Setting up a RIS (Remote Installation Service) server (Windows Server 2003 SP 1)

Step 1& ('#is will ta(e some time so !e patient))
#nstall The os b! booting from the $indows %erver &''( )*+ make sure to have one partition
*or t#e os ,windows &''( server- and one partition to !e used purel" as t#e RIS s#are
.nce the os is full! installed and relavant drivers installed+ )lick on /+dd or remove a role, in the
0anage !our server dialog box.
click /ne-t/ to continue+ ignore an! *1)2 errors for !our network controller as we will be making
this a *1)2 server shortl!...
)hoose /custom con*iguration, and scroll down to the /*omain )ontroller ,3ctive director!-
option
4ou5ll then see the following screen
4ou wil now see an 3ctive *irector! #nstallation $i6ard pop up
)lick next to continue
click ne-t again to continue and select the following configuration
7ext we have to give it a *7% name
Then the .et!ios name
3nd then it5ll prompt for the database and log folders+ go with the defaults as below
#f !ou get a *7% diagnostic 8ailed error simpl! choose to 9#nstall and configure the *7%:

The error you have experienced while using the Active Directory Installation
Wizard does not prevent you from successfully promoting this server to a domain
controller. You may continue to promote this server and then correct its DNS
configuration following promotion.
Set your permissions as above
Then enter a password for restore mode !
Review the actions performed
Click next and it will configure your server
You may be prompted to insert the Windows 2003 Server CD
If you have a network cards installed and setup to receive its IP from another DHCP
server (a router for example) then you may get an error like this
I chose Local area connection, then properties, then TCP/IP properties and manually
added the following:-
0anuall! configure the network cards tcpip properties *or 1/2&10%&3&1
I then clicked on OK *(three times)
If you get a message about it using the localhost ip for DNS then click OK.
At this point the wizard may appear to be hanging, but it isn t, just be patient and wait
until it completes (can take 15 minutes or so)
When it s finished you ll see this
After clicking finish you ll be asked to restart.

)lick next and then continue ,ignore this error if !ou get it-
scroll down to *1)2 server and click next.

7ext we need to configure our scope ,7ew %cope $i6ard-
*on5t bother to add an! exclusions ,;ust click next-
<eave the lease duration as default+ and next select .o$ I will con*igure t#ese options later for
the *1)2 scope options
4ou should now see this

7ow we need to activate the scope+ click on %tart/3ll 2rograms/3dministrative tools/*1)2
rig#t clic( on the highlighted scope and choose activate then
rig#t clic( on the 123P server with the red mark above the scope+ and choose +ut#ori4e
.nce done !ou should now have the 123P server scope activated and the 123P server
aut#ori4ed in active director!. #f the *1)2 server doesn5t appear green hit the =efresh button a
few times.

Step 2&
)lick on /add or remove programs/ in )ontrol panel
chose /3dd/remove $indows )omponents/
%croll down to ,Remote Installation Services,+ place a check mark in the empt! box and click
next to continue. ,$indows will prompt for the %erver )* so make sure it/s in the drive-.
.nce done+ click inis#
and re!oot t#e computer when prompted to do so b! clicking on

Step 3. %tarting the =#% server process.
)lick on the %tart menu and /run/+ t!pe risetup and click ok
point the =#% installation folder to a separate partition from the .%
#nsert the $indows >2 %2& ?<@ cd+ and Tell windows where the >2 cd is goingto be ,in this case
drive 8:-
=eboot the computer
at this point the %erver should now be read! to use a =#% server.
