Instructions: Please answer the following questions as comprehensively as possible. When
answering the questions, those who are not nurses or are not practicing nurses may relate it to
your line of work or profession as applicable. Use the appropriate format stated in the course
outline. Do not just copy and paste your answers. Organize your thoughts properly and in a
logical manner. Print and submit it to me in class and place it in a clear book/ plastic folder.

I. Fundamentals of Leadership and Management (Choose one).

1. Review the various leadership and management theories discussed during class or
based from various literature. Which ones might apply to leading in todays health-care
environment and in your line of work/field? State the reasons for your choice and
Support your answer with specific examples.

2. Select an individual whose leadership and management skills you particularly admire.
What are some qualities and behaviors that this individual displays? How do these relate
to the leadership and management theories discussed? In what ways could you emulate
this person?

3. Describe your ideal nurse manger in terms of the person for whom you would most like
to work. Then describe the worst nurse manager you can imagine, and explain why this
person would be very difficult.

4. Write down your vision of the future of your career. Explain how you can influence the
future by pursuing a specific desired end. Chart the exact steps toward attaining your

II. Organization (Choose one).

1. Describe the organizational characteristics of a facility in which you currently have a
clinical assignment. You may describe your previous or current assignment. Include the
following: the type of organization, the organizational culture, how the organization is
structured, and the formal and informal goals and processes of the organization.

2. Define power, and describe how power affects the relationships between people of
different disciplines (e.g., nursing, medicine, physical therapy, housekeeping,
administration, finance, social work) in a health-care organization.

3. Describe communication strategies for various generations in the workforce. What it
effect does it have in an organization? Identify a plan for enhancing communication
between generations and explain.

4. Identify ways to enhance collaborative communication with physicians. Decide on a plan
for enhancing communication between nurses and physicians.

5. Discuss ways in which nurses or other health care professionals can become more
empowered. How can you use your leadership and management skills to do this?

6. What is peer review? How is it different from other types of evaluation? Why is it

III. Conflict Management (Choose one).

1. What is the difference between problem resolution and negotiation? Under what
circumstances would you use one or the other? Cite examples.

2. Identify a conflict (actual or potential) in your clinical area or your line of work, and
explain how either problem resolution or negotiation could be used to resolve it. Cite
examples to prove it.

IV. Change in the Organization (Choose one).

1. Why is change inevitable? What would happen if no change at all occurred in health
care? Cite examples to prove this.

2. Why do people resist change? Why do nursing staff members or other health care
professionals seem particularly resistant to change? How can leaders overcome
resistance to change?

3. Describe the process of implementing a change from beginning to end. Use an example
from your clinical experience to illustrate this process.

4. What specific actions would you take to challenge the status quo when it reduces client
and/or nurse wellness? What specific actions would you take to encourage others to do
the same?

5. Being an advocate for your staff is part of your job as a nurse manager. Explain and be
very specific about what youd say and do to decide how and when to support your
staffs decisions despite opposition and to avoid getting drawn into personal agendas

V. Delegation (Choose one).

1. What factors need to be considered when delegating tasks? What is the difference
between the delegation and the assignment of a task? How is this applied in your work?

2. What type of nursing delivery model is implemented on your assigned clinical unit? Give
examples of the roles of the personnel engaged in client care to support your answer.

VI. Quality Improvement

1. Describe how regulatory agencies and accrediting agencies (i.e. ISO, JCI, PhilHealth,
DOH, and etc.) affect patient care and outcomes in a health care organization. Describe
the pros and cons of having such hospital accreditations in your institution. Choose a
specific accrediting body to discuss.

VII. Ethical and Legal Issues of Practice

1. Discuss the most ethical response to the following situations with at least three other
learners, and give a rationale for your answer (Choose one).

a. A new RN/health care professional who believes in information taught in class but
observes a staff breaking technique

b. An RN /health care professional who observes a physician acting in such a way that
could result in a misdiagnosis

c. A nurse /health care professional leader who observes another nurse/health care
professional or physician displaying inappropriate behavior with a client or family
member of a client

d. A nurse leader/health care professional who observes a nurse/health care
professional who is a friend of a physician performing procedures outside her scope
of practice
