IT WAS ONCE THE BIGGEST VENUE FOR AFRICAN
AMERICAN ENTERTAINMENT. OPENING IN 1910, THE
HOWARD THEATRE WAS A TREASURE TO D-Cs SHAW
NEIGHBORHOOD. NOW, THERE ARE PLANS TO RE-
BUILD THIS HISTORIC LANDMARK, MAKING IT A
STAPLE IN THE COMMUNITY LIKE IT ONCE WAS.
HERES ANASTACIA MEBANE WITH MORE.

BEFORE THE APOLLO IN HARLEM, IT WAS THE
HOWARD THEATRE IN NORTHWEST D-C ON THE
CORNER OF 7TH AND T STREETS. IT WAS CALLED THE
THEATRE OF THE PEOPLE. HISTORIAN JAMAL
MUHAMMAD SAYS ITS SUCH A VITAL PART OF THE
BLACK COMMUNITY.

Its very important because of all the history of our
culture was in the Howard Theatre. Not as much as
one would think next door; No, it was the Howard
Theatre.

IN ITS HEYDAY, THE HOWARD THEATRE WAS HOME
TO REDD FOXX, BILLIE HOLIDAY AND STEVIE
WONDER. IN A POEM WALTER RAY JR. REMEMBERS
SEEING HIS FAVORITE TENOR SAX PLAYER LESTER
YOUNG.

In the cheap seats, where I sat/ Coolin out, layin
back/Prayers touch my soul from inside/Liftin me
on his tenor ride/To my feet begin actin wild/ And I
was dancin in the aisle.

AFTER THE 1968 RIOTS, THE THEATRE SUFFERED. THE
HOWARD CLOSED ITS DOORS IN 1980. NOW LOCAL
DEVELOPER CHIP ELLIS IS TRYING TO RESTORE THE
THEATRE, WORKING WITH THE CITY AND MARTINEZ
AND JOHNSON ARCHITECTURAL FIRM.
