Everything YOU Need to Know About Moby Max

Thank you for your continued support with our student paced and student/parent-monitored
program Moby Max. Addlestone Hebrew Academy will continue with Moby Max as a part of our
curriculum to aid in filling in the gaps and enriching our students mathematical abilities. We are proud
to say that cumulatively we have seen our standardized test scores improve and a large part of that
improvement we owe to Moby Max.
Moby Curriculum sets the standards in effectiveness. Students are able to increase an average
of 1.5 grade levels within just 40 hours of practice. Mobys curriculum will help your student increase
their learning velocity.
Moby Maxs adaptive curriculum creates a unique, individualized education plan for each
student, allowing gifted students to progress as quickly as they like while simultaneously ensuring that
remedial students get the extra instruction they need.
Guidelines for your childs success through Moby Max
Login
Each child has received a unique username and password. Passwords can be changed and must
be done so through your childs teacher. Moby Max is available on any device with an internet
connection. Log onto www.mobymax.com and click sign in at the top right corner. Your child will sign
in as a student through our group by typing in Addlestone and clicking the button to select our school.
From there, their username and password is needed to finish the login process.
The math department only utilizes the buttons that say Math and Fact Master. Your child may
enjoy working through the other programs, but the time spent on those will not count towards their
Moby Max Time.
Moby Max Time
The amount of time a student works on Moby Max will determine their grade per week; not how well
they perform. The amount of time your child spends on Moby Max will be determined by actual active
minutes and focus percentage.
Focus Percentage
Focus percentage is the amount of time it takes a student to complete a new problem against the
amount of time it took for that same student to complete different grade level problems during their
placement test. We like to see a focus percentage higher than 85% per session to count for full credit.
Placement Test
Each student will take three placement tests during the year: middle of August, early January,
and end of May. These placement tests will show your childs progress at critical times of the
school year. Placement tests are taken in school without any teacher assistance. The tests start
off at Kindergarten level and progress from that point. The more questions your child answers
correctly, the farther into the test they will progress. During this time, Moby Max is giving
specific problems to assess the gaps your child may have in their cognitive processing.
Gaps Lets say your child is a rising 6
th
grader and is fairly comfortable with
mathematic as an academic subject. Moby Max attempts to ask your child a question
about elapsed time, which is a concept taught in second and third grade. Your child
misses the question. Does that mean that your child does not know third grade
mathematics? Of course not, but the gap has been identified and will be one of the first
concepts your child will work through once the placement test is over.
Focus percentage guidelines have been put in place for the student who likes to sit down to log on to
Moby Max, gets up, walks around, grabs a snack in the kitchen, plays with the puppy, and lets the Moby
Max timer count that as active time. If your child continuously receives a focus percentage lower than
85%, please do not be frustrated. We monitor the focus percentages on a weekly basis and will be in
contact with you about ways that we can improve this.
Everything YOU Need to Know About Moby Max
Moby Max Common Questions
My childs focus percentage is consistently low. How can my child improve their statistics?
More time may be needed to counter balance the empty time
Use the sketch pad located on the computer screen to work on problems
Bring student in before school so teacher may be able to monitor and observe
We may have to administer a new placement test ask teacher for details
When does the week start and end for Moby Max?
Moby Max week starts Monday mornings at 12:00am and ends Sunday evenings at 11:59pm
What is the difference between school and home time? Which one counts towards their minutes?
Ask specific teachers for clarification. Fifth through eighth grade home time counts for homework
grades unless otherwise specified.
Can I monitor my childs progress?
Yes! Log in as a parent (instead of as a student) with your childs username and password.
My child has come to the end of Moby Max, what do they do now?
Moby Max stops at the end of 8
th
grade material for many good reasons. If your child reaches that point,
they are responsible for a placement test immediately. If they pass the placement test at a 9.0 grade
level then they are only responsible for subsequent placement tests that the class completes during the
year.
The concept Moby Max is teaching my child is too complicated. What should we do?
Lower school: Once the lesson begins, try the teach me button. If that does not work, make
note of this with your childs teacher and she will be able to bypass this concept. If you would like to
manually bypass the concept yourself, input random answers into the answer section and move on- let
your teacher know. The concept will make its way back to your child at an appropriate time.
Middle school: After the teach me button does not help, your child may bypass the concept by
inputting random answers. However, as middle school teachers, we will have a meeting with your child
if multiple concepts are skipped in a row. At this age and responsibility level, it is necessary that your
child learns how to attempt and work through challenging concepts. This act will make them
accountable for their learning and gives them a sense of ownership over their academics. It may be
tough at first, but they will thrive!
My childs grade level on Moby Max is one or two grade levels higher/lower than the grade they are
currently in. What does this mean?
Moby Maxs grade level is an approximation of your childs grade level in mathematics in comparison to
the common core standards. Take these numbers for what they are, but mostly take a look at the
percentage of each grade level that your child knows to get a better sense of what the grade level
means.
Below grade level: If your child looks to be below grade level, try to look at the progress theyre
making through the school year and ask yourself if this is normal for your child. If they are not improving
at a startling rate, we can schedule a meeting with your childs teacher and student support if
individualized attention needs to be administered.
Above grade level: Enrichment may be needed to supplement. However, the number you see on Moby
Max may be due to the fact that they have completed concepts with that are of a certain grade level,
but may have not mastered.
