GENERIC NAME: Budesonide

BRAND NAME: Asmavent

DRUG CLASS: Beta2-Agonist, Corticosteroid, Antiasthma, Antitussive, Analgesic-Antipyretic
DRUG MECHANISM: Budesonide is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that exhibits potent
glucocorticoid activity and weak mineralocorticoid activity. The exact mechanism of action on
inflammation is not known. Glucocorticoids inhibit multiple cell types (e.g., mast cells, eosinophils,
neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes) and mediator (e.g., histamine, eicosanoids, leukotrienes,
and cytokines) production or secretion involved in the inflammatory response. The anti-inflammatory
actions of glucocorticoids contribute to their efficacy in asthma. Budesonide decreases airway reactivity
to histamine and methacholine in hyperreactive patients.
