Oputa Chinedu William

English 1311

I have written and read a lot of things without thinking of how it
all started. Writing from what I have learnt means expressing feeling or
ideas about a particular topic on a paper or maybe computer. Reading is
to look at and understand what you or others have written. Even though
we do it almost every day, reading and writings is always improving
because we keep learning different kinds of it as we progress in school.
My history of writing and reading is still a vivid one. The earliest I
can remember about reading and writing was in my elementary school
days .I started from being able to name objects, animal, countries and
foods, which seemed hard to do then. As time went on my teachers and
my mother who happened to be a teacher, introduced me on how to
make those words into sentences .The book, which helped me as good
support for sentence construction was called The Queen Premier
which had so many sentences. The book and the teachers served as the
foundation of this early literacy.
I became very good with sentences after time when on and
graduated to compositions by then I was able to read. The compositions
were guided by a 3-paragraph rule, which made them easier. My earliest
compositions were ones like my father, myself and my best day etc.
I enjoyed them because they were the first processes that made me
think more about people around, events and places I have been to. It
brought a creative part of me as well. It increased my confidence in
school and ability to converse fluently.
My vocabulary broadened by the time I got to junior high school
because all the literary works i have been doing. I was introduced to
letters a that level too. I learnt different kind of letter writing starting
from formal (for close relations) to informal. Letters since then have
been helping me to write informal emails. I read books like Jack and the
beans stalk, Hansel and Gretel and some ladybird stories. I also
started reading a type of conversation novel as well but I cant recall
their names clearly. My junior high school served as very important
time in my literary life.
When I got to my senior high school with help of my previous
teachers and tutors I was already conversant with may types of reading
and writing. My senior high school was more of improving my skills in
what I have learnt previously. I was introduced to thesis statement, to
improve the introduction of my essays to inter-exam standards. I was
also introduced to summary writing, which strengthened the conclusion
of my essays. They both have been an uphill task for me to perfect in
and sometimes it gets frustrating when I dont get them right. I started
reading newspapers, magazines and church bulletins with the influence
of my father. This exposed me to various genres of writing because they
have different articles in them.
The most outstanding thing about my history of writing and
reading, was that I while I was learning and improving in English I was
also doing it at the same time in a native language called Igbo and
partially French. The book called writing about writing has made me
aware on how literate I am because of this my Multilanguage education.
In conclusion, I must say that my reading and writing has been a
very good part of my progress in school and have been an interesting
journey. I wouldnt have been able to progress either if not for the good
literary sponsors I had.
