PREFACE

Astrology is a noble science. Some say that it is indeed an art. Some others reject it as they would an idol or an illusion. Some people who have no disappointments or difficulties in their lives say that they have no faith in astrology. I submit that astrology is not only a science, but that it can very accurately guide you in making correct decisions at every level of your life. It can give very precise results, such as a person’s educational path and career in life, the sharpness of his/her mind or the degree of an individual’s brilliancy for example.

Astrology is not fortune telling. It is based on the scientific calculations of the different aspects of planetary constellations at a certain time. People born into this world at any instant have certain characteristics which are related to the positions of the heavenly bodies. These characteristics are different than those people born at other times, according to the planetary positions at their birth. The horoscope is the time chart of the person at the time of birth and from this horoscope, by reverse calculations, one can determine the birth time, birth date and birthplace as well.

However, it should be noted that as soon as a child is born, his environment

begins to modify his character. Mostly, education and upbringing molds the personality of any individual. We all have certain qualities which, according to our environment, develop in a positive or negative manner. Thus, selfishness may emerge as unselfishness, kindness may become cruelty, and a constructive person may, through frustration, become destructive, and so on. The apparent

character depends upon so many

the country, the area, the

surroundings, the family and their customs, the mother and her education, the foods they eat, the teachers and of course, the friends.

The latent characteristics with which we were born can therefore, through environment and good or bad training, become something superficially different, and act in contradiction with the astrological descriptions of the character. The true character will be buried deep beneath these essentially superficial traits.

As of today, the knowledge of astrology is still incomplete. This is due to a misinterpretation of the writings of the ancient sages because of language barriers and the inability to correctly translate the inner essence of these teachings. Most of these works have been lost through the course of time. The translations of the verses, interpreted by individuals, may not be correct or may be colored by personal opinions. Major untranslated portions are either unavailable or known to certain people and yet have remained hidden. Therefore the present concept of this science contains only a certain portion of it. The same case applies with the Ashtakavarga system. The major portion of it is lost, and

3

therefore not available. That is the reason why this very important system is not followed. The Upachayas are referred to in all the textbooks, but its use in finding the results of timed events is not described anywhere. The Ashtakavarga system is a very precise and systematical way of finding the true strengths of the planets.

Not only can this system give the strengths of the planets for each and every house, it can also give the shares of the planets, as well as the results of all the houses.

All planets aspect the 7th house from themselves, always. The lords of opposite signs are always enemies. Similarly, the opposite house denotes opposite functions. It is easy to note that the seventh sight is always on either the enemies’ house or on its opposite criteria house. The planet in its Uccha sign (exaltation) looks on its neecha sign (debilitation) or vice versa. It should also be noted that in the horoscope, opposite signs have opposite meanings. Consider the 3rd and 9th house for instance. One stands for Initiative and using one’s own efforts to acquire things. The other stands for luck and good fortune. These are opposing factors. Where some people receive many things through sheer luck without expending any effort or struggle to acquire them, others have to struggle long and hard to get anything at all. The Fourth house gives family happiness and its opposite sign, the tenth house, represents Power and authority. Family

versus

to assign quality time for his family thus imposing a certain type of conflict. Such is the case with the remaining houses. So, if a planet is in an exalted position in a house, how can it give the same or good results for its opposite sign? Surely it will spoil the results of its opposite sign. Hence it should be noted that any planet that is situated in any particular house will give the opposite results of equal strength but in a negative direction. The strength of the planets should be considered only by the amount of benefic points the planet receives in any particular house. The exaltation or debilitation of the planet according to sign, will definitely increase or reduce the overall result, but this will be based only on the benefic points that any planet gets in any particular house.

.If one has power, fame or authority, it becomes difficult for him

While learning this great science from my guru, the late Shri BrijGopal Shastri of Amravati (vidharbha), I came across some handwritten books in his possession on Ashtakavarga. He had explained to me the meaning of so many verses written in that book. Those verses were not available in any of the current books. Meanings of some of those verses have been noted down in my diary. In 1966, I had moved to Satara. There after I had no contact with my guru. While doing detailed study on the subject, I had found that those verses were very important, and had be studied in detail. After a long time, I returned to my native place, and came to know that my guru had passed on and all his hand written material on this subject was no longer available through his heirs. My guru had married very late in life. When he passed on, his children were much too small to understand the science. All his treasures of books were of no use to his heirs, so

4

they discarded all of it, and sold it as raddi to kabadi. I was very disappointed and tried to recollect his teachings from my notes. The write-up available with me although not adequate, was sufficiently enough however to study and apply in a brand new direction.

There are 150 nadis in every sign. The duration of each nadi is in the range from 8 to 115 seconds. The nadis of twins will be different, and so will be their fate. But unfortunately details about this are not known. Actually the nadi is nothing but the shodasavarga (16th harmonic chart). If we cast all the shodasavarga charts, definitely there will be a change in some of them after a time lapse of even 8 seconds. That is the main reason why the fate of twins is not necessarily the same.

The Ashtakavarga system is based on the relative positions of the planets. The benefic or malefic places are determined with respect to the other planets. Therefore this system can be employed for all the 16 divisional charts. Hence only this and this system can give much better results then any other system.

I have been a student of astrology from 1961 for nearly 38 years and have experimented in my own way with various methods of interpretations of horoscopes mainly derived from ancient classical sources. The Ashtakavarga System, on which I have received notes, has engaged my attention for a long time now. It occupies an important place in the general scheme of Hindu astrology and offers considerable scope for further research, especially in the matter of timing events. A large number of horoscopes have been studied in the light of Ashtakavarga and a few important discoveries have been made. My specialty lies in finding the period for marriage and timing events. With the help of this Ashtakavarga system and with some research experience in the field, I have full faith in the accuracy of this system.

The Ashtakavarga method of prediction has been quite popular with the rank and file of Hindu Astrology. But as usual, the method is so indiscriminately employed that its practical utility is often lost sight of. Under some wrong impression, it was known only as a system for finding out the longevity. It was discarded for some other reasons also. The main reason is the complicated method used for casting the Ashtakavarga of the planets manually. It was a time consuming job, requiring much concentration. But now with the help of computers it is a very easy job. I have also developed an "Ashtakavarga Chakra” which can give the Ashtakavarga and Sarvashtakavarga within a few seconds. With the help of this ‘chakra’, people who don’t have a computer can also cast the Ashtakavarga tables very easily.

The particular Ashtakavarga system that was taught to me by my guru, when used in the interpretation of a horoscope, can give very accurate results. I have found this system to be highly useful in making predictions and it is very reliable. Of course, it requires a thorough knowledge of the various principles and rules of astrology, as well as a capacity for interpretative skills.

5

While studying various horoscopes, I’ve found vast differences between textbook law and the actual results that come to pass. For instance, as per the text of Hindu astrology, the marriage of an individual is performed when Guru (Jupiter) transits particular houses or makes aspects to the seventh house from itself (i.e. its transit through lagna, third house, seventh, eleventh etc.). So many times, it does not coincide with the fact, although it may do so accidentally. It is also said that when the marriage is related to the seventh house, it is partly true. But it is not always performed in the dasha or antardasha of the lord of seventh house.

Jupiter is said to be a very benefic planet. Its aspect on any house enhances the good results. Some say the presence of Jupiter in any house takes away from the results of that particular house. Saturn and Mars are malefic planets and mainly their presence spoils the results of that house. I always observe the discrepancies in such rules. Mostly the results experienced by the person were quite opposite the results given in the textbooks. I have discussed this topic as well with the most renowned personalities on the subject. But unfortunately no one was able to answer exactly to the point. Moreover there was not a single system that was able to consistently give the timing event. The same is the case with the dasha system. There are so many various types of dashas, yet there is no clear understanding given in any text as to which one is correct, or when to follow which dasha system. As per my experience, the Vimshottari dasha system is correct, and gives very satisfactory results.

The Ayanamsha factor is also a very important matter in calculating the dasha and the correct value of the ayanamsha can give the correct result for the Vimshottari dasha.

In general, it is said that there is a direct relationship between the lord of the house and the dasha or the antardasha lord for considering the timing of an event for the outcome connected to any house. But such a relationship is not experienced. There is no perfect rule which can give the correct timing for an event regarding any house. The dasha system does not always match up with the houses (for which they represent) nor its lord. As a result, many other dasha systems have been introduced by various research scholars.

In the Ashtakavarga system the powers of the planets are mainly determined by the relative positions of the planets. This power is greater than the power of the planet by itself in any particular sign or house, thus giving results that are more closely aligned to the facts.

All the planets, except for the Sun and the Moon, have dual lordships. Mars is the lord of Aries and Scorpio. Venus is that of Taurus and Libra. Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius. There are so many results related to the lordship of the planets, especially the lordship of the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses. If the lord of any sign or

6

house is situated in either the 6th, 8th, or 12th, then the result of that house is considered to be spoiled. Though this statement may be correct to some extent, it is not perfect. Regarding the lordship of the sixth house, it is very confusing, because except for the Sun and Moon, all other planets have dual lordship. For a Cancer ascendant, Jupiter is the lord of the sixth and the ninth house. Confusion arises when we have to consider which lord to take into consideration. If it is situated in seventh house, then what will be the effect? Should it be treated as a ninth lord or a sixth lord? When testing the experiences of many people, the results, when applied strictly by the book were vastly different than expected. The planet that is said to be debilitated due to its position in its neecha rashi, or in the house of its debilitation, is experienced as giving good results. Similarly, the planet said to be exalted by sign, was found giving the worst result. This same concept can be stated in a more precise terms in this Ashtakavarga system. The planet should be said to be debilitated when it gets less than 3 points in its Ashtakavarga. The planet that gets more than 4 points should be said to be exalted. The planet that gets 4 points is said to be neutral. It is immaterial which sign it is in. The actual results coincide with the results given in the text when they are judged to be exalted or debilitated only on the Ashtakavarga power. It should also be noted that only the planet alone by its rulership or its placement in any particular house is not sufficient. There are some other houses, which are equally responsible for the results of a particular house. In the textbooks, the first house is said to deal with beginning of the life, health, means of earning (by own effort or by serving others) personality, character and childhood. In general the results related to the first house are judged by its lord, the placement of its lord, the planets situated in first house, planets aspecting the first house, or planets aspecting the lord of first house or situated with it. By applying only these concepts, perfect results will still not be ascertained. Sometimes the answer cannot be found in texts. The same applies here to other houses.

The Ayanamsha is an important factor. The sayan (tropical) longitude of the planet less the Ayanamsha is the nirayana (sidereal) longitude of the planets. There is no reliable and perfect value of the ayanamsha. The nirayana Longitude of the planets is based only on the ayanamsha, while the Vimshottari dasha is based on the nirayana longitude of the Moon. The Mahadasha (main period) of Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury or Venus is longer, so a difference of even one degree in the ayanamsha can make a difference in the Mahadasha by one and a half years or so, which changes everything. Suppose we are calculating the timing of an event for a marriage. If we find the significator that can indicate marriage in any particular case, but the Antardasha of such a planet differs by one year or so, then the outcome will not be correct. Hence, the Ayanamsha is a very important factor in timing the event. I prefer to use my own customized ayanamsha which is shorter than the Lahiri by 54 minutes and gives me the most accurate results. In some cases the answer only differs by approximately 18 days.

LESSON 36

Jupiter Delay Scenarios

Under what Conditions Will Jupiter cause a Delay?

Jupiter is normally a benefic planet and when its natal bindu points are less than 4, it can never aspect malefically. Therefore, when its bindus are low, it will not contribute in any manner to a Jupiter delay. So always look first to see what Jupiter’s natal bindu points are before checking further into a Jupiter delay.

However, even Jupiter can aspect malefically, when its natal bindu score totals more than 4 points. This is when we start to look for a possible Jupiter delay.

When this happens, Jupiter can cause a delay if it aspects Houses A and B, OR the lords of A and B or combinations of both, in the natal and/or the navamsa charts. With a Jupiter delay however, unlike a Saturn delay, House C is not required.

Overview of Scenario cases:

In the following cases below, we will present illustrative scenarios in both Southern and Northern formats to show you how Jupiter can cause a delay.

NOTE:

For all scenarios, House B will be used as the 7 th house focus here and House A will be the 2 nd house focus to keep things constant. This can be applied to any of the 12 houses however.

Also when considering malefic aspects of Jupiter, we ONLY consider the 5, 7 and 9 aspects, never the conjunction. Therefore, if Jupiter aspects one house or lord and conjoins another house or lord it does NOT cause a delay.

SCENARIO 1-Southern Chart

(Fig.1)

In Scenario #1 (Fig 1 and 1A), Taurus is the lagna. With the 7 th house focus being “B”.

the 2 nd house becomes “A”. Jupiter is in the 10 th house with more than 4 bindus,

which means it will aspect malefically on House A. At the same time, the lord of House

B is Mars, which is also being aspected by Jupiter in its navamsa. Therefore we have

a FULL DELAY.

Although Jupiter does not aspect either planet in the natal, it DOES aspect both of them from its navamsa, so therefore we have a FULL DELAY.

Scenario #5 (Fig 5), illustrates a special case which states that if Jupiter OWNS the 2 nd or the 7 th house OR the Lord of A and B, then it must be malefic for the house it owns, which means that Jupiter must receive LESS than 4 bindus in the SAV for that house in order to cause a FULL DELAY.

In the Scenario #5 example, Jupiter aspects House A malefically, because it has more than 4 bindus and at the same time is the OWNER of House B, which in order to cause a FULL DELAY, must have LESS than 4 bindus for Jupiter in that house.

If Jupiter owns the 2 nd house and is in the lagna with more than 3 bindus and if in its SAV, it has 4 bindus for Jupiter in the 2 nd house, it will only cause a FULL DELAY if Jupiter also aspects the 7 th lord, the 7 th house and each and every one of its Samdhmarmis.

LESSON 1

WHAT IS THE ASHTAKAVARGA SYSTEM?

This system is devised as a numerical scheme of interpretation that lets us easily see a snapshot assessment of the strength of a house thru a unique point system.

The Ashtakavarga system is a method of calculating the powers of the planets relative to each other. Therefore, it can be used in any chart i.e. all the divisional charts, along with Chaleta Bhava charts (diurnal charts) and even with Horary Astrology. This system also gives the power of each planet for all twelve houses. For each and every house, all seven planets contribute their power or strength in terms of numerical value. This makes it easy to compare the powers of the planets for each house. There is no other system which can give such a clear cut view of the comparative strengths of all the planets

By employing the Ashtakavarga system along with other principals, the following things can be determined with great accuracy :

1) Predicting the general strengths of the planets and the houses 2) Anticipating certain important events in a personís life 3) Forecasting dasha results 4) Overall life readings 5) Profession of the person 6) Timing events for important results 7) Day to day power of the horoscope and results 8) Marking the evolution of the achievements in the life. 9) Prasna Charts 10) Political and Social forecasting 11) Transit results

The powers of the planets depends on its relative position versus other planets. This can be judged at a glance the Ashtakavarga chart. Making a judgment of the planet only by its sign or placement in a particular house without considering the planetís power with respect to other planets doesnít give an accurate assessment of the overall picture.

In the Ashtakavarga system, the Ashtakavarga charts are cast using the natal chart and the benefic points. The individual Ashtakavarga chart is also known as the Bhinnashtakavarga. The combined effect given in one chart is known as the total Ashtakavarga chart or the Sarvashtakavarga chart. The individual chart and the sarvashtakavarga charts are both required for calculation purposes. Some also include the Ashtakavarga of

8

the Lagna, Rahu and Ketu, but as per my experience I donít recommend this. The outer planets like Uranus, Neptune, Pluto are not taken into consideration either. Some people cast the malefic Ashtakavarga charts or the Rekha ashtakavarga chart, which is really nothing more than the repeated work. The total of benefic and malefic points in a house, for a planet is eight. If the benefic points are known, then automatically we know the malefic points. Eight minus the benefic points gives the malefic points. The total benefic and malefic points in a house in sarvashtakavarga always comes to 56. There are seven planets and each contributes eight points, so 7 X 8 = 56. Hence, if we know the benefic points, obviously malefic points are also known. (56 less the benefic points = the malefic points). For example, if a house contributes 28 benefic points, it means it still has 28 malefic points remaining. Therefore the result of that house will be normal. The house that gets less than 28 benefic points will give less of a result as indicated by that house. Similarly if any house contributes more than 28 points then the results denoted by that house will be enhanced. The grand total of all the benefic points distributed by the seven planets and the lagna always total 337. The contribution of each planet is given in the Ashtakavarga chart of that planet, as given below.

The total individual contribution of benefic points by any planet in any horoscope will be the same as mentioned above. The sum total of all the benefic points for all the planets will always be 337 for any horoscope. These figures do not change. These are benefic points. There are seven planets plus the Lagna that contributes to these 8 different reference points, and there are twelve houses, hence the total points should be 12 X 8 = 96, for each planet. These 96 points may be benefic or malefic. The fact that Jupiter contributes a huge 56 benefic points out of 96 points, means that 96 - 56 = 40 malefic points. That is the reason why Jupiter is called the great benefic. Similarly, Mercury contributes 54 points, Venus contributes 52 points, and so forth.

Mars and Saturn however, give only 39 benefic points each, which means 96-39 = 57 malefic points. Since the malefic points outnumber the benefic points they are called malefic planets. From the above, it can be observed that each and every planet gives both malefic and benefic results. Because Jupiter, for example, gives the maximum amount of benefic points, it is called a benefic planet, while Saturn and Mars give more malefic points and are therefore called malefic planets.

The above shows a basic ashtakavarga table before all the points are filled in. The top row represents the houses in the chart. In order to avoid confusion as to whether the top row is the house or the numbered sign, I will add the names of the signs underneath the houses. In this table, the signs represent a chart with an ARIES lagna, but they will always rotate under the stationery house signs in the top row, so that the proper lagna sign for the chart will always go under the 1 st house column. If for example, AQUARIUS was the ascendant for the chart, then the order of the planets starting under the 1 st house house would be Aq, Pi, Ar, Ta, Ge,

Ca, Le, Vi, Li, Sc, Sg, Ca. The side row lists the 7 planets. Each row will represent the individual planetsí point distribution throughout the houses in a numerical value from 0-8, zero being the weakest and 8 being the most powerful. At the bottom is a row for the totals of all the points accumulated for each column. The last column totals up the points in each row of planets. The accumulated totals for both rows and the columns will always be 337.

Here we can see that all the planets contribute various points to each house. Remember that minimum points can go as low as zero and the maximum can go as high as 8. No planet can have more than 8 points to a house.

The numbers highlighted in red indicate the planetary positions in the chart for that row as indicated by the planet to the left. For example, we can easily see that the SUN is located in the 12 th house and contributes 5 points to this house. The MOON is located in the 7 th house and contributes 5 points also to that house and so forth.

LESSON 2

Benefic and Malefic Planets

EXALTED OR DEBILITATED PLANETS:

While studying the Ashtakavarga system, I came across some Sanskrit slokas in

a old hand written book from the collections of my guru and some other books by

Acharya Satyanath, Acharya Vaidyanath, Acharya Utpal etc., which clarify certain rules. I will translate a few of these Slokas in English.

Sloka 1

svochchmitradivargasha: kendradibalsnayuta | Anistha phalda: sarve swalpbinduyuta yadi || (ja shi 10)

MEANING: If any planet is in its exalted sign, or in its own house, or in the house of friends, or is in a square or trine (sthanbali) aspect and it has 3 or less points

in its Ashtakavarga, it gives only malefic results. This goes for all the planets. There is no difference made as to whether they are malefic or benefic planets. Jupiter in Cancer is in its exalted sign. When Jupiter is in Sagittarius and Pisces,

it is in its own sign. Therefore, if Jupiter is located in any of these signs, it is said to be powerful. But, if the same Jupiter is in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces and has 3 or less points in its Ashtakavarga (Bhinnashtakavarga), then it will not be possible for Jupiter to give auspicious results due to its beneficial sign placement.

It is clear from this that the strength of the planet cannot be judged just from the

sign it is situated in. If the planets are debilitated in the Ashtakavarga, i.e. having 3 or less benefic points for the place it is situated, even if it is in its exalted sign, it is not possible for the planet to give better results.

The following sloka will clarify the meaning even more:

Sloka 2

Dushtastansthita yech yech nicharimanshga | te sarve shubhada nityamadhibinduyuta yadi ||

(ja shi 11)

MEANING: If any planet that is in its debilitated sign, in its fallen sign, or in the house of its enemy still has more than 4 points in its Ashtakavarga, it will give

From these two Slokas, it is clear that the planet will give

only benefic results.

14

the result according to the points it gets in its Ashtakavarga. The result is not dependent on the sign or the place it is situated. More Slokas can be referred to clarify this rule:

Sloka 3

Ye chavsanaripu randhraturanbhaga | Ye nichapapripu khecharvargaykta : || Ye mandi rashipatinna sah bandhavashch | Te sarvamukhaphaldastvabindukashchen ||

(ja shi 55)

MEANING: Planets with 3 or less bindus or points in their own Ashtakavarga, although situated in their exalted sign, or a friend's rashi (to fortify), or in a trikona (trine) or in a kendra (angle), or even in upchaya houses, will give malefic results.

Sloka 4

Arohbiyradhikbhavtulya | bindadhika: karma bhovodayastha: || tungadi vargopagata namoga:| shadviryavantashcha shubhprada:sthu||

MEANING: Planets with more bindus in their Ashtakavarga, even if situated in their fallen sign, or in the sign of their enemy, or in the dusthana houses (6, 8 or 12), will give only benefic results. It means that the benefic or malefic results of the planets are not dependent on their situation in any particular rashi, but rather through the bindus it acquires in its Ashtakavarga placement. If we try to test every law written in the ancient books with Ashtakavarga, we would be definitely astonished to note the accuracy with which the Ashtakavarga can provide results. Without using this system as an important tool for prediction, we deprive ourselves of a very important foundation for the chart. In the classics, it is also mentioned that an exalted planet means that it has more than 4 points in the sign where it is situated and is debilitated when it has less then 4 points.

HENCE WE COME TO A VERY IMPORTANT RULE:

A planet is said to be exalted or debilitated only on the benefic points it gets in its Ashtakavarga. It has nothing to do with the sign in which it is situated.

IMPORTANT RESULT:

The planets that get more then 4 points are called benefic planets. Similarly planets that get less then 4 points are called malefic planets, and the planets that get 4 points are known as neutral planets.

15

The Late Shri K.S. Krishanamurti, founder of K.P. Paddhat, also agrees that the planets do not give the results as per their natural natures. In reference to Jupiter, he states that it has lost its benefic power in the era of Kalyuga and that he has experienced the malefic effects of Jupiter firsthand. But in spite of Kalyuga, I tend to disagree. It is the effect of the points that it receives in its own place that truly makes the difference. An aspect of Jupiter with more points is always malefic. The same rule applies to all planets. With reference to Saturn, Krishnamurti says it gives malefic effects based on the constellation in which it resides. Perhaps, if he would have come across the Ashtakavarga system first, his whole theory would have been quite different.

LESSON 3

Planetary Aspects

All planets aspect the 7th house from themselves.

Saturn aspects the 3 rd , 7 th , and 10 th house from itself.

Mars aspects the 4 th , 7 th and 8 th house from itself.

Jupiter aspects the 5 th , 7 th and 9 th house from itself.

It can also be noted that the lords of opposite houses are enemies of each other. The seventh sign from the uccha (exalted sign) rashi is the neecha (debilitation) rashi of the same planets. For example Cancer is the uccha rashi for Jupiter, and its opposite sign of Capricorn, is the neecha rashi for Jupiter. Similar is the case for other planets. The debilitated sign is always the opposite sign of the exalted sign. Similarly, the rulers of opposite signs are enemies of each other, or at least, they are not friends of each other.

Here is one question that arises: How can a benefic planet aspect its enemyís house or its neecha rashi by benefic sight?

Certainly it will not as it can only malefically aspect its enemyís sign. If any planet is in its exalted sign, such as Jupiter in Cancer, its aspect will be on Capricorn, which is its neecha rashi.

As per the write up in the old hand written book, it was clearly mentioned that a planet with more than 4 benefic points will aspect in the same strength, but in a malefic manner. Similarly any planet with less then 4 benefic points, will aspect in a benefic manner, equal to 8 minus the points of the planet. In other words, if any planet has only 2 benefic points then its aspect will be benefic by 8-2 = 6 points. The following table gives the values of the planetary aspects.

As you can see in the chart above, the maximum amount of points that any house can receive in the Bhinnashtakavarga chart is 8. By subtracting the benefic points from the maximum allowance of 8, we can easily see the balance of malefic points. If the malefic point balance is more than the benefic point balance, the malefics are the dominating factor for the house. If the benefics outnumber the malefic balance, then the benefic factor dominates the house. Planets having more than 4 points, aspect malefically and planets with less than 4 points, aspect benefically. (In Western astrology, similar results are indicated) In Hindu astrology opposite house rulers are enemies of each other.

If a malefic planet is situated in any particular house, then the results pertaining to that house are said to be spoiled. In fact every house is said to represent more then one event in the life. For example, the fifth house represents education, children, intelligence, emotions, fame and house of crown etc. The presence of any malefic planet in the fifth house should spoil all the above results. But it is not so in every case. Suppose a chart has Cancer as a lagna, and Saturn is situated in the fifth house of Scorpio. Saturn, being a malefic, should give ill results for the things represented by the fifth house. At the same time, Saturn will be aspecting the seventh, the eleventh, and the second house, so it should also spoil the results concerned with all these houses. But it is not experienced in even 1% of the cases. The result is quite different than this.

Generally, it is said that the aspect of a benefic planet is good and that of a malefic planet is bad. But in my studies I have found the reverse to be true, that the aspects of benefic planets are always malefic and the aspects of malefic planets are always found to be benefic. Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Moon are naturally benefic planets. Saturn and Mars are natural malefic planets. As per the Ashtakavarga theory, the benefic planet is the one that gets more then 4 points in its Ashtakavarga and the malefic planet is the planet that gets less then 4 points, while the planet which gets exactly 4 points is said to be neutral.

After long observation and experimentation, I came to the conclusion that a planet gives the opposite results for its aspect. This means that a planet getting more than four points or bindus, afflicts the house it aspects with negative strength equal to the points it is having. This also proves correct for other aspects of Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. Saturn or Mars, if they are in the house where in their respective Ashtakavargas, they get less then 4 bindus, they give beneficial results for the house they aspect. The total benefic and malefic points a planet gets for any house are eight. This means if a planet gets 3 benefic points for any particular house then definitely it will get 5 malefic points for the same house. Similarly if a planet gets five benefic points in a house where it is, then it will get three malefic points for the same house. Thus the total benefic and malefic points are eight. This is a special effect we get in the Ashtakavarga system. We get the actual result in numerical value for the benefic or malefic effect. Following table will show the actual benefic or malefic bindus (points):

Although if Jupiter, which is said to be most benefic planet, gets less then 4 points i.e. 3, 2, 1, or 0, then definitely it is going to give malefic results for the house. For the same reason some astrologers believe that Jupiter spoils the result of the place where it is situated, which is 50 percent true.

Now as I have mentioned earlier, a planet will give opposite results for its aspected places. A planet with five benefic points will give the aspect effect of five malefic points and vice versa. It should be made clear that even if Jupiter acquires six benefic points in its Ashtakavarga in its place, then for the places it is aspecting, i.e. 5th, 7th, and 9th places from itself, it will send malefic results of

19

six Rekhas (negative points). Obviously, Jupiter will give benefic results for itself in the place where it resides.

The same thing applies to Mars and Saturn as they can both give beneficial results for the house they are situated in if they have more points in any place. At the same time they will spoil the results of the places they aspect (due to the opposite aspect effect).

It is a general notation that the benefic points are denoted by bindus (points) and malefic points are indicated by Rekhas (dashes). From the illustrated tables, it should be clear that every planet contributes both good and bad results for the same house. Only when its benefic points are more, then the planet is said to be benefic. This law is applicable to all the planets including Saturn and Mars (which are naturally malefic).

20

LESSON 4

Meanings of the Houses

All the different areas of life are distributed among the 12 houses and each house influences certain matters. In order to denote which area of the life is being focused on, we look to these houses for their particular significations as follows:

First house: (Lagna) – Adya, Kalpa, Janma (birth), physical body, physical features, living or livelihood, character, personality, individuality, temperament, color, general constitution, health, vitality, vigor, tendencies, struggle for life, success/ failures, fortune/misfortune, honor, dignity, well being, head and upper part of the body, gain and profit of younger brother, patrimony of mother, higher studies, heirs, death, income, overall happiness, self respect, ego, purchase of house, land, property, vehicles.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord of the first house or the planets situated in the Lagna with more then 4 points, the results will be linked to fourth and eighth house matters. Students are requested to check out this statement as well as any further statements given below in red italic letters. This thought may be new for most of us. Check this with the known results of a chart familiar to you.)

Second house: Wealth, food, right eye, face, speech, family, relatives, auspicious matters, property, money and money matters, bonds and securities belonging to native, bank balances, grandfather, grand mother, wife, children, ability to express the thoughts, marriage, description of the partner, memory, imaginations, acquisition of a house, vehicles, foreign relations, short trips, authority, success of the children, childbirth.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord of the second house or the planets situated in the second house with more then 4 points, the results will be linked to fifth and/or ninth house matters)

Third house: Courage, ear/hearing, firmness, heroism, mother (NOTE:

In standard Vedic, the mother is represented by the 4 th house while in this system, the mother is represented by the 3 rd house.), brothers and sisters, bad thoughts, mental strength, mental inclinations (for study), assistance from others, acquisition of bank loans, correspondence,

means of communications, religion, acquisition of authority, start of a new adventure, short trips, writing books, publications, change in residence, contracts, agreements, success in selection in an interview/ election.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord of the third house, or the planets situated in the third house with more than 4 points, the results will be linked to sixth and/or tenth house matters.)

Fourth house: House, home, residence, land, relations, vehicle, happiness, water, learning, Dara (wife), marriage, acquisition of loan, garden, crops, agriculture, Vedic and secret text etc. ( NOTE: In standard Vedic, the mother is represented by the 4 th house. In this

system, the mother is represented by the 3

house.)

(Note: In the sub period of the lord or the planets situated in the fourth house with more then 4 points, the results will be linked to seventh and/ or eleventh house matters.)

Fifth house: House of crown, tax, intellect, children, belly, Vedic Knowledge, traditional laws, previous deeds, partnership, diseases, Long journey, etc.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord or the planets situated in the fifth house with more than 4 points, the results will be linked up to eighth and/or twelfth house matters.

Sixth house: Debt, arms, wounds, disease, enemies, assistants, jealousy, fear, danger, loans, status in society, sickness, health, earnings by underhanded dealings, luck factor, short journeys, court matters, advocates, disputes, work and service, employees, subordinates, servants, faithfulness of the subordinates, pet animals, tenants, sanitation, herbs. It is an important house to find out about earnings, competition etc.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord of the sixth house or the planets situated in the sixth house with more than 4 points, the results will be linked up to the ninth, and/or lagna house matters.)

Seventh house: Desire, life partner (husband or wife), business partner,

love, passion, house of union, daily routine work, fixed assets, Acquisition of authority, increments, higher post, etc, accidents (NOTE:

Tenth house: Livelihood, authority, honor, work, commerce, trade, business, success, position, command, quality, children, status. It is also known as the apex of the horoscope, respect, ambition, etc.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord of the tenth house or the planets situated in the tenth with more then 4 points, the results will be linked up to lagna and/ or fifth house matters.)

Eleventh house: Profit, gain, income, desire, wealth, acquisition, fulfillment of desire, trusts, profit and pleasure, wishes, etc.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord of the eleventh house or the planets situated in the eleventh with more then 4 points, the results will be linked up to second and/ or sixth house matters.)

Twelfth house: Bondage, loss, bed comforts, Moksha, long journeys, foreign relations, expenditures, divine worship, loss, misery etc.

(Note: In the sub period of the lord of the twelfth house or the planets situated in the twelfth with more then 4 points, the results will be linked up to third and/ or seventh house matters.)

On the next page is a Summary Table that easily illustrates these notes. If, for example, a person has an AQUARIUS ascendant and is going through a MARS – SATURN dasa, the subperiod lord of the Lagna,

SATURN, would now be linked up to the 4

this time period, events revolving around either/ both of these house matters will be in play. This is also true for any planets residing in the Lagna that have more than 4 bindus or points in their individual bhinnashtakavargas. They will also be linked up to these houses as well.

General concepts:

The results of any house are dependent upon the correct interpretations of the following things:

1. The strengths, aspects, conjunctions and placements of the lord of the

house.

2. The natural qualities of the house, its lord, the planets situated in it,

and the aspects on the house.

3. The strength of the house itself.

4. Yogas influencing the house, its lord etc.

24

5. Exaltations or debilitations of the lord.

6. Conditions of the lord (whether favourable or adverse).

7. Condition of the aspected house lord under consideration.

8. Same thing applies in the Navamsa chart.

9. The age, position, status and sex of the person.

All of the above points are required to be properly weighed before any results can be concluded. The results are generally predicted on the above basis only.

Now the question arises as to how accurate of a result do we get from the above concepts? Much depends of course on the accuracy of the interpretive skills of the astrologer. It is always easy to look back in hindsight and find the answer after the fact, but in order to be able to accurately predict an event or give the probable dates for an event, applying these same laws with skill and precision takes much practice.

It is said that the result of a timed event is experienced in either the major, the sub period or the sub-sub period of the:

a) Lord of the house

b) Planets aspecting the house

c) Planets posited in the house

d) Planets aspecting the lord of the house

e) Planets in association with the lord of the house.

All of the above statements do not prove to be correct in any case other than at random. Hardly a single event of the life can be predicted when using the above method. These laws cannot be proven universally in all cases.

In the following chapter, we will discuss how to use the Upachaya method in order to show its importance in correctly assessing the timing of different events and how all these houses interact with each other to enable us to arrive at a valid and intelligent conclusion.

25

LESSON 5

THE UPACHAYA HOUSES

The timing event of any result is very important. For example, letís consider the case of marriage. The life partner is usually determined from the seventh house. But in research work done on at least 100 charts, it was found that in a maximum of up to 40 % of the cases, the marriages were performed in the antardasha of the lord of the fourth or the twelfth house, even if there was no involvement with the seventh house or its lord at all. There was no direct relation of these houses with the seventh house. The twelfth house is the sixth from the seventh house, and the fourth house is the tenth house from the seventh. In 15% of the cases, the marriages were performed in the antardasha of the planets situated in the fourth and twelfth house with 4 or more benefic points from the bhinnashtakavarga of that planet.

In the same case studies, the marriages of 55 % of the people having an Aries lagna were performed in the antardasha of the Moon or Jupiter (The Moon is the fourth lord and Jupiter is the ninth and the twelfth lord). The Mahadasa Lord seemed to be the least factor concerned in the timing of the event. The different signs in which these two planets were located, were also not very effective accept in some special cases. Below is a table showing the different lagnas and significators:

Out of these twelve lagnas, only in four cases did the marriage significators have lordship of the seventh house, which could be nothing more than a coincidence. These significators are highlighted in RED in the table and have dual lordship as

26

you can see from the 2nd column in red. The also have lordship of one of the houses, either the fourth or the twelfth, along with seventh house. It is clear from the above statement that the seventh house or its lord has a lesser role in the marriage time than the other significators.

I came upon the following Slokas -

Sloka 5:

MEANING: Any planet receiving more bindus in the 1st, 6th and 10th houses in its Ashtakavarga will give benefic results as related to first house matters in its antardasa. This formula can be applied to all other houses, using each one as the first house starting point and studying the 1st, 6th and 10th houses from that point on. The lord of the third and the eleventh house also plays a key role in the event. Similarly, planets located in the 3rd and the 11th houses from the house under consideration with 4 or more benefic points in these houses from their bhinnastakwarg, also perform a key role. The third, sixth, tenth and eleventh houses are known as the Upachaya Houses and has a very important role to play in the results of these houses.

The key concept for finding the timing event for any instant of the life is based on this formula. I have tried this same principal using different houses as the starting point. Then, by figuring out the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses from that starting point, I came to the conclusion that the planet that gets the highest bindus in these houses is the significator planet that gives the results in its antardasha as it relates to the 1 st house starting point.

In the previous chapter, I have given the significations of each house. In my researches, I have found that by just using these houses alone we cannot obtain accurate results. The results indicated by any house cannot be judged by the house or the planets situated in the house, or planets aspecting the house, or its lord and its position etc. (this is the system generally followed). Greater accuracy can be obtained by using the method of the Upachaya Houses. This fact will be self- explanatory when we present some examples.

It was earlier told that the Upachaya Houses are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th places from any house. They play a very important role in the result of any event. If we try to interpret the results of any house by using standard methods, we will

27

usually get wrong results in 90 percent of the cases. However, when using the Upachaya method, the accuracy level becomes much more efficient and greatly increases itself up to 90%.

This table shows the Upachayas from every house as follows:

In the above table one will note that I have distinguished the Upachaya Houses as Main and Secondary. Secondary upchaya houses act only through their lord and the planets located in these houses (but only if they receive more than 4 points). The main upchaya houses, on the other hand, are directly involved in the outcome. More detail will be discussed later on.

Events of the life as indicated by each house and its upchaya house

Each house is allocated some event in the life of an individual. Keen observation can easily prove that the results denoted by any house are the by-product of some other house.

Suppose we take the case of children in general. Usually, this is signified by the fifth house. The birth of a child is a factor of the fifth house, along with the 12th, 2nd, 9th, and 10th. The second house denotes the family members and relatives. There is an increase in the members of the family as soon as the child is born. A newly born child also changes the relationship as the male now becomes a father and the female becomes a mother. Therefore, the status is also changed and it can be said that the 10th house is also affected by this. The ninth house also indicates continuation of the heritage and its heirs. The twelfth house indicates

28

the mating of the male and the female, without which any child can be born through natural means (excluding test tube babies here).

So instead of looking at the fifth house first, consider the child to be the result of the twelfth house and its upchaya houses as indicated by the red house numbers below). We then see that the fifth house is the sixth from the twelfth. (as noted in BLUE). Similarly the ninth house is the tenth from the twelfth house. The second and the tenth are three and eleven houses away from 12 th . Thus, the birth of a child using the Upachaya method, is the factor of the 12th, 2nd, 5th, 9th and 10th houses.

All the above houses play a key role in the timing of the event and must be considered. If any of these houses do not contribute, then it will be difficult to have a child. The lords of the 3rd and the 11th house from the twelfth means that the lords of the second and the tenth houses play a vital role. Similarly, any planet in the 2nd and 10th house with more than 4 points also has importance here.

In order to determine a timed event that focuses on children or childbirth, one should consider the 12th house and the upchaya houses from it.

New concept for finding the results

Do not get the following house meanings mixed up with the ones in the previous chapter. These meanings will be the equivalent of the 6th house from itself as they are being viewed from the perspective of the Upachaya Houses. In other words, think ësixth houseí when you read the first, and seventh house, when you read the second, etc.

29

First house: From the first house and its upchaya houses, the capacity of the person, the capability of doing oneís own business, service, line of the business, social status, category in the service etc. and the timed event of such various matters can be properly assessed.

Second house: From the second house and its upchaya houses, the marriage, the happiness or conflicts in the married life, number of marriages, unmarried state, friendships with the opposite sex and the timing events of all these matters can be judged.

(Please note that I have done much research on hundreds of charts in order to test this principle and have found it to be VERY accurate. This method can be tested for any person married or unmarried. The correctness of the chart can also be checked and the correction of the birth time can be rectified to seconds. The compatibility can also be judged for male and female charts. The proper partner can be selected by applying this method to both charts. The marriage time for both male and female should coincide.)

Third house: From the third house and its upchaya houses, the longevity and the health can be judged, along with the timing of the event.

Fourth house: From the fourth house and its upchaya houses, the luck factor,

favorable or unfavorable time etc. can be judged so the time period is clear.

Fifth house: From the fifth house and its upchaya houses, the achievement of

success, authority, higher post, success in elections, starting oneís own business can be judged.

Sixth house:

earning money or a favorable period for earning can be judged.

From the sixth house and its upachaya houses, the means of

Seventh house: From the seventh house and its upachaya houses, the sexual

relationships with the opposite sex other than the marriage partner, foreign relations and bed comforts can be judged.

Eight house: From the eighth house and its upchaya houses, details about the individuality and the personality can be confirmed.

Ninth house: From the ninth house and its upchaya houses, the happiness from relations and inheritable property can be judged.

Tenth house: From the tenth house and its upchaya houses, courage, brothers

and sisters, writing of books, contracts, agreements, publications etc. can be judged.

30

Eleventh house: From the eleventh house and its upchaya houses, anything

regarding landed property, home comforts and oneís own house can be judged.

Twelfth house: From the twelfth house and its upachaya houses, any matters revolving around children can be properly assessed.

A more thorough range was covered on the meanings of the houses in the last chapter and by using this method in this way, the whole life can be assessed with a detailed amount of accuracy. Remember that these significations are the same as indicated by the sages for the sixth house from these houses!

LESSON 6

Krushna’s Ayanamsa Table

There are two systems of calculating the longitude of the planets, the Tropical Zodiac (Sayana) and the Sidereal Zodiac (Nirayana). The longitudinal differences between these two systems is known as the ayanamsa.

We use the Sidereal system, so the correct value on the ayanamsa is very important. The longitudes of the planets are dependent upon the ayanamsa as it will effect not only the longitude of the Ascendant, but the 16 divisional charts as well. The Vimshottari Dasha is calculated from the Moon’s longitudes and one second of difference may result in 1 to 3.6 hours difference in the dasha period, so a difference of one minute will be equal to 2.5 days to 9 days.

Different scientists and astrologers are of different opinions about this “overlapping” of both zodiacs. Both of them actually overlapped in 285AD, but since then, the accumulated ‘out of alignment’ difference between these two zodiacs has widened throughout the years to 23-24 degrees and is known as the “precession of the equinox”. Due to this precession, it moves at a rate of about one degree every 72 years. Thus, the starting point when the two zodiacs last coincided, has been given anywhere from 388 B.C to 498 A.D. The values can range anywhere from 46.3 seconds to 59.9 seconds per year.

I have chosen the starting date that both zodiacs coincided last, as 24 th Feb 366 A.D.

In the year 1900, Krushna’s Ayanamsa is 21:33:23. The yearly speed of precession from 1900 to 2000 is 50.96. From the year 2001 to 2100, the yearly rate of precession is 51 seconds.

This will give the most satisfactory value of Krushna’s Ayanamsa.

USING THE FORMULA CHART:

In the following example on the next page, you will be able to calculate manually how to come to the proper ayanamsa value for whatever day you were born by following the template given in the formula chart, using March 12, 1949, below, as an example.

By checking the table “HOW TO FIND THE NUMBER DAY OF THE YEAR”, you can see that March 12 th is day 71 from January 1 st .

32

Over a period of one year or 365.25 days, the total precession is 00:00:51 or 51 seconds. Therefore 365.25 is the equivalent of 51 seconds and 71 is equivalent to how many seconds have gone by so far. The math now becomes: 71 / 365.25 * 51 seconds = 9.913758 seconds. Round this off to 10 seconds and add those 10 seconds to the ayanamsa value for the year 1949 that can be found in Krushna’s Ayanamsa Table on the next page. (see the Formula Chart below).

The total value in BOLD lettering will be in seconds, so addition should also be in seconds. The final ayanamsha for the date of March 12, 1949 is 22:15:09

The precession for the year 1900 to 2000 may be taken as 50.96

For years 2000 to 2100, it is 51.00 For years 2100 to 2200, it is 51.05 For years 2200 to 2300, it is 51.08 For years 2300 to 2400, it is 51.14

Actually, the increase is approximately 0.044 seconds over a span of 100 years, so per year, it is increasing by a value of 0.00044 seconds per year.

On the next page, I will give my Ayanamsha Table. It starts off with the year 366AD (Feb 24 th ), then reverts to Jan 1 st for all the other longitudes. Starting from the year 1919, it will give every consecutive year thereafter up until the year of 2100. From the years 2200-2500, it lists the ayanamsa in 100 year intervals. (marked in RED in table).
