Mechanical engineering is broad branch of engineering that deals with machines
just like the name says. Machine in this case refers to any movable device with several
parts. Mechanical engineers build and design engines, powers plants etc., with the
knowledge of principle of physics and engineering. The University of Texas at El Paso
engineering website summaries what the program is about. Their website uses the
Aristotles Pathos, Ethos and Logos to convince the audience on why to choose their
program.

The homepage opens with a clear use of logos on different sections. The
homepage includes so many important links directing to important things about the
degree like link to other departments, about the degree and course plan etc. There is also
a side bar for other academic programs under mechanical engineering like the bachelors,
masters and PhD. This links make the homepage very logical and easy to navigate
because it leads to any desirable question a prospective student may have. There is also a
side bar for other academic programs under mechanical engineering like the bachelors,
masters and PhD. There are too places where the address of their office was written
therefore invoking consistency in their message. A link leads to fact sheets where their
achievements where written as well as the statistics of the whole faculty both present and
past.

Pathos was used all over the website. There is a mixture of different levels of
orange and green on the pages and these colors a cool colors. Pathos is also used on all
the pages by the use of different picture on each of them. These pictures relate give a

better insight about the link beside them therefore logos is also used because it makes
navigation easier. There is no sound on the websites, which would have invoked more
emotion. Appeal values are examples of pathos, this was used on the bachelor
program page where it says Our graduates recognize the importance of and participate
in continuous learning activities to advance their careers, personal interests and life
goals.

Ethos is not the least used rhetorical appeal but its clear because the website need
to be as credible as possible since its sole aim is to recruit the audience and they were.
Firstly, the mechanical engineering page a sub-part of the UTEP website. UTEP being a
big accredited university gives the page authority and a great level of credibility. The
contact information of the mechanical engineering faculty is easily located on the page
incase the reader doubt the contents. There is clear use of good grammar and
punctuations, which are also ethos. The sub page titled About M.E displays a message
from the chairman of the mechanical engineering department with the name Ahsan
Choudhuri, Ph.D. Another use of ethos is the Vision and mission tab, which is the agenda
of the discourse community. The copyright message at the foot of the page is
strengthened the credulity and but wasnt up to date.
