Prlogo
Este curso lo va a poner en contacto con las mil palabras que se utilizan
en ingls en el 90% de los casos ms all de los pronombres y verbos que
se aprenden en un curso inicial de ingls.
Son sustantivos, porque las personas se comunican ponindoles
nombres a las cosas. Vamos a proceder en crculos concntricos.
Ante todo, una descripcin de las palabras con que describimos
nuestro propio cuerpo, desde la cabeza hasta los pies.
Le sigue el tema de los familiares, la casa, el barrio y fnalmente
viajes a otros sitios.
Se han numerado las 1000 palabras esenciales para que usted pueda
escribirlas en un cuaderno o en tarjetas para repasarlas. Sin embargo,
le hacemos las siguientes sugerencias para que pueda dominar estas
palabras de una manera ms efciente.
Una manera de incrementar el vocabulario activo es valindose de
palabras races, o sea, palabras que constituyen una parte de otra
palabra. Hemos identifcado las palabras que forman familias de
palabras con letra negrita y cursiva.
head/cabeza--ahead/en frente, forehead/frente,
headquarters/jefatura.
Afortunadamente, el idioma ingls forma muchsimas palabras
compuestas que nos permiten ampliar nuestro vocabulario si conocemos
la palabra que forma la raz de las dems.
eye/ojo--eyelids/prpados, eyebrows/cejas, eyelashes/pestaas
eyeglasses/gafas, eyesight/vista, eye doctor/oculista
Le recomendamos que en un cuaderno escriba en el centro de una hoja
en blanco cada palabra raz que descubra y que alrededor de ella escriba
toda otra palabra relacionada con la palabra raz que vaya descubriendo.
El cerebro humano funciona a base de las asociaciones que realiza, y
esta manera de relacionar las palabras es mucho ms efcaz que hacer
una lista de palabras. Cada palabra que aprenda se la va a encontrar
ms tarde en el curso. No se supone que con or el curso una vez baste.
Debe de repetirlo dos o tres veces para lograr la mayor efectividad. Es
por este motivo que los vocablos se presentan en temas y en subgrupos
para que usted pueda relacionarlos entre s, y por ende, para que pueda
recordarlos, asimilarlos y usarlos con muchsima mayor efcacia que si
estudiara una lista, glosario, o diccionario.
Le deseamos mucha suerte. Sabemos que su vocabulario activo va a aumentar
signifcativamente cuando fnalice este curso. El curso concluye con un til
apndice donde podr estudiar otros temas interesantes.

La cabeza/The head: Casi todos sabemos que cabeza en ingls se dice
head, pero la cabeza tiene varias partes. Por ejemplo, el pelo, 1. hair, el
cuello, 2. neck, y la nuca, 3. nape. Pero nape se usa poco, lo usual es decir
the back of the neck. Por otro lado, el cuello de una camisa se dice the
shirt collar. 4. Hair es lo mismo para pelo que para cabello. La barba se
dice the 5. beard, a las patillas se les dicen 6. sideburns y al bigote se le
llama 7. moustache. Y head tambin quiere decir bao. Tambin, head
quiere decir encabezar o ser el jefe o cabecilla
de algo. 8. Headlines son los titulares del peridico y to be ahead es
estar adelante en una carrera. 9. Skull quiere decir crneo y los sesos
10. brains as como lo es el cerebro. 11. Adams apple es la nuez de
la garganta. Y la garganta es the 12. throat.
La cara/The 13. face: Y de head viene la palabra 14. forehead, que es la
frente. Las sienes son temples. 15. Eyes son los ojos y 16. eyebrows son las
cejas. 17. Eyelids son los prpados y 18. eyelashes son las pestaas. Tanto
orejas como odos se dicen 19. ears. 20. Ear lobes son los lbulos. Nariz es
21. nose. 22. Nostrils son las fosas nasales, 23.
Nose hairs son los pelos de la nariz. 24. Cheek bones son los pmulos.
25. Cheeks son las mejillas aunque pueden ser las nalgas.
Labios son

hombros. Cuando algo es superior a todo lo dems se dice que It is

Las extremidades/The 60. extremities: 61. Arms son los brazos. Claro est
que arms son las armas tambin y 62. armchair es una butaca. 63.
Armpits son las axilas. 64. Forearm es el antebrazo. Los huesos son the
65. bones. 66. Elbow es el codo. 67. Wrist es la mueca y 68. hand es la
mano. La palma de la mano se dice the 69. palm of the hand, los dedos
de la mano son 70. fngers (los de los pies 71. toes). Las uas de las

138. Sightseeing es dar un paseo, o sea mirar las vistas. La
palabra
139. vista existe en ingls para decir a panoramic vista pero no
para referirse al sentido de la vista. No se usa taste para decirle mucho
gusto a alguien. Se dice It is a pleasure, es un placer. Sin embargo,
existe
la palabra 140. gusto para indicar que algo se hace con brios. He does
his work with gusto. To have the nerve quiere decir atreverse uno a
hacer algo inusitado.

The 217. doctor es el mdico. Existe la palabra medic, pero medic se usa
para indicar un soldado que ha sido entrenado en primeros auxilios.
Hospital se dice 218. hospital. Enfermera es 219. nurse. To nurse quiere
decir cuidar. Cuando se tiene un dolor de espalda, los norteamericanos
acuden a un profesional llamado 220. chiropractor, que NO es un
quiropedista sino una persona que aunque no mdico ajusta los huesos
mediante una serie de movimientos y masajes
teraputicos. A 221. therapist es un teraputa. No existe el
quiropedista en EE.UU., o sea que si un paciente desea cuidar de sus
pies puede acudir a un 222. podiatrist, o podiatra, que es un ortopdico
especializado, a specialized 223. othropedic surgeon. Claro que para
que le recorten las uas de los pies o que le rebajen los callos, llamados
calluses, puede obtener una pedicura, 224. pedicure, en un saln de
belleza, a 225. beauty parlor. Claro que para un dolor de garganta,
a sore throat, o un dolor de odo, an earache o una enfermedad mental,
226. mental illness, habr que ir a un especialista tal como un siquiatra,
a 227. psychiatrist. Si tiene una herida, 228. wound, o una lesin, an
229. injury puede ir a un 230. walk-in clinic, que es una clnica, donde se
puede ir sin cita previa. Existe la palabra 231. lesion, pero se usa para
describir una lesin y no para decir que uno

se ha lesionado. 232. To be hurt o to be injured indica que uno se
ha lesionado. Hurt quiere decir dolor, al igual que 233. pain. To be
wounded quiere decir que uno ha sufrido una herida, a wound.

1. Aunque el signifcado de 234. ill y 235. sick es enfermo no se
puede reemplazar uno por el otro. Ill va siempre detrs de un verbo (to fall
ill, enfermarse). En cambio sick suele ubicarse delante de un sustantivo
(cuidar de un animal enfermo, to look after a sick animal) o con referencia a
ausencias en lugares de trabajo o estudio. Ayer faltaron 7 empleados por
enfermedad; Yesterday there were 7 employees who called in sick.
Cuando se usa sick con los verbos to be o to feel el signifcado pasa a ser
tener ganas de vomitar o sentirse mareado. Tengo ganas de vomitar, I feel
sick. Un uso adicional es seasickness aplicable a aquellos casos de mareo a
bordo de una embarcacin Se sinti mareado durante todo el viaje. He was
seasick during the whole cruise.
2. Wound y to wound se emplean con referencia a heridas
causadas
por armas. Lo hirieron en la Guerra de Irak; He was wounded during the
Irak War. Para casos de accidente se usa injury o to injure. Una piedra
lesion al rbitro. The umpire was injured by a stone.

A billion es equivalente a mil millones. A trillion equivale a un

Como en castellano, la abreviatura de los nmeros ordinales se forma con
el nmero en cifra seguido por las ltimas dos letras de la palabra
completa: 1ro. (primero), 1st. (frst); 2do. (segundo), 2nd. (second); 3ro.
(tercero), 3rd. (third); 20mo. (vigsimo), 20th. (twentieth), etc.
En ingls se usa una coma o un espacio (y NO un punto) para marcar
el millar. Ejemplo: 25 000 o 25,000.
En cuanto a nmeros como 100, 1.000, 1.000.000, etc. se pueden decir
de dos maneras: one hundred o a hundred, one thousand o a
thousand.
No se pluralizan las palabras hundred, thousand o million cuando se
trata de montos, por ejemplo: no decimos US$ 4 millions sino US$ 4
million. En cambio podemos hablar de millions of birds, millions
of children, etc.
0 (cero) se pronuncia zero, o o (u) dependiendo de las expresiones.
Contar de dos en dos se dice count by twos; contar de tres en tres,
count by threes; y as sucesivamente, siempre pluralizando el nmero

El ingls es la lingua franca de
nuestros das ya que se habla no
solamente en pases donde es el
idioma nativo sino tambin es el
medio de comunicacin utilizado
por la mayor parte de los
visitantes en casi cualquier
rincn del mundo. Pensamos
pues, darle las herra-mientas
para que pueda transitar gran
nmero de situaciones, no
importa dnde usted se
encuentre. Por ejemplo, Cmo
comportarse si nos invitan a una
cena familiar? Y cmo
explicarle a la polica que el otro
conductor es el culpable del
accidente que acabamos de
sufrir? Todo esto y mucho ms
puede suceder durante un mes
de estancia en cualquier pas de
nuestro agitado planeta.
En Ingls para viajar por el
mundo, se ofrece en forma
amena el relato de un joven
espaol de viaje. Por medio de
agradables dilo-gos, se
transmiten conocimientos
idiomticos avanzados, haciendo
hincapi en el lenguaje comn,
que es el que se habla a cada
paso. A continuacin de un
corto episodio en espaol--que
presenta una situacin, el lector
encontrar un Vocabulario
Adicional Relacionado con el
tema, en espaol. En la pgina
siguiente, aparece el mismo
episodio en ingls y, debajo, el
vocabulario tmtico. De esta
forma, es posible aprender por
comparacin el vocabulario que
pudiera llegar a utilizarse en
determinada situacin.
Si usted desea profundizar los
conocimientos resulta
recomenda-ble escribir en un
cuaderno aparte las palabras
ms importantes y aprenderlas
de memoria mediante la
prctica escrita y oral, de modo
que queden frmemente
incorporadas a su vocabulario.
As, si llegara a encontrarse en
una situacin semejante, sabr
cmo reaccionar
de manera natural y no tendr
que estar hojeando con
nerviosismo una gua o un
diccionario. Los viajeros
experimentados saben que el
dominio de una lengua facilita
las cosas y permite que se
disfrute plenamente del viaje.
Con qu facilidad se establece
una relacin amistosa cuando
las palabras fuyen!
Nada entorpece ms los
movimientos que estar
pendiente de un diccionario
para cosas tan mnimas como
pedir un vaso de agua
o preguntar cmo se va a un
museo. No todos tienen
paciencia ni tiempo para
esperar a que el visitante logre
articular a duras penas una
oracin. En cualquier pas, todo
marcha mejor si el visitante es
capaz de hacerse comprender, a
pesar de algn que otro error
sin importancia. Por todas
estas razones, recomendamos
el estudio a fondo de cada uno
de los episodios y su
correspondiente vocabulario.
Estamos seguros de que este
aprendizaje contribuir a
hacer mucho ms agradable la
estada en cualquier pas
donde el ingls sea la lengua
franca del comercio y del
turismo.
En este libro aparece el
guin completo de la grabacin
en ingls y adems se le brinda
su equivalente en espaol en
las pginas pares.
Como su intencin es
aprender ingls, debe
concentrarse en el in-gls, pero
de vez en cuando es posible que
desee remitirse al espaol.
Cuando escuche la frase
en ingls, intente imitarla
en voz alta. Los libros de la
serie Auto Ingls le
permiten estudiar en
cualquier sitio, desde un
autobs o tren hasta en su
casa o en su coche sin
necesidad de maestro ni de
lecturas ni escrituras. Este
manual o gua, sin
embargo, lo puede usar en
