Objective:
Students will be able to:
• define and identify adjectives.
• identify adjectives in a sentence.
• take pictures of people, place, or things and list adjectives to
describe them.
• use adjectives in their own writing.

NYS Standards:

Standard 2: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary
response and expression.
 observe the conventions of grammar and usage, spelling,
and punctuation.
Be Descriptive!

Let's think of some words we can use to describe the swan.

cute, white, happy, relaxing, big, tired, quiet

Congratulations! We just wrote adjectives.

Adjectives are words that describe a person, place, or a thing.

Remember, adjectives are words we use to describe a person,
place, or thing!

Let's think of some words we can use to describe the sunflower.

The sunflower is...

yellow, big, pretty,


beautiful, bright

Can you think of some more?

Now that we have some adjectives, we can use them in a sentence.

The bright, yellow sunflower swayed in the wind on a warm day.


Bright and yellow describe the sunflower, and warm describes the day.
Time for your assignment!
Get ready to have some fun!!!!
First:  With your assigned group members walk around the
playground and take 4 pictures of people, places, or things.

Next: With a teacher, plug your camera into a laptop and download
the pictures onto your desktop. Open and drag your picture into
Word.

Then: Type as many adjectives as you can for your pictures.


-Think of words that describe how they feel, smell,
taste, or what they look like.

Finally: Use your adjectives to write at least 3 sentences for your


pictures.

 The delicate daisies stood out in a field of green leaves.

The powdery white clouds looked so fluffy as they soared


above the school.
Example

Adjectives:

*pointy
*smooth
*prickly
*sharp
*green

The prickly, green grass tickled my feet.


Example

Adjectives:

*smooth
*shiny
*sun-lit
*green
*fragrant
*silky

The fragrant basil plant felt silky in my hands as I picked it for


mom's roast.
Now what?

Now you know how to use adjectives, so


go back to one of your rough drafts and
add some adjectives to make your writing
"spicy".
