Budesonide is a corticosteroid used to treat asthma and croup. It works by reducing inflammation in the lungs through inhibiting inflammatory cells and mediators. It can be used for chronic asthma control and maintenance, as well as prophylactic treatment in adults and children. Side effects include cough, vomiting, and diarrhea. When administering budesonide inhalation, patients should be monitored for potential bronchospasm and treated immediately with a bronchodilator if needed. Proper administration technique is also important.

DRUG CLASS: Beta2-Agonist, Corticosteroid, Antiasthma, Antitussive, Analgesic-Antipyretic DRUG MECHANISM: Budesonide is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that exhibits potent glucocorticoid activity and weak mineralocorticoid activity. The exact mechanism of action on inflammation is not known. Glucocorticoids inhibit multiple cell types (e.g., mast cells, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes) and mediator (e.g., histamine, eicosanoids, leukotrienes, and cytokines) production or secretion involved in the inflammatory response. The anti-inflammatory actions of glucocorticoids contribute to their efficacy in asthma. Budesonide decreases airway reactivity to histamine and methacholine in hyperreactive patients. Indications: 1. For the chronic control of signs and symptoms of bronchial asthma 2. For the maintenance treatment of asthma and as prophylactic therapy in adults and children 3. For the management of childhood croup
Contraindications: 1. Hypersensitivity to any component in the product 2. Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required DOSAGE: 250 mcg/mL (500 mcg/ 2 mL) Pulmoneb Suspension for Nebulization ADVERSE EFFECTS: Cough, Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, dry mouth, nausea, throat irritation NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Budesonide inhalation is NOT indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm 2. As with other inhaled medications, bronchospasm may occur with an immediate increase in wheezing after dosing. 3. Treat bronchospasm immediately with a fast-acting bronchodilator if it occurs after dosing with inhaled budesonide. 4. During inhalation turbuhaler must be in the upright or horizontal position 5. Advice patient to gargle with water after each dose
