COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The SCS world language program emphasizes communication and using languages in real-life
situations. With this in mind, this course will put emphasis on learning the necessary vocabulary,
in the dynamics of the language and the understanding of the culture to be able to become
proficient at this level in using the language to deal with daily situations in Spanish, as well as to
be able to communicate in a meaningful way with millions of people in the many Spanish-
Speaking countries around the world and here in the United States.

Each level of the SCS language curriculum is guided by clear statements of what students will
know and be able to do. Realistic expectations for how well students will be able to use their
language and cultural skills are also clearly stated. These objectives determine what teachers
teach, what practice activities are provided to students, and how student progress is evaluated.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the sequential Second Academic Year of World Language Spanish ll you will be
able to

Express needs and preferences
Express feelings and emotions
Give and follow simple directions
Ask and answer simple questions about topics such as school, family, past experiences, future
goals, special
events, the community, daily activities, etc.
Read and understand simple, level appropriate, authentic text
Give brief, organized oral presentations with visual aids
Write short, organized paragraphs about familiar topics
Demonstrate greater understanding of the influence of geography on food, clothing, and other
cultural aspects
Compare and contrast with a deeper understanding of the cultural similarities and differences
Compare and contrast the viewpoints of the target culture with their own
Compare essential structures of the target language with their own
Use simple sentences and phrases to narrate In the past about familiar topics
Recognize the future tense
Use level appropriate idiomatic expressions of the target language
With this in mind, it is important that you the student understand that is strongly recommended
to check on a regular basis your understanding of what was learned in class doing the exercises
assigned and participating regularly in class.

MATERIALS NEEDED

1 Inch 3-ring binder and 1 pack of five dividers
1 Pack notebook paper (college ruled, 3 hole punched)
3 pencils and 3 pens -blue, black and red
1 Merriam-Webster's Pocket Spanish-English Dictionary

1 100 pack of 4x6 Index cards (white or colored)
1 Box of kleenex
3 Dry erase Expo markers



SPANISH ll CURRICULUM:

1st Semester
Unit 1 Entertain me-
I can introduce myself and tell basic information about my life, likes/dislikes, school, family, etc
Unit 2 My daily life-
I can ask and answer simple questions about daily routines and activities and day-to-day
activities.
Unit 3 Healthy living-
I can talk about healthy food choices using healthy eating guidelines and my dietary needs.

2nd Semester
Unit 4 Youth-
Ask and answer basic personal questions needed for paper work at a hospital or doctors office.
Unit 5 Travel-
I can ask and answer questions about where one can go to do things in a city. Directions
Unit 6 Lets celebrate -
I can talk about a celebration (or celebrations) in which I participated.






COURSE FORMAT:
It is well recognized that different students learn better under a variety of different learning
methods. Accordingly, this course uses many different techniques to enhance learning. A
textbook is provided in class as a resource to allow the student to attend class with a basic
knowledge of the course content. The student also will use the Internet and the computer to
provide day-to-day contact with the instructor and your peers.

Tutoring hours:
Tuesdays from 2:30- 3:30 or by appointment. Please let me know in advance if you are going to
be late.

Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to attend class daily. Attendance is required in this course as it is part of
your participation grade. See attendance policy for excused and classwork makeup work
procedures.

GRADES:
In compliance with SCS policy > Grading Scale - Grades in classwork will be reported on
report cards and transcript records using numerical values as indicated below:
A 93-100
B 85-92
C 75-84
D 70-74
F Below 70

CLASS PARTICIPATION > Attendance is mandatory (See SCS policy for details). Since
attendance is part of this grade, there will be no make-up of missed daily work. You are
expected to contribute to the daily joint activities we perform. They are meant to help you
improve your understanding of the material being taught. You are to be silent when instructions
are being, and you are to remain on task when working in group assignments.


PERFORMANCE BASED ASSESSMENTS > Assessments will be formatted differently
depending on the learning target. These are developed to measure your competency in the
language using the learned material. Projects, tests, and group-work will be graded under this
evaluation component.


CLASSWORK> This course involves a great deal of reading, preparation, and practice. Weekly
reading and written assignments will be given. These may consist of exercises from the text,
handouts, cases, and/or other assignments. The daily grade will be based on the work done in
class. I will give a number of quizzes based upon the material being covered. Once the
minimum number of quizzes has been given, additional quizzes will be offered as a means of
improving your daily grade.


HOMEWORK > Homework will be graded as an average of the collected assignments. This will
be used in calculating your overall grade in the course. The exercises and problems given on
the assignment sheet are to be completed prior to class on the date assigned. Problems and
exercises assigned must be submitted by the time specified in the instructions.


EXAMS > Exams are to be taken in class without notes or books. If you miss an exam, you
must contact the teacher immediately to schedule another time to take the exam. You are only
allowed to retake an exam if you have an excused absence.


QUIZZES > Quizzes are an important part of not only your grade, but it is a meaningful measure
of your understanding of the material being taught. I reserve the right to assign a quiz in each
lesson as I see appropriate in measuring competency of the taught lesson. You will see quizzes
formatted in different ways to meet your current level of understanding.


CONDUCT GRADES -SCS > In all schools, students' conduct is graded as excellent,
satisfactory, needs improvement or unsatisfactory, and the initial letter "E", "S", "N", or "U" is
used to report the conduct grade.

CLASSROOM RULES
I expect you to:
Be on time
Be prepared
Be respectful and follow directions the first time they are given
Be ready to participate
Behave appropriately


Make Up Work
Students are required to make up quizzes, tests and major assessments. If the student
misses an assignment, the students will have to speak to Mr. Villarreal after school, the
day they return. It is the students responsibility to contact Mr. Villarreal to coordinate a
makeup.
I do not give Incompletes. If missing work is not made up within a week, the missing
grades will remain 0s
Unexcused absences will result in no opportunity for make up and 0s will be
given for missed work

Academic Honesty Statement:
Students are expected to complete their own work. Any copying on any assignments will not be
tolerated and will result in a grade of zero for both the student copying the material and the
student who allowed their work to be copied. If a student has a question about an assignment or
needs feedback, he/she should ask the teacher. Cheating on Quizzes or Tests will also result in
a grade of zero. If a student has an emergency and is not prepared to take a test or quiz and
feels compelled to cheat, they should discuss the situation with me. I may consider allowing the
student to make up the test or quiz before or after school. This will be handled on a case-by-
case basis.

EXTRA CREDIT > is given for missed assignments or poor performance in certain areas. I
reserve the right to refuse la asignacon de extra credit work.

DISCLAIMER:
This syllabus is not to be considered a contract, but merely a guide to assist the student in
planning. It is subject to change. While these changes will be announced well in advance in
class, it is the students responsibility to be present when they are announced. Students are
expected to comply with all class policies outlined in the syllabus.






























Expectations and Responsibilities Contract

What you can expect from Mr. Villarreal:

1. I will be on time and present unless extremely sick, at in-service, or dealing with a family
emergency.
2. I will have well-prepared lessons that reflect the curriculum and have real-life applications.
3. I will provide both group and individualized learning activities.
4. I will return grades in a timely manner.
5. I will have high expectations of all students and hold them to these standards.
6. I will be available for tutoring after school and will advise students of my availability times.
7. I will provide opportunities for extra credit and will give students plenty of notice so that they can
complete these assignments if they wish.
8. Evidence of participation over and above what is expected may also result in extra credit points.
9. I will provide a fair grading system.
10. I will do everything in my power to help students succeed.

What Mr. Villarreal expects of his students:

1. Arrive on time and be ready to work with all necessary supplies and writing utensils when the bell
rings. All missed work due to absenteeism must be made up on the students own time, NOT
class time.
2. Comply with all school rules, policies and procedures. This includes the dress code and cell
phone policy! If you are caught using a cell phone in class you may receive a zero for the
assignment we are working on.
3. No eating, drinking, gum chewing, grooming or sleeping in the classroom.
4. Raise your hand to be allowed to speak or move about.
5. NO cheating. Cheating results in a 0 for that assignment or test. Do your own work. If you let
someone copy your work it will result in two zeros, yours and the person who copied your work.
6. Do not disrupt my class by asking to leave the room. Restroom breaks are between classes
7. Respect yourself and others, including the teacher.
8. Throw away trash before class starts or after it ends. Do not interrupt the class to throw
something away and do not throw things into the trash from your seat. Pick up all trash around
you and your desk before exiting the room. Do not throw anything across the room or at another
student or teacher.
9. Enter and exit the classroom calmly and quietly. Do not interrupt the class by entering noisily if
you are tardy. Do not interrupt the class to ask what you missed. See me after class or after
school. It is your responsibility to get the notes that you missed from a classmate.
10. All work is to be turned in on time.
11. Follow any and all additional rules posted in the classroom.
