are unhappy with a test grade, you can retake it by completing test corrections.
If you are absent on the day of a test, it is your responsibility to arrange a time to
make it up (before or after school or during lunch). Failure to do so will result in a zero.
If you are not understanding the material, it is your responsibility to schedule an
appointment with us (before or after school or during lunch) to receive extra help.

Formative Assessments (20%): This includes quizzes and homework assignments and may also
include performance tasks.
Quizzes may or may not be announced. If you are absent on the day of a quiz, it is your
responsibility to arrange a time to make it up. Quizzes cannot be retaken.
Every week, you will be given a homework sheet with practice problems for each day of that
week.
You will have the entire week to complete the sheet at your own pace, and then it will be
collected the following week during the Do Now. If you are absent on collection day, the
homework sheet is expected the first day you return back to school.
Extra credit will be offered to students who complete their homework nightly rather waiting
until the end of the week to complete everything. We will check for this during the first five
minutes of the period.
Late homework will not be accepted if it is incomplete or a week after its due date.
Two points will be taken off for every day it is late.
Homework is graded based on effort and completeness.

Group Work Procedures:
Maintain a volume that is appropriate for talking within your group.
Work on problems at your seat with your group mates.
If you have a question, ask everyone in your assigned group. If none of your group members
are able to answer the question, ask one of the teachers. (Ask 3 before me!)
Turn your desk back into proper format after group work is over.

Bathroom and Water Policy:
Every part of class time is essential; therefore you should not be leaving the room unless it is
absolutely necessary.
If you MUST use the bathroom or drink water, it should only be after direct instruction (i.e.
during assigned classwork time) and your active learning grade will drop to a 6 for the day.

Calculator Policy:
All students are expected to purchase a TI 84 or higher graphing calculator for use in class
and at home.
These calculators will be used all 4 years of high school as well as in college and on all state
and national assessments.
While there will be some calculators available for use in the classroom, those will only be
loaned to students who sign the calculator contract which will be explained later.

Teacher Responsibilities: A successful year means the students AND teachers are working hard.
Your teacher agrees to:
Prepare thoughtful daily lessons with the goal of preparing students for the Regents Exam.
Notify parents of students progress.
Assign, grade, and return homework.
Evaluate student progress through periodic assessments (test, quizzes, projects, etc.) and
return feedback to students in a timely manner.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us by sending a message via Pupilpath.
We look forward to working with you this coming semester!

Thank you,

Ms. Bencosme and Ms. Long
