Reflection: How my participation in this project advanced three areas of student learning outcomes.
Goal: Students think critically and creatively. This project gave me the opportunity to eplore the
contri!utions of African"Americans in science, an# to value the future input of this #emographic$ %rior
to ta&ing this course ' ha# imagine# fin#ing myself, as a future e#ucator, in a school (ith the !rightest
stu#ents (ho (oul# !e naturally curious an# nurture# in their curiosities a!out science$ This, '
imagine#, is (here ' (oul# !est thrive, as ' (oul# li&ely have access to !etter materials an# smaller
class si)es$ ' reali)e# after rea#ing these articles that the near eclusion of African"Americans an#
other minorities in the *T+, fiel#s hurts the fiel# of science itself, as all those potential contri!utions
are lost$
Goal: Students develop the knowledge and skills to be civically engaged. 'n researching this issue '
no( un#erstan# that ' myself can ma&e a contri!ution to this area$ -irst an# foremost (ill !e to
recogni)e the !right young min#s ' see in my future classrooms, some of (hom may !e overloo&e#
!ecause of the natural ten#ency, as evi#ence# time an# again, of minorities to !e trac&e# into reme#ial
e#ucation$ ' am a(are of the importance of spotting these &i#s early, an# of nurturing their natural
ten#encies to(ar# the stu#y of science$
Goal: Students communicate effectively. .ne of the !est pieces ' (ill ta&e from this course, an# !y
etension from this project, is to never put someone into a !o they seem to fit at first impression$ '
have learne# a!out the nee# to un#erstan# other cultures in or#er to have a positive effect on young
peoples/ lives$ ' (ill !e face# (ith stu#ents from a multitu#e of !ac&groun#s, an# some may even have
language !arriers, !ut learning to communicate (ith everyone, in a (ay that ma&es sense to all of us,
(ill !e a !ig part of my jo!$
