Lesson Plan

Teacher Name Mrs. E. Haden

Subject Geometry
Grade level High School
Time duration 90 minutes
Materials needed iPad/MacBook for the teacher
Internet
Access to a video camera or video camera app
Tablet and/or laptop for each group of three students
Student notes
Lesson Objective SOL-G.11
The student will use angles, arcs, chords, tangents, and secants to

c) find arc lengths and areas of sectors in circles.

Purpose of this lesson During this lesson students will demonstrate that they know how to find the
area of a sector and find arc length. They will demonstrate what the difference
between the two is and how to remember the formula. The students will also
describe the definitions of area of a sector and arc length using real world
scenarios.
Activity During this lesson the students will use their tablet or laptop to create a video
that demonstrates their ability to compute area of a sector, arc length and
relate it to real world situations.

Explain the assignment
Demonstrate to the students what you want them to do by creating an
example in front of the class
o Students may use the video camera on their tablet/pc, video,
camstudio, youtube, etc.
o I will be using recorder on macbook
Separate the students into groups of three.
Assign each group three problems to solve. Each problem will have to
calculate area of a sector and arc length. Students will, within their
groups, each choose one problem.
The students will then work in groups of three to create their video.
o Each student will record himself or herself solving one of the
problems for their group video.
Once each student has created their video the remaining two group
members will critique the video and give their group members on how
to improve their video. Students will re-record as needed.
Once the students are done they will post a link to their video on the
social media of their choice. The students must have a typed
introduction stating what the video will be about and there must be
space for others to ask questions and/or comment on the video.
The students will copy and paste a link to the video on a word
document and email to the teacher.
Assessment The teacher will assess the students
Outstanding (10) Average (6-9) Below Average (Below 6)
Clear understanding
and demonstration of
how to find the arc
length and area of a
sector. Student stated
how to remember the
formulas for arc length
and area of a sector.
Some understanding
and demonstration of
how to find the arc
length and area of a
sector. Student did
not fully state how to
remember the
formulas for arc length
and area of a sector.
No understanding and
demonstration of how to
find the arc length and
area of a sector. Student
did not state how to
remember the formulas
for arc length and area of
a sector.
Clear definitions that
relate to real-world
situations.
Not so clear definitions
that relate to real-
world situations.
No definitions that relate
to real-world situations.

The lesson plan above relates to the ISTE Standards for Teachers because it (1a)
promotes, supports, and models creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. The
students are told to make a video; it does not say how they have to display in he video. Some
students may want to use their creative juices and act it out or maybe not even talk use flash
cards to tell their story as some do on social media. It is up to the students to decide which way
they want to get their point across. This lesson plan (3a) demonstrates fluency in technology
systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations because
students will have to come to class with some prior knowledge of the content and of how to
record a general video. Students will be using what they previously know about recording and
social media to create a new video and upload or either posts the link to any social media of their
choice. This lesson plan also demonstrates (3c) communication of relevant information and
ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
because students will have most likely brought materials home to their parents before which are
mostly papers and now they have something new to show their parents through a different digital
device on a social media. This lesson plan also shows (4a) that the teacher can advocate, model,
and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for
copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources. While doing this
assignment the teacher gave credit to where the problem came from, as the students should do
the same. Just as the teacher posted the link on Facebook and did not post anything
inappropriate the students will do so also.
This lesson plan ties into the Technology Skills for Instructional Personnel (1 &3)
because the teacher is showing that she is capable of her usage of a computer system and
software because she made an example video. It displays usage of TSIP (5) because it focuses
on VA SOL G.11, which is directly related to VA Standards of Learning. The lesson plan
displays TSIP (8) because the teacher has posted the video to Facebook and did not break any
rules relating to digital citizenship in the process.
