Movies that treat the imagined future and that deal with issues of adolescence coming to
adulthood are represented by "The Hunger Games." The role of movies that present a
view of the future in our own attempts to deal with adolescence is discussed in this
article. It explains how teens are now are dealing with similar circumstances, just without
the whole killing part. They are singled out and ostracized by the older and more
powerful people throughout their teenage lives, much like The Capitol. It is a far fetched,
yet relatable critique of teenagers in todays world.
Bowman, James. "The Hunger Games." The American Spectator, 09 Apr. 2012. Web. 20
July 2014.
In this scholarly article, it is a professional movie critique of The Hunger Games
movie. It also compares the movie to todays reality television. It explains how the people
of Panem, mainly The Capitol, view this horrible and morbid game of killing and
death, as something that can entertain them. It compares these games to the games we
have on our own television shows. How we view a show Survivor as a game that a
Donovan 2

group of people live in for a while and get paid ungodly amounts of money for
winning. While there are actual people that have lived on these islands their whole
lives struggling to survive, while we see it as a game, just like in the movie. It talks about how
it is a sad thing that we can even compare our society to that of the society in the movie,
but it is a reality that we all know is there.
"Capitol Couture." Capitol Couture. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 July 2014.
This website is one all about the fashion throughout The Capitol. It portrays all of the
lavish and ungodly outfits the people that hail from The Capitol wear, and it also shows
how the lower class lives. Some in nice clothing, while others wear scraps that barely
cover their bodies. The Capitol is not only the true enemy because of the Hunger Games,
they are the enemy because they allow, and force the other districts to live in severe
poverty while they revel in their power and glory. It is a shocking display of two totally
different worlds from The Capitol, all the way down to District 12.
Collins, Suzanne, and Phil Falco. The Hunger Games. New York: Scholastic, 2008. Print.
This source is the actual book, The Hunger Games. It is the in depth version of
everything the movie failed to cover. It has descriptions of each District and what each
does and it known for, it describes how horrible The Capitol really is and how bad they
treat their people, and the epic battle Katniss Everdean and Peeta Malark fought to stay
alive while competing in the games. While competing, they both chose not to lose sight
of themselves and what was important to them, which in the end, was the very thing that
saved them and helped them survive the games.
"District 3." The Hunger Games Wiki. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 July 2014.
Donovan 3

This article explains District 3 in The Hunger Games, which is the district my group and I
chose to portray for our final project. It explains that District 3 is the district of
technology, and how they are responsible for many of the technological advances
throughout the years in Panem. It describes how that district welcomes Katniss with open
arms, suggesting that it is one of the more rebellious districts who will be willing to do
whatever they can to help Katniss in the impending revolution. Many of the inhabitants
of District 3 lack physical power, but they more than make up for it with their
intelligence.
"Important Quotations Explained." SparkNotes. SparkNotes, n.d. Web. 20 July 2014.
In this article from SparkNotes, the author talks about all of the important quotations
throughout the book, and explains them in depth in a way that the audience can better
understand the book, The Hunger Games. One of the quotes that they explain is a
quote from Katniss right after the games, and she says that the real Hunger Games is
about to begin, meaning that The Capitol is very angry with her whole berry stunt with
Peeta, and she knows that there will be consequences for her actions. Maybe not
consequences for herself, but consequences for all of the people or her district in general
because they just saw a young girl from District 12 beat The Capitol, so why cant they as
well?
Painter, Judith. "ERIC - Alliances in "The Hunger Games", Geography Teacher, 2012."
ERIC - Alliances in "The Hunger Games", Geography Teacher, 2012. ERIC, 2012.
Web. 20 July 2014.
In this peer-reviewed and scholarly article found on the ERIC database, it talks all about
the different alliances made throughout the Hunger Games. It describes the nature of each
Donovan 4

alliance and whether or not it helped or hurt each tribute. It also talks about the alliance
with The Capitol and how being obedient and compliant with President Snow and the rest
of The Capitol, that would ultimately determine whether or not a tribute would survive
the horrendous games. It explains how Katniss has defied The Capitol, and how that sets
the tone for the rest of the series to follow.
"Panem." The Hunger Games Wiki. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 July 2014.
This article explains everything that there is to know about the city of The Capitol and all
of the districts in Panem. Panem is the country, or continent, that all of the districts,
including The Capitol, resides. It explains the boundaries of each district and what each
district is known for. It also describes the history of Panem and how it was founded and
how out of one country, ended up 12 separate districts. It also explains how the
oppressive capitol has a dictatorship-like control over the districts and people, and how
nothing has really changed there in the last 75 years. It explains how there was revolution
before, and it also eludes to the fact that there will be revolution again, and it is closer
than anyone thinks.
Pinchefsky, Carol. "16 Questions 'The Hunger Games' Movie Doesn't Answer...That the
Book Does." Forbes. Forbes Magazine, 10 Apr. 2012. Web. 20 July 2014.
In this article from Forbes Magazine, it talks about all of the unanswered questions that
the Hunger Games movie has. It talks about things like why were the tributes working
together during the games when the whole point of the games is to kill everyone and be
the last one standing. It also never really explained why there are sponsors throughout the
games. It makes sense that the games is for entertainment purposes for the people, of
Donovan 5

mainly the capitol, but it doesnt seem fair that some of the tributes were given gifts from
the sponsors for nothing other than the fact that they were liked.
"Plot Summary." IMDb. IMDb.com, n.d. Web. 20 July 2014.
This article was just a plain and simple summary of The Hunger Games movie and
everything it contained. It describes the plot line in pretty good detail and gives character
descriptions and evaluations for every character throughout the movie. It also explains
some of the hidden messages throughout the movie, like the totalitarian control of The
Capitol over the people and how everything The Capitol does is a tactic to further
suppress the people and silence their outcries to prevent a revolt. It explains the rebellious
nature of all the districts, but they lack the resources to mount and sustain a revolution.
The Capitol." The Hunger Games Wiki. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 July 2014.
In this article about the first Hunger Games, it talks about The Capitol and their control
on the people throughout the different districts. It describes how the true enemy is The
Capitol regardless of who the tributes have to fight and kill during the games. That it is
not their choice to compete, but it is the capitols, so they are considered the true enemy.
They hold all of the wealth and power throughout all of the districts, and they impose this
power on all of the less fortunate to keep them subdued and to keep them from rebelling
against them. They are without a doubt the true, and only enemy throughout the movie.
"The Capitol." - The Official Government of Panem. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 July 2014.
This was a pretty interesting source, it is a mock website of what The Capitol would
actually have as their own. It highlights what The Capitol is doing in real time as if they
were actually in power. They have advertisement like postings on their saying things like,
Were watching you. It shows how oppressive The Capitol really is and how they
Donovan 6

implement fear into the core of their people. It is a sad and hard way to live, watching a
small percentage of people live lavishly and having more than one could possibly
imagine, while the majority of people struggle to find food and survive.
"The Hunger Games & Dystopia Reading Tags: English, Film, General, Literature,
Reading ." The Hunger Games. GALILEO, 6 Mar. 2014. Web. 20 July 2014.
This article, from the GALILEO database, is a scholarly article that describes the
horrendous conditions of the districts, and the oppressing power of The Capitol. It goes in
depth of how this book mirrors the society of The United States of America, and how our
own government oppresses the people that it swears to protect. It uses examples from the
book and compares them to different social situation in todays society. It is a shocking
glimpse of how such a drastic society in The Hunger Games can actually mirror our own
society that we live in.
"The Hunger Games." - Rotten Tomatoes. N.p., 2012. Web. 20 July 2014.
In this article, movie critics review and summarize the main point throughout The
Hunger Games. They talk about how well the movie portrayed the book, and how the
movie is a surprising portrayal, although far fetched, of how our own society works and
operates. They have many different reviews and they combine all of them together to
come up with one general consensus about the movie, which overall is good. It critiques
each character in the movie and what they did well and not so well, and how their
portrayal mirrored the actual characters in the book.

Donovan 7

In this article, the author talks about how the movie didn't explain some of the key parts
of the book that really needed to be addressed throughout the movie. One of the things
that movie didn't talk about that was one of the main ideas throughout all of the Hunger
Games books was the Mockingjay Pin. It is a symbol all throughout the books of hope
and revolution that isn't really talked about throughout the movie. It is one of the
foundations of Katniss Everdeans struggle throughout the games, and then during the
upcoming revolution. It is one of the things that keeps her going through it all, for her
mother and sister Prim, for Peeta, and for Gale.
