extremely important exam and could make the difference between life and death for a patient. VELscope used as an adjunct to the traditional oral cancer exam can help the clinician locate cancerous lesions in their earliest stages where the naked eye could not. ORAL CANCER One of the most common cancers with an extremely high and fast mortality rate. Benign, premalignant and malignant lesions can appear in a variety of ways to no visual clues at all. ORAL CANCER SCREENING Clinicians perform a traditional oral screening using visual inspection and palpation of the tissues of the head, neck and mouth. Early oral cancer often presents no clinical signs and is undiagnosed until a later, more serious stage. TISSUE AUTO- FLOURESENCE Tissue auto fluorescence began in use with bronchoscopy, esophageal examination, colonoscopy, and skin evaluation. Clinical practice for noninvasive imaging of the oral mucosa has become a recent growing interest. It is self-induced fluorescent lighting used to detect lesions in natural tissues within the body. Other similar light-based products available are Vizilite Plus with TBlue System, Identifi, Microlux/DL, and Orascoptic DK. VELSCOPE VELscope was developed in collaboration with British Columbia Cancer Agency and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
It is a lightweight, handheld, cordless device with a lens for viewing inside of the mouth. The purpose of VELscope is to aid in the detection of possible pre- cancerous or cancerous oral lesions. VELscope technology stimulates the oral soft tissues with a blue light. It is a non-evasive, oral cancer screening procedure that detects changes of the tissues by self-fluorescence. Advantages: Cordless, lightweight device that uses no rinses or dyes. Provides a non-invasive procedure with an easy set up and use. Can easily provide photo-documents for future reference. Screenings are affordable for patients ranging from $0 to $15. Its use reinforces the idea of the caring dental practice. Most importantly, could potentially save a patients life. Disadvantages: It is an oral cancer screening device that is used as an adjunct to the traditional oral cancer screening, not a replacement. Patient discomfort from excessive heat in a close tissue examination is possible..
