Evolution Of Retail
Barter system was the first form of retail known to
mankind which evolved into village bazaars.
Village bazaars evolved into neighborhood stores
(Kiranas).
Though many small and medium entrepreneurs
invested in retail, they operated in their own
territories .
The retail in India was thus un-organized.
The retail evolution further saw the growth of malls,
the first step towards organized retail.
The retail has been growing at an accelerated pace
in India with the emergence of e-commerce.
4 percent of the retail trade in India comes under
the organized retail


EFFECT OF NEW CHANNELS OF
RETAIL
Ecommerce:
1. Ecommerce got all the brands and goods under
one roof, enabling easy price and product
comparison.
2. They came up with many new practices such as
cash on delivery to woo the conservative
customers and gain their trust
3. They provided better customer services then
normal brick and mortar retail shop owners like
30 day return policy, etc.

Mobile commerce:
With internet at finger tips, various applications
enabled e shopping through mobiles.
Virtual shops
Virtual shops collected data from social
networking sites about users and their
requirements and enabled the users to buy gifts
, desired products etc.
Implications Of FDI
FDI in retail will boost investment in infrastructure from
the retail players which will arrest food and product
wastage.
Removing the middle men will facilitate direct sales from
producers to final sellers. It is expected that this move
will benefit the farmers as they will earn more.
Boost in employment in agriculture, manufacturing,
service, etc.
It is feared that small entrepreneurs, kirana stores, etc
may not survive the competition from foreign retailers.
With 51% FDI in multi-retail we can see foreign retail
companies like Wal-Mart entering Indian markets making
it more competitive.
With increase in competition, it will facilitate the people
to buy goods at a cheaper rate.
