Expository Essay Peer Review Revising and Editing

Checklist
Directions: Read your classmates essay, respond as completely as you can, and return it to
them. When you receive your paper back, revise your draft, and write your final draft.
1. Do they have an engaging/attention grabbing/effective hook? If not, tell them what you would do
to fix it if it were your paper. Be specific.
2. Does their thesis have an answer the question and address the why? If not, tell them what you
would do to fix it if it were your paper. Be specific.
3. Does their essay have appropriate transitions? If not, tell them what you would do to fix it if it
were your paper. Be specific.
4. Did they indent all paragraphs? If not, tell them what you would do to fix it if it were your paper.
Be specific.
5. Do they have at least one real life example? If not, tell them what you would do to fix it if it were
your paper. Be specific.
6. Are their examples specific enough for you to visualize what they were saying? If not, tell them
what you would do to fix it if it were your paper. Be specific.
7. Does their real-life example address the 5 Ws and Hs (Who, what, where, when, why, and how)?
If not, tell them what you would do to fix it if it were your paper. Be specific.
8. Do they have a unique voice/personality? In other words, can you hear their personality in their
writing, or does it sound like a robot? If not, tell them what you would do to fix it if it were your
paper. Be specific.
9. Is the paper organized appropriately? Meaning, do they have all parts:
a. A hook,
b. A thesis statement,
c. Transitions,
d. Topic sentences at the beginning of body paragraphs,
e. At least one real-life example,
f. Concluding sentences at the end of body paragraphs
g. A restated thesis statement,
h. A closing statement
10. Do they have an effective restated thesis/closing statement that mirrors the introduction? If not,
tell them what you would do to fix it if it were your paper. Be specific.
11. Do they have errors in grammar/sentence structure/punctuation/capitalization errors/typos? If
not, tell them what you would do to fix it if it were your paper. Be specific.
